Hi, I'm Corey. I am a writer/actor/comedian based in Los Angeles. I have dealt with mental health issues since the fifth grade. Now I want to laugh with them. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, and Depression. I'm not a doctor, but that’s exactly why my brother said I should talk about it.
This is a literal self help channel. For me, and hopefully for you. 🙌

Doing the scary thing heals our fear of death. It helps us embrace death as a part of life. So great hearing your perspective on The Prophet. I LOVE Kahil Gibran, and the depth of his work 🖤

Three rules of life Paradox, humor and change 1. Paradox- life doesn't make sense. Don't waste your time trying to figure it out. 2 Humor- Keep a sense of humor, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure 3. Change. Know that nothing stays the same.

Awesome to keep in mind! The power of humor reminds me of this: "The great writers keep writing about the cold dark place within, the water under a frozen lake or the secluded, camouflaged hole. The light they shine on this hole, this pit, helps us cut away or step around the brush and brambles; then we can dance around the rim of the abyss, holler into it, measure it, throw rocks in it, and still not fall in. It can no longer swallow us up. And we can get on with things." - Anne Lamott

At 5 minutes you speak of changing your perception/purpose of your issues and make them your teacher. I can tell you that doing this is the thing that that has impacted my healing from depression more than anything. I chose the term "training". Life IS your training, pain IS your teacher. Nothing "good" or of value comes without pain. It is the process. So accept the pain. Give it (or realize rather) meaning and purpose.

It seems to me that humans are very good at abstraction and sublimation. For example, we euphemistically call rutting "making love" and we relabel behavioralism as "spirituality". My take away from your video is to reduce the abstraction labels that we apply to ourselves. For example, the word "fear" has an ethereal quality to it; it is intangible, almost mystical, something that exists in this magical "mental" realm that us humans occupy. Yet, fear has a very physical and chemical basis in our brain. It is a neuronal response. OCD, depression, all of it - physics and chemistry at the end of the day. Bliss? Happiness? Samesies. Yet we turn to abstraction to solve our mental problems. Religion, spirituality, therapy, etc. These modalities may very well help us to rewire our brain, but they are abstractions nonetheless in that they don't acknowledge the foundational reality of what it is they are addressing: bad wiring in the brain. Now, that is not to say that any of this is not magic. Indeed, all of it is magic, and the moment we label a thing we demote it to ordinariness, but existence itself is magical and mysterious, and so is a neuron, so is a pimple, so is dirt. But understanding how that magic works, how these beliefs enable you to rewire your brain, to reroute the stimulus and response circuitry of your brain, can be an important factor in "solving" these physical discomforts (though I would argue these are problems only when we label them as problems). Personally, I would see OCD and depression as concrete and tangible as a stubbed toe, but I would not look to spirituality to help me with my toe pain. It's the wrong tool for that job. Clearly, if there is a god, if all of this was created, down to the last detail, then depression is built into the equation, OCD is built in, pimples are built in. In the infinite realm of possibility this set of possibilities was chosen. To critique creation is to critique the creator. To pray for an end to your suffering is to renounce the suffering that was added to the design. You might as well tell Da Vinci that you don't like Mona Lisa's dress. And besides, it's not like god isn't aware of your suffering. I hope we are not playing a game of uncle with god where it is just waiting for us to beg for its help. I would take any alternative to that. So, perhaps suffering is the fire that purges you of all the human silliness and reminds you that being well adapted to a sick society is not a good measure of your mental health. Maybe all suffering is just the friction we feel when we try so hard to be something we were never meant to be...

Great to read, Thomas. Thank you. 💛 Reminds me of Alan Watts saying that "words are [just] coins for real things." Also another favorite, Ram Dass, in this life, “You need to remember your Buddha Nature and your social security number." ...this sort of paradoxical holding of the primal and the infinite: A will to survive and a surrender to It. Also reminds me of Richard Rohr saying, "I am not here to say either-or. I am here to say both-and."

The true paradox is that we must use our mind to free ourselves from our mind... To sum up the lessons from all these "gurus": 1. We do not really know anything about reality. 2. Our mind is untrustworthy, yet we trust it explicitly. 3. If we fix #2 we *might* gain insight into #1. These gurus also say enlightenment is not a process of learning, but a process of unlearning. Yet, we are learning this from the gurus... Riddle me this. But no more quotes, Corey. No more regurgitation of old, stale ideas. Look me in the eye. Be here with me. Let the mystery of existence flow through you in the now THE RIGHT HERE AND THE RIGHT NOW. Life is strange, they say. Stranger than what?
