Sony just announced the PS5 pro, with release date, prices around the world, and pre-orders. And it's a confusing mess.

I fumbled my words and said 700 Euro instead of 800 (this includes sales tax). I apologize, but at least the giant screenshot corrects me while I say it lol This also means that with the drive and stand it’s over 900 euros when the PS5 with a drive can be bought for 400 to 450 regularly on sale. I wanted one, but not for this ridiculous price 😂 I just stick with my PS5 and Series X. And wait for the PS6.

To be fair, at that time the PS5 was brand new technology, a new generation of gaming with huge upgrades from previous generation. And during Covid people was desperate to play games. Now the PS5 Professional is just a marginal upgrade based on 4 year old technology and people can still play same games on PS5 Amateur version. So the situation is not entirely comparable. Only little part of those same people would even consider buying.

I wouldn't even be surprised if scalpers buy them out and people pay 1k+ again, especially after Sony starts showing their new games to build hype. Trailers of Wolverine, GTA6, Ghost of Tsushima 2, etc. best played on PS5 Pro will have the rich kids/parents forking out their cash. Then they will start bundling those new games with the Pro and more people will take the bait. Worst case scenario people just buy a regular PS5 and Sony's still happy, cause Xbox doesn't sell as well and Switch (or 2) can't play modern games. Gamers just need to stop giving Sony any kind of money, but they can't help themselves

I've always had both, but I feel that with this generation I could go full PC, since the latest Sony exclusives are not very good (except for Stellar Blade and Astro Bot). However, what keeps me on console now is physical games. Even if my PC is more powerful than the PS5 I end up buying all new big AAA games on the PS5. Ironic isn't it?

I built my first PC in 2019 and haven't went back after being a lifelong console gamer. I wasn't planning to, but free online, multi-generational backwards compatibility, choosing when/what to upgrade, emulators for past console generations, third-party devs supporting PC more than they ever did in the past, first-party games making their way to PC, mods - it's a lot more value and functionality. I may buy whatever Nintendo releases next, though.

Killer apps are actually more important, just severely overlooked. Astrobot has been killing it, imagine the novelty of a mascot platformer for the playstation, like they werent built on games like jack n daxter, crash bandicoot, ratchet n clank. Right now that market is starved for something new. Gamepass is xbox’s killer app, and they’re going for quantity over quality anyways now. Nintendo has their solid switch exclusives. Sony’s exclusives were new on the ps4, and werent even close to the lineup that made me want a ps3. I cant see a reason in hardware or software to be excited for the ps5-2!

For instance, for AMD there's the 7600 which can be bought for 250-300 dollars, the RX 6750 XT for 300, RX 6800 for 30 the 7700 XT for 400, and the 7800 XT for 500 or so. For Nvidia, an RTX 4060 is can be bought for 300, the RTX 3070 for 350, RTX 4070 for about 500-600, and same for the RTX 3080. Basically there are plenty of options that are sub 1k for a GPU, quite a few of which are below 500 and these are all good GPUs. There's really only one GPU that would cost 2k and that's the RTX 4090, which is nowhere near necessary to get a great gaming experience.

There's a concept in marketing, which I forget the name of, where you make 3 products. You have the basic low tier option. Your pricey high tier option. And a middle option. But you price the mid tier option in such a way that it makes the upper tier option more attractive. And I feel like that's what they've done here. When there is a thousand or more gulf between the ps5 and a good having pc, you're a bit cautious. But when there's a smaller gulf you start looking into pc and realizing "oh. I can do x, y, and z to buy it cheaper and then upgrade some of the parts with an ssd and more ram later." They've created a product whose existence makes pc more attractive by pointing to the flaws in their own system. I can't say how much it will truly hurt them because nothing seems to mean anything anymore except for when it does. But it's at least got people thinking in a way Sony wasn't intending.

im a ps fanboy, but the thing thats killer form me on this is no disc drive, what the hell. Obviously the price is an issue, and the fact that theres not many games yet, but what do i do with my game library that is pretty much exclusively on physical media. I was the exact person who would have gone out and bought this thing. No games really hurts it, this whole AAA gaming landscape needs to get wiped off. You dont need to sink millions in these massive games, just give studios a bit of money to make some cool games, if they fail so be it, move on. Corporate greed has truly ruined everything.

I'm forever GLAD I switched to PC gaming, my PS5 is literally catching dust in a corner until I end up getting Astro Bot in a sale down the road or if it eventually comes to PC. The only console I really touch is my Series X, only because I can use my third party controllers that have hall effect joysticks(my DualSense got drift lol) and play Apex Legends since the PC version is full of cheaters.

I'm not sure Sony's not taking a loss at 700 usd. All new hardware from AMD and NVidia is just getting more expensive in the rat race to pull off raytraced 4k with the best upscale tech. My PC can chew up a PS5 but it took awhile to get there with the 2020 price spike (my 1080ti was a real trooper though).

