Being extremely messy as an adult is a sign of massive childhood trauma. It's that their life was so scattered and disorganized as a child, they are looking to relive it.

This is in it's own unique way both very sweet & sad. We are always our childhood throughout our adulthood. Childhood needs are so crucial. Also people living in cluttered surroundings has been proven they're also very smart, despite childhood trauma. Hoarding or ocd is also a way of holding on to a scattered past.

And as another KZbinr brought out, clutter can be the result of trauma from a narcissistic relationship, which can impact your executive function skills- and that’s totally me. It’s quite overwhelming, because my place was so clean before.

My needs were not met in childhood and I find myself trying to over correct and buy too many clothes for my kids.

Why CLUTTERING is bad: 1. IT makes a VERY UGLY look in your house 2. Clutter makes it HARD to FIND your things. 3. It MADE walking around the house VERY HARD 4. Cleaniness is almost IMPOSSIBLE to do with SO MUCH stuff in your home. Thank you for the video!

Agree messy people are traumatized unhealed people and worse the clutter creates oxidative stress so that adds more to their stressful life trying to function after their traumas so their needs to be a full cleansing because after therapy when they come back to their mess that could bring flashbacks or regrets just too much momentous to live in the past so it’s not good to have a cluttered place or as I see it also as their coping mechanisms that clearly is destructive just as emotional eating retail therapy for that feel good Chemical balance of dopamine to feel happy, but later make them feel crappy after stuffing self with unnecessary stuff and food, so it’s very important to have to find a emergency decluttering protocol to really progress in therapy

How do you know that the problem isn't poverty and lack of autonomy NOW? Sure, their childhood may have been a particular Hell, but that doesn't mean the adult's situation isn't Hell, also.

Growing up around narcissists with hoarding tendencies and scattering things everywhere like toddlers and fratboys (I like things easy access/visual. I'm talking wth randomness.) I've gone in the opposite direction. My nervous system can't handle all of that on top of modern life.

Your statement is an over-simplification. You're overlooking the effects of mental health issues like ADHD, OCD, anxiety, and depression. Anxiety and depression may or may not be a result of childhood trauma. ADHD certainly is not.

You have too much stuff and are too busy and overscheduled to keep all the stuff you have organized and tidy.. It's not your parents fault or childhood trauma.

I partially agree with this as a Psych Nurse Practitioner but the last bit comes across as really crass, judgmental and condescending. We all have childhood trauma to one degree or another, no one gets out of this life unscathed. However, just because we acknowledge our trauma (childhood or otherwise and the trauma we have unintentionally and intentionally inflicted upon others and ourselves) doesn’t mean we are self victimizing our selves. Pain is often our greatest teacher, there would be no this ing to heal or evolve from without it. It’s a gift, a tool. But it can absolutely 100% as with most other dualistic things in life…cause us and those we cherish to suffer great consequences. Childhood trauma does not even imply that we’ve necessarily had “bad parents” or a bad upbringing, it could be childhood bullying, s*xual, emotional, physical or psychological abuse from someone we thought we could trust, poverty, illness (of our parents or ourselves or even grandparents pr other loved ones) in childhood, inability to make friends, learning / education difficulties etc. For me personally I feel if we were taught how to adequately deal with our emotions then we could begin to heal ourselves immediately and be more prepared for all the woes of adulthood. It’s really self limiting to take on that “pull yourself up by the bootstraps”mentality because a lot of the people who do come from structured backgrounds and had stability and a support system. It’s perfectly fine for both things to be true but to not acknowledge this as a lived experience for so many people is bit moralistic.
