Ken Dekleva is a psychiatrist who has spent over twenty-five years carefully analyzing adversary foreign leaders and making leadership assessments for the national security and policy community. Among his most high-profile assignments were the five years he spent at US Embassy in Moscow, providing medical support to US diplomats and their families, and also carefully studying the leadership style of Russia’s President Putin. Based upon this experience, Dekleva sheds light on what we can expect from Putin who is increasingly ostracized and facing Day 320 of his three-day war.
Dekleva has recently published a new mystery novel, The Negotiator’s Cross, about an American priest, pulled into a dangerous world of hostage negotiations in Mexico and Russia, which test his mettle, and most importantly, his faith, in a series of life and death scenarios.

Giving Putin more exit ramps all the time won't work in our favour imo. He's been driving on a road full of exit ramps for the past 10+ months, didn't take a single one of them, got hundreds of thousands of people killed in both sides in the process and it's safe to say the last thing he's looking for is an exit ramp bc he's fighting for his personal and political survival already. It's time to come to terms that he'll likely continue on that road, we/the west only look weak to him by offering him countless offramps and we miss to fully support Ukraine In fear of escalation ... mind you, escalation is on Putin's plans anyways, if we like it or not.

Putin realised in early September he had failed in his invasion of Ukraine. He also realised he MUST come out of this failed invasion winning something ... anything! It is then he made his next foolish decision that regardless of how many Russian lives are lost, he must retain at least the Ukrainian land east of the Dnipro River. For Putin there has never been an 'exit ramp' for him to take that will not cost him his dictatorship and most probably his life!

@@msimon6808 I agree that perhaps PTSD and anger plays a large part in their decision making. With Hitler it was self-hatred as well. He knew or believed that he was 1/4 Jewish and he killed everyone from his past to make sure that fact never came out. I read a great biography by Joachim Fest about Hitler and he was a German journalist during the Nazi years. At first I thought he was an apologist for the German People but I was wrong. It surprised him how many people who knew Hitler in his youth and the years when he lived in homeless shelters before going to jail were found to have been taken by the SS and killed. I wonder with Putin if the fact that he went from the FSB straight into politics and then with very little political background was handed the presidency only because of being hand picked by Boris Yeltsin. The FSB training was not wasted on Putin. That FSB training made him a cold blooded killer. Just ask the people of Chechnya. Also look into the investigation of the "terrorist" bombings that the victorious Chechnyans, they beat the Russian army just like Ukraine, were supposed to have committed which Putin used as an excuse to bomb Chechnya into rubble. Why would a nation that beat Russia and drove them out have a reason to bomb citizens of Russia. The bombings have FSB written all over them. Putin became famous on killing 150K to 200K Chechens.

Completely agree with Anita K. I thought your analysis was coherent until advocating for exit ramps. Putler has been given many exit ramps and could take one right now and say that he killed all the Nazis, pulling a GWB "Mission Accomplished." Putler has no interest in this, so unless he is taken out this war will continue until every man and woman in Russia has been conscripted and either killed or wounded to the point that they cannot pick up a gun.

The psychiatrist has good insight into these “bad actors” who are tyrants of the world, but he does not discuss the details of these people who likely have certain types of personality disorders that will never improve.
@lbb101
@lbb101 Жыл бұрын
Psychologists or psychiatrists will normally carefully avoid to diagnose or speculate on the possibility of a personally disorder from a distance. For one that would be scientifically highly unsound - diagnosis of personality disorders is a complex matter that 99.9% of cases requires in person tests. Rarely do symptoms and behavior show so obviously in public that one could with any validity. Second there is a strong tendency among kitchen-psychologist and layman to attribute evil to a personally disorder - because it offers a simple explanation for unexplainable evil. So we laymen are quick to shout sociopathy, psychopathy, etc. pp. to make sense. To sum up: a legit psychological analysis in this use case will tend to be well weighed and cautious and avoiding concrete diagnosis of a specific disorder.

