I was a Sony shooter for like 15 years. In the last year and a half or so I have fully switched over to fuji. I have never heard a better description of fuji than this. Fuji makes me want to take pictures. Sony was what I used when I had to take pictures. Such a huge difference.

+1 from another car guy and photographer. I never expected to get so hooked on Fuji gear, started with the original X100 and yet somehow they have more “sex appeal” than my work cameras. Not perfect, nothing is, but definitely more wallet friendly and “fun size” for travel with the fam. I can’t imagine giving up a manual transmission and V8 roar any more than I can imagine shooting with an automated brick of menus instead of Fuji’s old school dials. Each has their place. 😎

Interesting perspective. Very well illustrated. I use my Fujifilms for work. Have used them for the likes of the Chanel N°1 product line, for VOGUE, ELLE, etc... As all of the new cameras are very capable, Fujifilm does the job as well as any of the competitors. Out of my last 10 gigs, 6 were with XT's and 4 with GFX systems. The GFX 100S is phase detect autofocus.

Manny, I enjoy your videos. I was a Canon shooter for years a last fall completely switched to Fuji. I shoot with the X-T2. In my opinion the best of the XT series. I switched because I wanted to be more hands on with my photography. I feel that technology in cameras has taken the creativity out of photography. As far as autofocus, since moving to Fuji, I now shoot 98% of the time in manual focus. Even when I am doing wildlife. I still back button focus in manual focus, but I can dial in exactly on where I want to be. I know this sounds archaic, but when I started photography in the 80’s, I was shooting basketball games with a Nikon FG20, 105mm f2.8 and black and white film. There was no auto anything. Everyone has there style of shooting and Fuji allows me to shot my style easier than any system out there. Thanks again for the video!

I love shooting my fuji stuff when not shooting pro with my R6. I just traded up from an xt20 to an x-s10. I love the S10 for the grip. I didn't mess with dials much. I mostly shoot street or casual and use Auto ISO with minimum SS set. I love the simulations and recipes. I mostly use the jpegs and do minimal tweaks. It's so much fun and relaxing to go this route.

Thanks for this upload. I get what you are saying completely. I just bought the X-T5 with the 33 1.4 for my fun camera. Reminds me of the fun I had with my Canon A1 from many years ago with the convenience of being digital. I use an R5 for my work but the fuji is fun (and light)! Images are great. What more does anyone want? One thing, the traditional camera for me is the A1 and so the feel of the X-T5 is more traditional but I get when you say the H2 is more traditional for you. I am an old boy now 😂

Been away for a while but I caught this vid because it dealt with Fujifilm. I have an XT-2 and I love it. It's a camera's camera. I have the X100V and an old stick shift Subaru Forester XT, and can confirm that you nailed it with the car analogy. Some things just give you a better experience, even if they're more uncomfortable, slower, and more manual. I also have a Canon 6D, and I'm struggling to decide if I should fully switch over to Fujifilm with a more "interesting" X-T5 or stick with Canon and get the more advanced but kind of boring/automatic R6... 🤔

As an S2000 owner and photographer I have often made the very same comparison. For when it has to be gotten with the minimum amount of work the A1 is unbeatable. But for pure tactile interaction I love the X-Tx bodies. The A1 is like a Nissan GTR in comparison but 9000rpm, no traction control, pure 6MT RWD is more engaging. Well put, Manny!

