That’s because you know your guests and know how to read your guests and that’s part of being a server. Where I work it’s an “experience”

I just work on perfecting the basics. Knowing the menu well, greeting them immediately and getting them a drink first thing, and MOST IMPORTANTLY-- getting their order out exactly as they asked. Getting their food wrong or not out on time will ruin their experience more than anything else. Some other tips would be never let their drink go empty, making good food suggestions, and taking their order with NO notepad impresses them(but it’s a bit more advanced).

I started working as a server with absolutely no experience last week and our kitchen sucks the wait times are so long they play too much and I feel like I can’t say anything because I’m new but when people order an appetizer it takes way too long sometimes it comes out with the entree I barely have experience eating in restaurants too but it’s super frustrating for me so I can only imagine how the guests feel. My managers know I have no experience too and they scheduled me as the only server and it was a mess I ended up with 150 dollars worth of comps it was only my 3rd day on the job I felt terrible. I’m learning the menu but I have never heard of the place before I got the job so it takes time and I’m not sure what the expectations are. I like it tho and it’s fun but man is it overwhelming at times

@@smoothduck7151 just watch a lot of videos like this. You have to really master the menu, sample the food if u can. Every restaurant is different, you have to examine all the weak spots that slow your process down and find the best solution. If you have slow cooks, get that order in asap so they can finish it faster. If you’re the only waiter, treat it as if you’re serving one big party instead of individual guests. You have to form a good relationship with back of house also. And by any and all means get peoples order correct, make sure food is hot and appealing, no exceptions! You’ll be fine 💪

Agree with everything but the notepad. Idc if you have a memory loke a steel trap, write down that order. Every order. You never know what is going to happen. Worked in many service jobs and even served at nursing homes and retirement villages.

Notepad…I disagree. Write it down!! Specially on a busy night. There’s been times, on busy nights, what I wrote down saved me from making an error. by the time the food was out i would forget the details and had to refer to my notes. Its in the details that makes a difference. Specially with picky eaters or high maintenance Prima Donnas.

The restaurant I'm at supplies tablets thank goodness, it helps reduce errors drastically and saves soo much time since we get to charge them at the table.

But if you can control it, you absolutely should. One time there was a car accident right out front, and I went and made sure everyone was okay, and then brought TOGO waters for everyone and it really brought down the temperature and no one felt left out or at fault in the moment.
