I’ve just wondered what dress she was dressed in.I wonder if she was dressed in one of her beautiful colours? They said she was wearing her wedding ring and favourite Pearl earrings. She was an incredible woman,putting duty and country first,for 70 years,and all with a wonderful sense of humour! :) Her jubilee,then tea and marmalade sandwiches with Paddington, the olympics with James Bond etc. Her love for her horses and her dogs. It was very touching to see her 2 corgis and her highland pony Emma to see her home. She’s now at rest with her family. Her Prince, her sister and her mum and dad. Rest in peace ma’am...

I'm pretty sure she is probably wearing a royal shroud of some kind. Maybe of gold and silver. Her crest on it. Still wearing her wedding ring. Maybe some personal items put in with her. I don't see them burying her in just a dress. If it's ever opened, the body will be skeletonized so you need to see that this was a monarch. I'm sure she's resting very "queenly".

You had also mentioned that yes, she was Queen, but she was also a mother, grandmother, great grandmother... This is why I got annoyed when Diana died, everyone was having a fit that she wasn't coming back to England right away... Hello, yes, a Grandma who has two grandsons who just lost their mother... The people of England can wait, those boys can't. I just loved that while she did come back eventually, for that time, she made an exception & put family above country. I also loved her tribute to the US by having the band play the US National Anthem after the terrorist attacks on 9-11 & she simply did it because it was just the right thing to do.

I would imagine that designated embalmers would have been called upon for their services. I always wondered if they wore a special ceremonial gown once they’d passed away too. I’m thinking with her standard on it or something. I feel nosey wanting to know these things but I guess at the end of the day everyone has a right for some things to be kept private. Thank you very much for putting this together. It was informative. As I have said to you before, I am a Canadian so the late Queen Elizabeth II was my monarch also. I am not a coronation baby but I was born in December 1951 and she became Queen in February, 1952. When writing or announcing the Queen's death, the proper way is (with appropriate language) "The Queen is dead. Long Live the King" or "God Save the King". The Monarch decides who the next monarch is so unless there is something wrong with the Prince of Wales, he becomes the King the moment the Queen died. We are never left without a monarch. The expression is he ascends to the Throne. The next day, he was proclaimed King by the Ascension Council. Many people ask why Prince William is not King. If I may (and then I will shut up), King Charles has learned from his Mother for his entire life. I think he will be a good King for the next decade or so. Then Prince William can be King. I understand that King Charles is not glamourous, etc., but he is intelligent, well-educated and conscious of the environment (although he cannot have an opinion). He cannot vote. If there is a question of who won an election, King makes that decision (with the advice of many, many advisors). The other reason I think that King Charles should rule is that it gives the Prince and Princess of Wales the opportunity to raise their children in a relatively normal household. William will be King after Charles and George after William. So, theoretically, Charles will be King from 73 to 96, William will be taking over many of the King's duties as the years go by (just like Charles did) and George can be King after that. It gives each person the time to learn about government and world affairs while giving them the chance to raise their children. I hope I have been relatively clear and informative.

I have made lead lined coffins before actually, their about on par with a solid wood casket here in the sates as far as empty weight is concerned. A pine box coffin is usually about 60 pounds without anything in it, solid oak is gonna be a bit heavier, the lead would add about 100 pounds easily to it depending on its thickness.
@j.whiteoak64082 жыл бұрын
That's interesting, thank your! We do know a few details about the coffin. For example - Henry Smith funeral directors built Her Majesty's coffin 30 years ago - along with Prince Phillip's coffin and several others - Diana's, Margaret's, the Queen Mother's. I read that with all the solid brass fittings, and the Imperial State Crown, etc, that Her Majesty's coffin weighs in the vicinity of 700lbs (around 350kgs)...or a quarter of a ton - which is what Diana's also weighed. Henry Smith F.D's have since closed business, so the exact specifications such as weight are not known, but we do know that the current funeral directors have been responsible for maintaining the coffins for the past 17 years. I think it's normal for people to contemplate such things.. It's certainly been discussed in our household. I also read many years ago that Royalty, particularly Monarchs, aren't usually embalmed - and perhaps the only evidence of that might be in the air-tight lead-lining. I hope that information helps those who are wondering about such things. One thing we can all be certain of is that Her Majesty was the most exemplary Monarch in the history of Britain and she was greatly loved by all. Her loss is very deeply mourned in the UK, and throughout the Commonwealth, and the world. Rest in Peace, Dear Queen Elizabeth II ♥️

Very interesting funerary details! This event is like In 2005, when Saint John Paul II died. Topically treated his body and was not embalmed. After lying in state, the Holy Father's body was placed in a cypress coffin. After the funeral, it was placed in a lead coffin, finally the two placed in a elm coffin. lowered down by a chain fall in the Vatican grottoes. Placed in a vault... Anyway, I'm so glad you posted this. Thank You Keri! Special thanks Sarah, for her time!