x100 series is in a league of it's own in my opinion. for majority of people this is the camera i recommend. 35mm works for almost any situation. the camera is so small and compact. you can make the file sizes as big or as small as you need to for quick/methodical workflows. simply put it's just a great starter and all-rounder. and the most important piece, which you touched on, IT'S FUN! Few years ago I quit Canon for Fuji, and few months ago I quit Fuji for olders Canon... but I keep Fuji XH1 and 90 mm because, there is little things in it what I still love. Ergonomic, big EVF, sometimes color simulation. Now when I saw your images I and your explanations, I understand what I like on Fuji and what I prefer with FF systems. You're totally right. Hi Manny. Really great episode. One that answers some questions jet raises others. I shoot with a Sony A7R IV and now have lately returned to Fuji first with an X-E4 and now with the X-T5. As an enthusiast I am blessed with the ability to afford my set up. Therein lies an issue. As a highly successful professional you are able to (I guess) write off the cost of equipment against income and gain tax reliefs. I'm in the UK and assume it is the same elsewhere. For those of us who are enthusiasts or pros further down the food chain choice of kit and bang for buck is very important. There are other factors as well. As an older person, damn I hate typing that, I need to reduce the load I carry for a day out hiking in wild places. I also have to carry essential supplies and safety equipment as well. From my perspective the Sony is a great camera and allows me to crop hard for wildlife and other shots as well as providing terrific detail for Macro. I'd be really interested to see what happened if you used the X-H2 for example for client work? Would they notice the difference? Or is the difference in your head. Bit of a challenge there I guess. Go well. K

I've had EOS7D for about 10 years. Last year, after I started getting annoyed from removing bad pixels from 7D photos I started looking for a new camera. I went with Fuji XT4 and I'm really loving its dials and color science. One thing that annoys me is that while doing timelapses the camera freezes which makes it unreliable for this kind of job. Damn, man! You nailed the Fujifilm experience for me. I am a network Televisions Director and video editor. Been shooting on film since I was in junior high school with a Pentax Spotmatic camera. Went digital and then wanted an upgrade and found the fuji X-T3 and the manual dials (Heavenly!). Full control over the shooting experience. Your analogy of taking the fun car out for a spin is spot on. And, your comparison of the full-frame vs. APS-C argument was also spot on. Can you light? Can you compose and achieve what you want through lighting and post-processing? Then good for you. Work with your equipment and become a skilled craftsman and you can crank out awesome stuff! Finally, yes, you are correct, there are some ergonomic trade-offs with the Fuji system. But, there are grips that you purchase aftermarket that will give you more of the ergonomic feel you want and need at a very affordable price. I love what Fuji is cranking out year after year. They "get" the photographer. And, now, if the money is there I have my eyes on that GFX camera....

manny if you check your settings make sure AF+MF is turned off. if you have that setting enabled it messes with the shutter priority. so if you have the shutter priority set to focus, but AF+MF is enabled it overrides the shutter priority and just fires, regardless of focus. i noticed an immediate difference when i made that change on my xt4 and my xt2, so its worth checking out.

What about continuous vs single shot? I have AF issues and mostly use continuous but I also have the MF and AF on… yikes! I’m going to turn this off and see.

small note : the GFX 100 and 100S use phase detection autofocus (and are quite okay when it comes to autofocus, a little slower than the X-T4 but not by much) The GFX 50SII and older cameras use contrast detection AF only, and they are indeed quite slow in comparison, however I doubt that we'll ever see another camera made with that very old 51MP sensor

I was literally telling my friends the same thing last week (they're all into cars and photography as well). My daily is a Highlander hybrid to get the kids around, its smooth, drives nice and does everything I want it to, just like my Sony A7RIV and A9 + 24GM, 50ZA, T35-150 f2/2.8. But for pleasure I drive my '92 NSX and '01 S2000 which I liken as my D810 + 90s primes (35f2D, 50/1.8, 85/1.4D). When you get a great shot you know it's all you. Then there is the optical imperfections which I see and value as character.

