I am 65 years old and have been shooting, off and on, casually since I was a young teenager. I learned more about archery by watching this 2 hour video than the sum of all I have learned over the last 50+ years. Thank you for putting this video out there for folks like me who enjoy shooting a bow but haven't done the in-depth research to enjoy it that much more.

Same story but I am 50 within two days of shooting the fixed crawl I am now shooting a 1 inch group at 20 yards. Hands-down the best video I have ever watched. Oh and for the first time in 35 years I will be putting my compound in the closet next deer season.

@multiculturehead yep and having to search the internet for the info being from one old no longer updated site of older persons info to the new people using recurve/flat Bows due to how they are on the beginners side for a good hunting bow, cheaper then the lowest good compound bow, a Genesis bow or specific Barnet bow-fishing bow without the bow-fishing parts on it.

I'm in the UK, been an archer for 18 yrs, learned more about this subject/passion of ours watching this vid, than I have going to archery clubs here in all that time. I am now a traditional shooter and independent of clubs in England (they only care about Olympic style target archery, I couldn't even shoot an English longbow at my last club). This is like a breath of fresh air, I will watch this vid until I can recite every word! So well explained in plain language and with practical demo's - I love it, I feel as if the scales have been taken from my eyes. Thank You, Thank You so much. God bless America!

I'm glad I brought up your KZbin Archery Movie, It has shown a distinct difference to the competitive side my wife and I were trained at our local club (this stopped completely when my wife condition worsened 15yrs ago) We went the usual route 2nd hand Alum riser Recurve Bow, and then found such freedom with our mainly Osage mix 40,45,50# 73" Longbows, with occasional Agincourt distance clout for fun, so we would have enjoyed what might be called in this country "Field Archery". I like your soft N. American voice putting over such valuable aiming pointers along with stance presentation, thank you and your friends for this worthy display of Archery without dogma.

This is just phenomenal. I started shooting a traditional bow when I was just a kid, and now I find that I am an old man of 50. A while back, I embraced the fact that I just don't make the world's greatest instinctive shooter. When I found out about string walking, I was eager to try it out. I clearly needed some way to aim rather than just pointing and shooting. What got to me about string walking was the fact that I could never seem to get an arrow to fly beautifully, the way a correctly spined arrow should. Walking up and down the string, changed the weight pushing behind the arrow, and therefore the arrow spine. Being a real stickler for perfectly spined shafts, I was about to give up and stick with instinctive shooting. Then one day, about 12 years ago, I began to realize that if I just drew from the same spot on the string BELOW the nocking point, I could exert better control over the trajectory of my arrow; far more so than when I was shooting instinctively. I started calling this "modified string walking", and even began to write a book about it. Needless to say, I abandoned the book a long time ago, but I've continued shooting that way ever since, and I am elated to find somebody else using the same method. Great job, brother. Keep up the good work.

I am blown away by the Fixed Crawl. I have been shooting/hunting traditional since I was 14 years old in 1999. I always have shot instinctively. Back then, I would shoot 4-6 hours a day, all summer long, and could drop three arrows into a red solo cup at 30 yards no problem. Then came adulthood….At 23 I started traveling for work and my accuracy took a dive as I wasn’t able to shoot no where near as much as I had in previous years. I was shooting ‘just good enough’ and was able to take a handful of deer over the years. Recently, the last 3-4 years though, with a demanding job, family obligations (wife/Kid) and other numerous hobbies, I found myself unconfident of my shooting abilities. I have even been considering going with a compound but the allure of trad archery has kept me from it. I tried gap shooting but found it inconsistent and would inevitably switch back to instinctive before season opened. Then I found this video. Within an hour I was dropping 3 arrows into very tight groups at 30 yards. I haven’t shot this good in years and am amazed that I was able to increase my accuracy so quickly following the steps outlined in this video. I have found that I am instinctively drawing and my arrow is almost perfectly where it needs to be when I settle into my anchor. If it isn’t, I make the slight adjustment needed and the arrow goes where I want it to. I am beyond thankful for the detail put into this video and only wish I had found it sooner. Thank You!

