The pants that belonged to hudson and were auctioned off in 2022 were 29 cm or 11.4 inches in length. To me this casts serious doubt as to whether he was actually 18 inches tall. If this was his body length from waist to ankles or even to the bottom of his feet then it would have left, what, about 6 1/2 inches for his torso and head? I don’t think so. He was tiny i have no doubt it but probably closer to 2 feet tall, his being tiny and proportioned is what really made people fascinated by him. I have seen primordial dwarves in modern times and they are similarly proportioned and also quite rare.
@Chimonger1
@Chimonger1 Ай бұрын
His pants then, if as seen in pictures, were breeches, tying below the knees. These were often poofed-up to give a balloon-like appearance. It’d be more accurate maybe, to figure that 11.4” length, halved by the poofing of them. So, maybe As-Worn, they might have been more like 5” or 6” to cover from his waist to below knees. The lower legs would likely have been slightly shorter than his thighs, so, maybe 4”. That leaves about 9” for upper torso & head. That could maybe fit the 18” height.

⭐It is common to measure the length of pants, from waist to hem on the out-seam.
@Chimonger1
@Chimonger1 Ай бұрын
@@GlossyHop 18” at birth, is within normal limits for newborn. So, yes, very unusual for a mini-person to stay at that height as they mature-but not impossible. What does seem impossible, is for one so tiny, to somehow develop proportional body dimensions, & stay that tiny-but it’s possible their body might “mature” in height some, to be a bit more proportional. He could easily have been malnourished, vastly slowing growth-in olden times, it was used to create miniature humans, specifically to sell to royals…a very heinous practice. And, measuring tools then, we’re not necessarily standardized. Those pants auctioned, could have been some he wore when he started to grow (guessing that happened when he got better nutrition, sunlight, & maybe exercise). Long ago, PT Barnum invented the term, “midget”, referring to little people who were proportional (as-in, legs not bent & out of proportion, for instance, like with many dwarfs), but that term was also used as a derogatory slur. But hey-if you got to be pampered pet of a Royal (not all were treated well tho), it was maybe a different story.

I believe he was a primordial dwarf because they are tiny but in perfect proportion. It’s highly unlikely he was only 18” tall. The drawings show him sitting on a horse….18” would be the size of a child’s doll. He would hardly have been able to function in any situation requiring the strength of even a 3 year old. More likely he was at least 3.5 ft.

It could to some level be a problem of lacking modern standard measurement units. Maybe the "inch" in these contexts was considerably longer then the standard imperial inch. like more like 2-2.5 inches. like the whole "Napoleon was particularly small" thing with the difference between french feet and english feet at the time. And later people just took the imperial inch at face value. Just speculation.

Treated like a pet.....punished like a man. The dichotomy. I'd be interested in the study of why he grew while being abused. Hormonal timing? 19" to almost 4 feet? oh, they had no idea what "caused" dwarfism, but I'm sure they made up fantastic stories. NO, they made him into a pie for fun? Ugh. He must have been gifted with a sense of humor as well, as he seemed to go along with the stunts. Charm and it would be extremely helpful in his position. Fascinating person.

I was expecting this to be about an evil dwarf who took advantage of his short stature to do terrible things. Instead, I feel sorry for Hudson. Look at it from his point of view: he has been treated as a curiosity or a pet his entire life. He has tried to prove his worth and valor multiple times. He wanted to be seen as a man, not a toy. On the day of the duel, the other guy shows up with a toy gun. He is a rich man, challenged by a peasant midget, so he plans to spray him with water, like he would do to an annoying dog, and have a laugh. Maybe he wasn't a bad person-he probably planned to buy Hudson a beer afterward-but he was not taking the situation seriously. For the little guy, this was the last straw in a lifetime of silently dealing with humiliation... and he had a gun.

Yeah they were shorter sure but it’s not like they were 3 feet tall, lol, and an inch per generation is just crazy. The average height of a man in the US today is about 5 feet 6 inches. Let’s say 25 years per generation, hudson was born in 1619 so 405 years ago, divide that by 25 and that was 16.2 generations ago which we will round off at 16. According to your suggestion this would mean the average height of a man in 1619 would have been 4 feet 2 inches which seems excessively short to me, but possible i guess. However if we followed this logic further back to the year 1300 and do the same math we would end up with an average height for men of 3 feet 1 inch or 37 inches. So, go back 37 more generations to the year 375 and we would have a height of well, 0, lol. Just saying.

Hudson murdered a royal. That’s the worst crime one could commit back then. And that Royal didn’t want to duel with him. How do you convince yourself to harm someone who’s 18” tall? It’s absurd. The Royal would’ve been shamed for life for fighting this tiny man; it was such an unfair fight.

I find it interesting how when commenting or writing about people's lives there seems to be a complete utter failure to try to grasp the point of view of the individual and the times that they lived in. This set is begun as though this man was treated poorly. Treated poorly, compared to what? 99% of the population or better lived in abject poverty and misery their entire lives. This individual who today we might might refer to as handicapped or special needs, was indeed exceptionally fortunate. The fact that he had to squirm out of a pie add parade up and down a table in front of elites shows how indeed fortunate he was. If you had not been scooped up by the elites of the day, it's not likely he would have seen age 10. Compared to what challenge. If you disagree with me I challenge you to put your cell phone down for an entire month and not pick it up. It's likely that would be called a hardship today.

If the 17th century portraitist, Anthony van Dyck, is to be credited with painting with any proportional accuracy, then Queen Henrietta Maria must not have been much, if anything, over 40" (3' - 4") herself!! Poetic licence is very much in play when some people, even Wikipedia, report Jeffrey Hudson's height to be a mere 18".

@@AltaMirage Absolutely. He was an object, little more than a toy, exploited for the amusement of the aristocracy. I suspect he was abused, as there is some evidence that folks him were sexually exploited, including as children by those who owned them. They were beaten. I can only imagine how much he resented all the jokes and cruel comments. He would not dare to insult them in return, but had to play along in order to keep the secure place the Queen had given him. If you were to read about the conditions of most people who were different from the norm during, you would be horrified. In many cases he would have been closer to the slavery he experienced after he was captured. For the most part, they were considered oddities, not human beings.
