Why earth would you buy anything and then deliberately treat it badly? Do you want to have to replace it now, or later? Furthermore, slaves were still viewed as humans, could buy their own freedom or earn promotions, and could report their masters for abuse. Many slaves sold themselves into slavery to pay off a debt or make a living when there was nothing left available for them. The stuff shown on TV were the horror stories of a few messed up individuals, the ones that stick with you no matter how much time passes. They were the extreme cases. That’s why they became the face of fighting against slavery. (I am not sharing any of this to condone slavery)