@@lbb101 I think that the reason people look to a psychological issue is that simply being an evil person is no longer believable and I think that many Americans get that from their fascination with Forensic Psychiatry the type of which is used to track down serial killers that is all over TV. However, if you take Pol Pot as an example. After years of fighting he and his army finally beat the government of Cambodia. He sought to create an agrarian socialist society that he believed would evolve into a communist society. Pol Pot's government renamed Cambodia "Democratic Kampuchea" which is ironic because there was nothing democratic in his form of government. His followers aka his army, most of whom were quite young, believed that the educated people of Cambodia allowed the US to destabilize their country by dropping 230,516 bombs on them because the Viet Cong used their jungles to move arms into South Vietnam. Cambodia was a peaceful country until the US destabilized it and then the US backed a government of their choice. We have been doing that since the rise of communism as I'm sure you know. His army forcibly relocated the urban population to the countryside to work on collective farms. Pursuing complete egalitarianism, money was abolished and all citizens were made to wear the same black clothing. Mass killings of "government opponents" educated people, coupled with malnutrition and poor medical care, killed between 1.5 to 2 million people, which was about a quarter of Cambodia's population. Now that is pure evil but it is based on his beliefs and I don't think you have to have a psychological issue to become Pol Pot, Stalin, or Putin. I chose Pol Pot because he evolved into that creature that no longer had a soul and he trained his young soldiers to be as cold blooded as he was. They all couldn't have a psychological issue because they killed indiscriminately. Perhaps it's just me but I think that evil is seen as Biblical and many people don't realize that you don't have to believe in God to believe in good and evil. That's my take on leaders who do horrific things to their own people. I apologize for the length of my comment. I tend to overdue it sometimes.

It may have been helpful for the psychiatrist to discuss what some call “The Raskolnikov Simplex”. In short, the idea that a moral brain’s ability to distinguish between right and wrong deteriorates after someone commits immoral acts, such as murder (in the case of Raskolnikov, of his landlady). Whether the grisly atrocities and smashed cities of relatives have inflicted the simplex on many Russians, one can only imagine given the most recent rhetoric from the Kremlin.

This is the kind of personality analysis we need to require of political candidates in the West, especially in the US, in addition to our candidates for gun permits! The kinds of citizen- or elector-based reviews we now conduct are insufficient to unearth the hidden emotional immaturities and potential psychotic danger of well-practiced, inauthentic public personas. Americans, and others, are apt to succumb too easily to candidate marketing and outright lying, if packaged attractively enough! Public figures seem to get a “pass” from the rigorous scrutiny that might have avoided a Trump-like person from becoming a political candidate, or elected to office!

Why so many Americans were and are still duped by Trump is a phenomenon in itself. During his run for the presidency in 2016, I think a huge number of people in the USA and around the world already recognised Trump's massive egocentricity, his unscrupulousness and his many other negative personality traits. Trump's voters just chose to ignore what is self-evident to most humans who trust their instincts a bit. A professional diagnosis would just state what is already obvious.

If you did you would know it is almost non-existent, if you did research you would also know the VAST majority of gun crimes are committed NOT by legal gun owners. FYI I worked in law enforcement including working at the FBI, which by the way publishes all of these statistics every year, facts such as that so called assault rifles are used in less than 1% of all gun crimes in an average year. As for politicians you will find psychopaths and narcissists completely dominate politics. I suspect these facts or the Constitution will have zero impact on your opinion though because to people like you facts do not matter, your emotions and authoritarian ideology is all that matters to you.

People as Putin wants to win, no matter what! I have this dream that as we get the value “integrity” everyday coming along , from al sides , and this in combination that he wants to win , he will somewhere find himself a way out and will convince at least his own people about this norm “integrity’ . In debates we should gave clear messages about what WE have as OUR standard, instead of to much reasoning about how war should be from the Russian perspective, I think.

Please Ask Ukrainian Arms in Bakmut: Could you provide the Russian Mobiks a possibilty to wave the white flag on the killing fields? Like leaving white flags on flagpoles on the fields at night, that they can rise later and gather around to march ahead into security behind Ukrainian lines. In this way Ukrainian army can save lives and ammunition.

Are you out of your mind? Surrender means torture, well documented in hundreds of videos and reports. Vice versa, most Ukr POWs have had it better as prisoners than being abandoned without supplies and weapons in their trenches by their commanders.

Sorry mate….you’ve got your armies mixed up. The Ukrainians have shown great humanity to Russian soldiers. Unfortunately the Russians have only shown what inhuman animals they are and historically have always been. I’m hoping for a total destruction of the RF and a chance for them to rebuild the country to live alongside with Europe in peace and harmony. Putin is dead, one way or another.

The shrink is weak on facts. Why is the war in Ukr worse than say the war in Libya or Yemen? Yemen has had 500,000 casualties, most civilians. The Ukr war about 7,000 civilians. It has the lowest civilian:military ratio of any recent war, including all the US/NATO interventions, which are about 1:1 instead of 1:20. How many civilians do you think you could get with 120 missiles, instead of the one or two casualties yielded by hitting transformers, if you were targeting civilians? About 20,000? A shrink with no self-awareness who has no grasp of objective reality. He cites long since debunked atrocities. Many of the hallmark civilian casualties were the work of Ukrainian Air Defence.