The reason why Nintendo is still relevant is because they didn't fall for the extremely high graphical fidelity games, they are evolving at a much slower pace, yet they are a huge competitor. The lesson here is everyone needs to slow down, make smaller games, make games that are not the highest in everything, just make normal size games, 1 game takes the entirety of a console generation lifetime to make, 8, 7 or 6 years, no wonder PS5 has no gemes, and their push towards life service, people who play live service they play on pc since they mostly want very high FPS, currently the PS5 feels alot like the PS3. Like a barren wasteland.

It's INSANE that the PlayStation, the very console that stood out and marketed itself as using the technology of CDs and continuing that tradition with the PS3 being a blu ray player. Now doesn't have a disk tray at all. Unrelated, don't consider Nintendo put, the Switch is old but it's largely complicated dodged the dark age of shit games in the industry and has a fantastic library but is also the only unique console, the only mobile gaming device left and is the only one who still maintains the true spirit of a console with couch co-op. Basically, if you are a smart gamer you own a PC and a switch for all the Nintendo stuff you can't get or do on a PC.

How did they think this would work out well? The industry has to admit they have failed at game development. Entire Genres have disappeared. We need Games. We need REASONS to want a new console. They should look back at the PS1-PS2 game libraries and let those games inspire them and get them back to doing what they did during those eras of games. We need 2D, 2.5D, 3D, low poly PS1 style, 2d animation style, cell shaded, sports & Xtreme sports we just need GAMES! It worked then and it will work now. That approach to gaming will always work in gaming, so it's pretty ridiculous how our MODERN gaming industry has lost the plot as much as they have. People mention indie games and we do have indie games BUT 99% are only available on PC and on Steam.. and most indie games are not available on consoles. Two things: 1) Sony needs to recoupe the $100 million spent on Concord. 2) Sony wants to remove the sticker shock from PS6 when it comes out in four years or so by having consumers make peace with the increase now, even if the sales of the PS5 pro are not great.

PlayStation might be selling well now, but their entire business represents the worst of the gaming industry now. Ballooning AAAA budgets for increasingly higher fidelity games that don't push gameplay forward in the slightest, driving the dumb masses to keep salivating for it, while being completely unsustainable and detrimental to the whole industry. Nintendo continues to have a rock-solid gameplay first IP strategy that will continue to work for them, and Xbox is pivoting into something else. The one with the worst outlook is Sony I would argue - an old dinosaur that can't adapt and is sticking with a strategy that is really starting to show its limits.

Comparison with PC is also not entirely correct, because once you buy a PC, you can upgrade only parts you want to without rebuying entire PC. Some games on PC are cheaper too, due to free givewaways on Epic or good price drops on Steam. You don't need to pay monthly to play online either. And if you have a handheld PC, then you can play the same games on handheld without repurchasing them. Therefore I don't like comparing game consoles to PC directly.

If a new PS5 Professional comes out, instead buying an entire new PC, one can just upgrade the RAM and GPU in example. It's not like you have to buy an entire PC and all parts. You can often use previous parts. Also we are talking about 4 years difference, not 8 years. Its been 4 years since original PS5 came out and now the upgraded PS5 Professional is out. How you look at it, you can't compare PC to consoles by just looking at the price. It makes no sense.

Bought a (back then) top shelf Pc when sony started porting their exclusives to steam. Im not bound to one platform anymore. I can buy games without a second thought because i know, when i upgrade, i can replay them and they will scale up to my upgrade. Got an UW as well, its amazing. I can play og daggerfall and brand new space marine 2 or wukong on the same machine. Best decision ever.

I'm gonna disagree and say that consoles need more exclusive titles, because that will actually SELL them, I see Xbox and PlayStation blend together far too much in my mind and I can't say I'd take one over the other very often, unless it's for a game that is on and not the other! Exclusivity drives competition, and competition drives innovation

This is part of the reason why I moved to PC gaming over 10 years ago from being a playstation only gamer. Spend the large amount of cash on a playstation that will only be used for gaming and maybe watching movies and then get the recurring subscription cost to be able to play online games? or get a computer that can play games, movies and so much more and be able to play online games without a subscription? (though now every online game comes with it's own subscription with the FOMO battle passes)