I grew up with a small recurve my dad bought me. Heck even when I was very small I was shooting squirrels in the back yard with suction cup tipped arrows. I moved into wheeled archery when I was 18 and have killed at least one deer a year with a bow except one year when I could not seem to get a shot to save my life. I'm currently 54 and still do 99% of my hunting with a bow of some sort. I recently got a really sweet setup from a great guy who set me up with one of his machined risers and some uukha limbs and his custom strings. I am currently building some arrows and getting in some finger tabs and a few other accessories so I can shoot it, but I'm super excited. I've had a few nice recurves in the past, a Zipper being one the better ones but had no one to show me much back in those days. This video is truly a wealth of knowledge and although it is a bit long, it is very detailed and thorough. I learned a lot and look forward to giving this a try. Thank you for taking the time to put this together!

What can I say that hasn't been said 1100 times already? The quintessential video for any archery enthusiast. This will be the video I recommend to anyone asking about a good reference source for archery 'basics'. The blooper real at the end with the lads and your mates was really the icing on the cake. Really well done and thanks.

Wow!!!! Fricken wow! I had no idea about a fixed crawl. This a game changer. This video was literally exactly what I needed, I just changed to 3 under which has increased my accuracy but consistency is still the issue like most primitive/traditional archers. I am pretty much shaking I’m so excited to start setting up my knocks and measuring out my 25 yard point on. Thank you so much for this in depth video, I really appreciate the effort you put into it. I will be religiously following your podcast.

My son just started shooting NASP Archery and has been struggling with instinctive archery. I have been shooting with him after shooting open freestyle with a compound bow for nearly 35 years. I was struggling with instinctive shooting as well and was getting bummed because I wasn't much help to him. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video! After numerous videos and books I stumbled across this video. Hands down the best video on the subject I have ever saw!

I agree Matt, I've just watched this through from start to finish and just could not stop watching. This is to my mind the best and most complete tutorial vid on KZbin for archery ( and I've watched quite a few dozen ). The clearest explanations on setting up your bow, on aiming and tuning all the aspects of your kit by far. Matt Zirnsak, you are a legend, I have learned more in this one film that all the others I've watched previously. Great stuff. Many thanks to you Matt and your team.

Like so many others have already said - this is the best how to video on KZbin bar none. I think the big difference here is the fact that the producers of this video actually know what the hell they are talking about and not just out there making videos to make people think they know what they are talking about. Very very well done, great explanations, thoroughly covered and even the bloopers at the end were great. Had me laughing out loud. Great job guys!

I found this video, a couple weeks ago and, finally, decided to watch. Thank you!!!! I've been hunting with a compound for 11 years. A few years ago I bought a Bear recurve and tried my hardest to figure it out. But, to my demise, it went into the closet. Too hard to learn and quite frankly, it was a pain in the ass, not having anyone who knew what they were talking about.. About a week ago I decided to dust it off/ re-wax the string and go with the GAP method ( after watching Clay Hayes). Once I got a couple of arrows tuned, I noticed, right away, that I was getting tighter groups. But, this whole fixed crawl idea, sounds like the cat's pajamas. Two dedicated point on spots......who would've guessed?!?! I can't wait to get in the backyard and get this thing dialed in.

I just stumbled upon your video. I really can’t express how grateful I am for the information you provided. I have been shooting compound for about 5 years recreationally, and have recently become curious about traditional. Thank you so very much.

Instinctive archery is the absolute best, but it takes not 100's, but 1000's of arrows being shot at all sorts of distances. But once you start getting good at it is almost a spiritual experience with your intention and laser-like focus on your target being the only way you "aim". It is the most natural way to learn how to hit what you want, but most people do not want to take the time to do this. But if you have the patience to learn this way you will never gap shoot or string crawl again.
@Buran01

For a lot of people is not matter of "want", but of "can". I can only train in the archery club, 2 days a week, 5 hours in total, at most. Should I stay mediocre for a few years, risking to lose interest in shooting, or should I take advantage from a method which is faster to learn and works?

I want but can't. Not enough time to make it to the range to become an effective and consistent instinctive Archer, I've tried. My next go at it will be string walking and a fixed crawl.

I have been a compound shooter for 24 years. I have always been intrigued by traditional archery so this year a sold my compound and bought a recurve. I was searching for the best shooting method when i came across this video. Have to say this is by far the best trad video i have seen. By using the fixed crawl i was consistantly putting all my arrows in a pie plate from 25 yards my first day shooting it. Thank you for a very well done and informative video

Great film. I'm a beginner at 66 and looking to shoot traditional English longbow. Unfortunately bow hunting is illegal in the UK so I'm stuck with target and 3D field archery. Also I don't think you are allowed to string walk on a longbow in competition so I aim to try instinctive shooting and see how I go on. Anyhow, a great film all beginners should watch.
