Well I was curious to see how my old diesel truck would like gasoline, as well as nitrous! Here are the results

You can actually run these on gas with a certain mix of motor oil in the gas. Old Mercedes engines had it in the manual that you could mix gas and oil and get by if you absolutely couldn’t find diesel

Modern diesels have antiknock sensors, so most of the damage from this will be around the fuel injection mechanism: pump, injectors, these get damaged pretty quick without the lubrication diesel provides. Gas is a very powerful solvent so you injectors will start leaking pretty quick from metal-on-metal wear.

@peek5548 exactly why it will eventually destroy a diesel engine. Gasoline is highly flamable and the heat from the compression causes violent explosions and shock to the pistons, rings and connecting rods !
@Randall-mt7jk
@Randall-mt7jk 5 ай бұрын
That is a mechanical diesel no knock sensor. A knock sensor can not control the violent explosions of gasoline in a diesel engine! The engine will be severely damaged and eventually destroyed! Do not do this unless you want too buy a new engine! Diesel has a very high ignition point ,gasoline has a low ignition point and violently explodes on contact with the highly compressed air and high temperatures in a diesel engine causing damage to piston ,rings and rods!

I recommend automatic transmission fluid to restore the viscosity of the fuel, so the pump can develop enough pressure to overcome the pop pressure of the injector nozzles. If there's room, adding some diesel fuel will help lower the ignition temperature of the gasoline enough, to auto ignite by the compression of the engine. I recommend running out that fuel, as low as you dare, then, fill up with diesel fuel. That will hopefully protect the injection pump, and the engine will run perfectly normal. You will find, that the engine will run exceptionally clean, have a lot of power, but the fuel consumption will be higher, because the BTU content of gasoline is lower than diesel fuel.
@johnpowers1275
@johnpowers1275 2 жыл бұрын
@@vincentrobinette1507 could be wrong, trying to maybe learn. How could diesel lower the ignition temp? Isnt diesel ignited by high heat? (Via high compression, why no ignition needed)
@vincentrobinette1507
@vincentrobinette1507 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnpowers1275 Diesel has Cetane. It has an autoignition temperature of~360°F. Gasoline has Octane, which has a much higher autoignition temperature, closer to~490°F, or even higher. Premium gasoline can be above 650°F. The compression in a diesel engine may not be high enough, to touch off gasoline, which is formulated to resist pre-ignition due to compression, or hot spots in the combustion chamber. A small amount of diesel, just to touch off the gasoline should allow it to run, and allow combustion using glow plugs in a cold engine. The transmission fluid is only to increase viscosity, to prevent blow-back in the plungers in the injection pump, and, to lubricate the pump to avoid damage.

How about doing an ammonia conversion on a gas or diesel truck? Reading about it , it's like a propane conversion. Ammonia is used in jet and rocket fuel. And land speed record was achieved in a straight ammonia rocket car. Ammonia is cheap and more stable , safer as a green fuel than hydrogen, and viable unlike electric cars.
@ericlotze7724
@ericlotze7724 11 ай бұрын
Ammonia is neat, although as any farmer who applied Anhydrous (or just anyone with a bottle of Aqueous in their Laundry Room) knows, that shit can mess you up! If done safely it’s okay though. Look into Dimethyl Ether (DME) though! It *physically cannot make soot*, and has a higher Cetane value than diesel! Volvo and some others made some big rigs that ran off of it. It had some issues with Seals if i remember correctly but if they can make rotary and methanol race cars work, i bet with enough dev work one could get it working reliably. Stores like propane too, unlike CNG.

I accidently filled my diesel truck with gas one time and drove it 20 miles before it started sputtering. I realized what I did because my other truck I drive daily is gas so I thot wth I will just drive it on home 20 more miles. It sputtered occasionally and I drained the tank and refilled with diesel and it has ran fine ever since. I was told which I am not sure I believe that it actually cleans the motor up. It was mixed because the tank was about 1/4 full btw.

A direct injection compression ignition engine can theoretically burn anything combustible as long as its warmed up enough or has enough compression. Btu per gallon difference will determine max power without turning the screw. But lack of lubrication will quickly destroy the fuel pump. 2 stroke oil and low octane gas should be perfectly fine in a mechanical diesel. A computer controlled may have issues do to amount of fuel injected vs expected engine output.

@poellot

@@RJ1999x ok. Well even most indirect injection would be very similar as far as burning about anything combustible. But precup design would probably make less efficient burn for other fuel types due to burn speed.

Here's a little hack for you, in a 2015 International semi if you're capped at 65 mph, wait til you're going 65, have your foot all the way down on the gas pedal, completely let off, and slam it all the way back down again repeatedly (at least 5-7 times) your mph gauge should drop to 0 and slowly climb back up. During this time you can get up to 70-75 mph. As soon as it catches back up it'll slow you back down to 65. It's a great trick if you need to get past someone quicker, or a car is just chilling beside you.

Starting on gasoline was always going to be tough since it has a poor cetane rating. Gasoline is refined for a high octane rating, or resistance to destination, which is the opposite of what you want in a diesel. I ran the 4bt Cummins in my truck on 50/50 gas/oil once to get me 5 miles down the road in a pinch. It ran great with plenty of lube for the injection system. Motor oil has a good cetane rating, so starting wasn't an issue either. If he would have added like 10-15% oil, it probably would have started on the mostly gas mix.

Only time ive seen a diesel react to gas was in logging woods. Crew was trying to start a loader. Didnt have starting fluid so they was gas soaking a rag and putting it over the breather. The gas soaked the filter and when that thing did crank it ran away had to shove a t shirt into the breather pipe to choke it down bc it woukdnt shut off and was several rpm over red line. Needless to say boss man had a engine to rebuild bc it was knocking like hell.

@MrTruckerf 2 жыл бұрын
If you had to rebuild it you must have been a hair slow smothering the thing. I had a V-8 Detroit in a '73 Freightliner and it had a shut-off right beside the seat you could pull if it started to run away. Never had it happen, but it did start and run backwards twice. That's why you had to have caps on the exhaust pipes.

@@jamessimmons4770 I think you are correct, I heard in 1984 that the 6.9 was a Ford engine. I drove a Ford with the 6.9 and other than being noisy, wasn't impressed. The 7.3 is diffantly an International engine. I could be wrong and both were International. One thing I don't like about the Ford power stroke is it uses high oil pressure to operate the fuel injectors. If you don't keep the oil changed it can stop the engine, seen that a few times