Then, after they were removed the "holders" were left on the coffin, so was the the the which had held the Crown. When King put the Regimental Flag on the coffin, they almost got in the way when His Majesty was laying it down. It almost seemed like they couldn't be removed.

TWO QUESTIONS: 1) With present day embalming methods, isn't it possible to keep a body stable, without refrigeration, for at least 2 to 3 weeks before any decomposition or odor would occur? 2) The tiny St George Memorial Chapel vault has a single black marble slab on the floor, with a small, visible hardware piece at each end. How would they accommodate 4 full size caskets? Stacking them under the single slab? Or, I heard that caskets were lowered down through the floor in that tiny chapel, so there must enough room under the floor for handlers to accept the lowered caskets and then place them down there somewhere? Like a mini vault, beneath the floor, slightly larger than the above-floor mini chapel - designed for just four caskets? (Margaret had to be cremated in order to fit down there with her parents, and the Queen w/ Phillip too. I would hope that someone would have a little information about how they can accommodate four caskets under that single marble slab on the floor.

There are several videos out that go into detail about St. Georges Chapel and the Royal vault which is right below the Chapel. A lead lined casket has a separate lead box surrounded by the oak casket. The body is placed in lead box. The lead lid is then welded in place. Obviously a highly skilled welder performed this task. This process, without embalming, can preserve a body for centuries as no Oxygen can get into the lead lining. (Aside from the small amount in the lead casket.) So while we don't know if the Queen was embalmed, the lead lined casket made this unnecessary. This technology actually goes back to Roman times.

So many are posting the Queen's quote of "I need to be seen..." Many have asked me the question of why not a glass coffin top, for that specific reason & despite my heritage or my sudies of becoming a funeral director, cannot I answer that. However perhaps you can.... Either way however, the service at St. Giles was most touching! It definately had a both a 'familiar,' if you will & intimate touch. I'm sure the State funeral will be a far grander scale, but in it's one way, equally touching. If they didn't embalm her, would it have been possible to have refrigeration in or under the coffin? Is that even a thing? I would imagine they would have had to do some type of preparation for her, as long as she laid in state or is lead lining really enough? I know we will never know but I still wonder. I had also previously imagined that her body would have been publicly viewed so that kind of surprised me too. Maybe sometime in the future, when public grief isn't so fresh, the public will get some sort of insight into what goes into preparing a royal for final resting. I still have so many questions. Under the altar of St George’s Chapel, there is the Royal Vault. The casket was lowered as you watched on tv. From there the casket was placed for a few hours to be with Prince Phillip. Later that evening, and no tv cameras, both were taken up to be buried in the George’s VI chapel, where the Queen’s parents and her sister are buried. That ceremony was completely private except for the family, nobody from the public or tv saw it.

Watching the ceremonies is a fascinating peek to centuries ago. Though the more I see the more Im quite certain the Queen is not actually in that coffin. Taking the most famous female in the world hundreds of kilometers back and forth across the UK being televised nearly 24hrs a day is a security nightmare risk in the modern day. Her body is resting peacefully until the date she is placed inside and buried in St Georges with Philip.

It's not meant to be an intrusive question, or disrespectful at all. I appreciate and respect HMTQ, and the privacy of the RF. Sincere condolences on the death of a wonderful leader, who acted with such dedication, intelligence, and devotion. She will be missed. I pray King Charles has a long, successful reign. There isn't anything vain about any of the plans in place here. The Queen's life was entirely about duty and her death is no different. For the hearse to be about exhibition and for the funeral to also be about exhibition is nothing abnormal. If anything it is an example of what is expected from the Monarch. The funeral is as much for the people as it is for the family. To us British subjects, the Queen is like a member of your family. She is our Matriarch. Her passing affects us all.

RIP, I'm moved more than I thought I would be with her death. On the question of embalming... there must have been embalming given the time between her death and burial. She was processioned, lied in state etc. Whilst Royal, no one is exempt from decay. Only embalming would have permitted her to be carried around for 10 days, for the health alone of those who moved her whether be by hearse or carried on their shoulders in procession.