I like your video a lot, I’m retired have been using Canon since the Film days. After my retirement I switched to Olympus, got all the Pro fixed f1-2 lenses and the f2.8 Pro Zooms. I recently had a stroke which left my arms and legs weaker. The Olympus was too heavy so I switched to fujifilm’s XT-5 and the f2 primes. I found them lighter and more fun to use with the film simulation

Haha, your comparison is what I always think about cars and cameras. Long family journeys or commutes, bring on the auto, adaptive cruise control, satnav, auto this, auto that, you name it. Time spent for fun, jump in my manual, no nav, no auto features, but just a big smile on my face. I sold all my heavy canon gear and went fuji way, couple of really small primes and the standard zoom lens, idk, there's not a single day that passes without taking pictures. Even after really long working hours, my joy is to snap the 24323th shot of my fruit bowl this month

I love my XT-4, it’s just got the right amount of character, it’s different, in a great way. As something who likes to not hop on bandwagons, I’m glad I chose this camera, people love the photos that come out of it, it’s engaging, I’m not a professional so I don’t need the best, I just wanted something that took amazing photos, and trust me this camera does that and more!! Get the 18-55 f2.8 and you have amazing autofocus and video capabilities.

I'm invested heavily in the Sony system but have been thinking about making the switch for a while. I jumped in with the intention of making the full transition over the course of the year. I have an X-T4 and an X-S10 and I set all of my Sony gear aside for a few months and shot exclusively with the Fuji stuff. I haven't yet found a use case where I notice a difference. For all of the grief Sony takes about it, the Fuji menu system is just as convoluted and unwieldy. I think it's just the cost of doing business to have as customizable and highly featured a camera as you get in both. Sure, the Fuji jpegs are slightly better straight OOC, but for my own important work I like Sony's RAW files better... which I understand is probably just a matter of having five or six years more work in processing the Sony files. I think the good news is that we've advanced to a point where Sony, Fuji, Nikon, and Canon are all making such high quality equipment that the differences are down to personal preference. The GFX system is another topic entirely. If we ever see a stable of 3rd party lenses available, I'd have a hard time not going all-in on that system.

I'd love to try these for a while. For everyday use I stick to the Sony A6000. Its not the best camera, but its small and super light, perfect for carrying it during mountain tours. For shoots however, the fullframe cameras are better tools.Still, I'm always thinking "Which camera should I bring?". More options just makes it harder to decide :D

This Video resonates really well with my experience with Fuji. For context: I'm a broke student. My first camera was a literllay broken Sony A58. I wasn´t able to fix it, so I started looking for a replacement. Found a good offer on a broken Fuji X-T10, fixed it and went with it ever since. It took the Fuji-Camera for me to really learn about photography. It felt kinda sterile on the sony. On the Fuji I love experimenting with the settings, as they're all on the tip of my finger. My only complaints about the Fuji so far are it´s autofocus (My eyes are pretty bad, so I rely heavily on AF) and the small selection of cheap telezoom lenses. I don´t want to judge modern Fuji´s AF on my experinece, because the X-T10 is from 2015. But from what I hear Fuji ist still behind Sony and Canon. I also started to focus on wildlife photography and love playing with low light settings - both of these topics basically "need" the bigger sensors and better AF from Fujis competiton. But if I had the money I would still go with Fuji. There's just too much love for the operating concept of their cameras. PS.: I´ve had the same problem with ergonomics, as my hands are pretty big. I´ve ordered a 15$ grip from China and now it´s perfect!

You nailed it with me with the car comparison. I don't think I can leave sony behind for work. But I *never* shoot it outside of work. I've switch to all cell phone shots for personal/memories. I want to get back into daily carrying a camera but the a7c isn't it (I shoot an a7riv and have an a6300 as well). I've had fuji's in the past and I think I'm going back to a split setup, one for work (Sony) and one for fun (fuji). Thanks for the thoughts.

I agree! There’s a personal connection that Fuji gives you to photography, you might not like this, because I feel your style is fast and definitely gets used out of some good AF like Sony cameras, if you get a chance try the GFX camera with a Mamiya 645 lens like the 150mm or the 80mm all manual focus since they are older lenses. I tell you what I felt in love with photography again and the connection that combo gave me. I’ve slowed down so much more but man it’s enjoyable to shoot with a manual focus lens.