5:13 Actually somebody has already posted a PC build that more or less matches the PS5 Pro and the it came to about 790 dollars. In particular the build included a Ryzen 5 5600, an RX 7700 XT, and 16 GB of ram. The only real downside is it went with 1TB of storage space. Now yes this is more than the PS5 Pro, but said PS5 Pro lacks a disc drive, and if you wanted the stand as well, then the build would have been cheaper and would also give you some leeway for storage space, or any accessories you may need. You can also avoid paying for PS+, which is 80 dollars at the lowest tier for just ONE year's worth. That PC build will play current and future games at good settings, older titles at much better settings (and you can reach much higher framerates too), and it has access to more indie titles, mods for many games, and the entire retro library through emulation, including PS3 emulation (no streaming needed). Meanwhile, that PS5 Pro will continue to get more expensive due to the higher cost of games, PS+ being 80 or more a year, and Sony price gouging you on controllers that get drift within months (On PC, you can use any controller, including ones that don't develop stick drift). And you don't even have to give up exclusives for the most part since most from Sony and Microsoft get put on PC, and the time between release on console to time on PC is getting shorter and shorter, and with being able to emulate pretty much any Nintendo console means PC can play almost any game that is ever made.

Consoles really need to pivot their priorities. Owning physical copies of their games needs to be their priority if they want to survive. Most gaming PCs don’t have disc readers and no one is making physical computer games. That is the one thing console has over PC and they are trying to discourage that. It’s stupid.

I did get the PS4 Pro without much deliberation and the biggest selling point for me with this would be the AI upscaling, but no way am i paying 800 Euros + another 100 or so for the disc drive. The price is bad enough in USD but other regions are completely effed... almost 1000$ converted. No thanks.

I gave up on PS and went back to PC after Dragons Dogma 2 couldnt reach 60 FPS. There is no way I am playing Monster Hunter Wilds on that crap.

As someone who owns ps5 digital I don’t want to buy the pro because I agree with you. I simply do not need it. It’s not that of a big deal to compel me to spend 800 euros for it just to transit from regular to pro. I’ll rather wait for ps6. Plus, I kinda wanna play WoW, so I’ll buy some middle class gaming laptop for that money. :) But also I have to say something in defense for pro. You know that it’s so hard for please everyone. How much costs good graphic card for gamers pc? 1000$? How much for ram? Processor of the latest? You cannot buy a gamers pc for 700$. You just can’t. And yet people are expecting from Sony to make a superb console with ultra realistic rtx quality and to pay it like 400$???

I feel like videogames have changed forever, and I'm not interested in where they are going. I find I'm playing my switch and PS3 fat more and more. I have a PS5 but it mostly collects dust. I play ps4 games more on my ps5.

There are lots of PC gamers who sometimes (or even prefer to) play on the couch. So it's about furniture. GTA 6 will be the biggest game ever, and the PS5 Pro will be the best platform for that at launch.

I know who it’s for but it’s not for me. I have a pc(I want to upgrade) and want a steam deck(perfect for football season and not sitting on the PC all day). For me the ps5 pro is a non factor when it comes to must having a consoles. I can wait a year for exclusives and Xbox have its games come to PC I still want a switch

The problem with going from console gaming to PC gaming is thinking that running a PC game in 1080p 60+ fps High-Very High presets is less than a console when in reality console games run in a Mid to high mix of settings and in an internal resolution of 720 to 900 in "performance" mode to barely hit 60 fps and 900 to 1200 in "Quality" mode to hit 30 fps and that is abusing heavily of upscaling technology to present the image in a psudo 1440 - 2160 resolution, PS5 pro will get close to the performance you can get out of a low-mid range gaming PC but for almost the same cost, you can get more out of a 900 - 1100 pc built, consoles are supposed to be a deal too good to be true, thats why the base PS5 is a great deal, in my opinion they should have drop the price of the base PS5 /w disc drive to 399, PS5 digital to 359 and launch the PS5 pro as a disc based only 559 console.

The console market in its current state is a reflection of Sony's dominance. Microsoft has been very clear in the pivot they are taking to being a content provider and are trying to graciously exit the segment. So while Sony is victorious they're also victims of that success and not really knowing where to compete, how to compete, and who to compete with. They'll find their footing as the market is already there for them but I wouldn't be surpised if Microsoft ultimately wins this war.

Considering the dev cycle length to make business decisions like this, it's gonna be a while before Sony can try to dig themselves out of all the weird, bad, Sony news we've been seeing lately. On the plus side, these weird decisions might force some interesting shifts in the industry, at least in the short term, as companies adjust to... whatever this is.

Actually, your numbers are incorrect. Sony has sold 60m units, Xbox has sold 30m units. It’s 2 to 1, not 5 to 1.

I had pretty much only pc gamed for the occasional MMO and was a console gamer 99.9% of my 38 years gaming. Pro with no disk drive for 700$ was even worse than I expected. Since I won't be shelling out even more to cling to physical, I've got a 4090 rig on it's way next week and am out of the console space on anything past this generation's console exclusives that won't ever hit pc.

Sony doesn't need you to buy it, not with xbox collapsing and multiple disasters and disappointments across the pc gaming landscape. The main alternayive to the ps5 pro at this point is just the ps5.
