James Dreyfus was cancelled for his belief in biological sex. The gender critical actor made a name for himself in British comedy series and Notting Hill but recently roles dried up after he publicly defended JK Rowling. Here, he tells the remarkable story of how his cancellation happened, and how he did not see it coming.

It seems as with certain members of the trans community as well as their supporters (David Tennant being a fine example is there's this misplaced sense that they're oppressed, or that their feelings should undermine everyone else's. It's like the militant transgender lobbyists who want to be allowed to use the *"same safe"* spaces inhabited by women. And anyone who disagrees with them are then labeled transphobic. It's lazy as it is disingenuous, and Isn't even a rational argument. It's like those who say they're offended when you criticize their religion for example. It's just a cowardly means to try and get people to shut up. It's exasperating.

The people who use the word "queer" ignore my history as a gay man. That word makes me cringe when I hear it used so flippantly, and for good reason. It is, historically speaking, a word that is soaked in the blood of gay men from the pre-gay-lib past. There was no difference to the haters, bashers, and murderers in the '50's/'60's/ early '70s between the word "queer" and "f-g". Both were used to taunt, to bully, to bash, to humiliate, to inflict injury or to murder gay boys and men in those years prior to the 1970's. If you don't know this YOU WEREN'T THERE like I was. The purpose of the word "queer" was to crush the spirits of gay boys and men who at that time had almost ZERO acceptance from the mainstream, just a lot of hate and shaming. There was no internet support then like now, We were on our own. I don't know who decided that this word should represent an entire community but it's utterly pretentious and he/she/they have probably never read a book about the history of gay people in their lives. Also, consider this: If your goal is to get others to respect and accept you as people, as human beings who are, in actuality, not all that different from the hetero majority in most respects why in the world would you chose the word "QUEER"?? It is a wonderful word in its original definition but as a label foisted upon an entire community it suggests a freakiness or strangeness that is clearly counter-productive to gaining acceptance and equality. It emphasizes how different we are, not how similar we are to those who dislike us. I It makes us sound weird, strange, or "special" rather human. The people embracing the word "queer" are trying so hard and failing so obviously to bring our expanded community together and the new "pride" flag(hideous, actually)also reflects this same mindset. I will not ever identify as "queer". This word should be canceled, it's dreadful and it's casual and pervasive current use does nothing to "take the power of the word back". PLEASE FIND A DIFFERENT WORD.

The exhibitionism is sometimes harmless, but sometimes worrying. In my line of work many of my customers are wards (usually children or vulnerable adults) with their carers. There seems to be a policy in some Local Authorities to place children in the care of the exhibitionists - political, LGBTQ+, or both. Children are often placed in care for their protection. We all know that work in Childrens' Homes has given predators access to victims at scale in the past (infamously at one close to where I lived, where ALL the staff abused those in their care). If a child has been sexualised by an abusive parent or has gender dysphoria, why would anyone put that child in the care of someone who makes an exhibition of their sexuality? Positive affirmation? DEI? Arthur Marshall MBE described in "Life's Rich Pageant" how he - a gay man - worked with others in The Vetting Office during the war, and they sent all RAF officers who were being reposted as "suspected homosexual" to a single RAF station. I thought that was hilarious, and wondered whether it was RAF Gaydon - or the Vetting Office. However, if child abusers ran recruitment for child care in a Local Authority... that would be horrific.

I'm a very anti-Woke gay person if it matters. I have no problem with criticism of Pride extremes but the double standard gets on my nerves. It's the result of years of religious right propaganda painting Pride as perverse. There are a number of hetero dominated events with the same sort of exhibitionism. Most conservatives are not even aware because their propaganda doesn't go there. The Bay to Breakers marathon in San Francisco for example. Lots of nude straight people having a good time, plenty of children have witnessed it. The annual nude bike ride is another example. Nearly 100% nudity. There is only outrage when gay people show their parts in public. This is generally limited to environments that tolerate extremes. California and NYC for example. Most Pride events in flyover America are pretty mundane, reflecting the cultures where they take place. Not sensational enough to aid in anti-gay propaganda.

I worked in TV for about ten years. If you make a success of any role, the consequence is that you are repeatedly offered similar roles. Roger Bolton, who suffered the same fate because of the success of his investigative documentary, 'Death on the Rock', advised me never to specialize. If you are perceived as a specialist or particularly good at something, that becomes the only kind of work you can get.
