Aug. 23 -- Talis Esmits is on a quest to recover the remains of every forgotten World War II soldier in Latvia. The farmer and his motley band of volunteers spend their weekends digging up the Latvian countryside in the hopes of recovering and eventually reburying the dead.

Agreed, they all served and died for their countries and families, they all deserve to be returned home. Some other idiot in this comment section said all germans were nazis and bad men which is incredibly stupid. Not all were loyal to the nazi party, some were just young soldiers fighting for their country. RIP to all who served valiantly in the face of a war like ww2.

It's so caring and respectful to give these soldiers identity recognition, and dignified burials, and their families proper closure. These unearthed soldiers must have been born in the 1920's or earlier, so it's unlikely they having living relatives who remember them. Still, it is so honorable not to forget them.

I know this is Latvia,But in Vilnius,Lithuania,at St Peter and Pual's church there is a mass grave where 668 German wounded were murdered by the NKVD,Taken from the St Peter and Paul church,thrown out of the windows into a mass grave and buried alive. Also in the Vingis park,Vilnius, there are countless murdered Germans entombed,their bones rest below the childrens park there. This happened at the end of July 1944 after fierce fighting for Vilnius after the Germanswere surrounded. Taken from an autobiography of Bruno Sutkus,Sniper Ace.Something needs to be done,the same as Talis Esmits is doing in this vid. I wonder if the parents of the children know what their children are playing on? Much respect to Talis Esmits.

cuhurun I didn't know the British had fiber dog tags? This is true? I am an American, so I wouldn't know.
@cuhurun
@cuhurun 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Clem... yep, indeed. They were produced in a hard fibre material, similar to old style tap-washer material. The WW1 and WW2 type were issued in two colours, a rusty reddish colour for the tag which would be removed from the dead, and the tag which was left with the corpse was a shade of blackish green. Of course, with different production batches the shades did differ very slightly, but only slightly. Back in the early 80's, when I joined the British army they were fairly much the same as the WW's issue, but now they're produced from a non-corrosive alloy. I've been on excavations in Flanders, and every Tommy we excavated had to be classified as 'unknown'. Sometimes a disc would still be evident with the remains, but in every case the fibre had expanded and deteriorated in such a fragmentary manner that the details were sadly completely gone. Anyway, all the best to you, mate. Cheers !

Fully agree there. However, dog tags were items that could be lost just like anything else people tend to misplace; it might also be the only thing that survives if the soldier is totally destroyed, even if it's uncommon. However, in most cases, a full dog tag does indeed belong to a person and might have been taken off a corpse.

Salute to the diggers focused on finding, recording, and hopefully giving each found soldier's remains a proper burial in a proper location. As far as selling dog tags, these dog tags have the identification of the original soldier. If they cannot be given to the family of the soldier, then those who buy them must own them with respect. After all, each dead soldier from any side was a victim of a highly unnecessary and senseless war that must not happen again. Good job diggers, you are doing the right thing. Every Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, from what ever country lost and forgotten should be found, buried in a grave identified or returned home to their country or family. I was stationed at Hickam AFB Hi for a time and the most solemn thing I would see, was when an aircraft was taxied to the hanger and the Honer Guard showed up. When the ramp came down, they went in and took possession of the metal casket and took the remains of some military person to be identified. All work stopped, all saluted as the casket passed us by. Every respect was give to the dead, even if it was an enemy soldier, that body or remains deserved respect.

This makes me feel very good. I have thought very often of all the forgotten fallen. Guess I have cell memories from the swedish wars as my forefathers were soldiers many of them and I felt like a soldier already as a very little boy all the time playing war and the sounds around our town was shooting and explosions day and night and the forests and fields were full of things as if a war was going on like a very natural part of the daily life.

olentangy74--Trying to identify them is as important as giving them a proper burial. There are some elderly women who would give anything to know their husbands were found and to know what happened to them. I wonder if any of them never married anyone else because they thought their husbands were wandering around with brain injuries or war-caused mental illness. There are also brothers and sisters and adult children. Even the children would be senior citizens; I hope they find these men's identities in time.

The other, younger brother Wim Sprenger died somewere in Russia after being skinned alive ,crusifix him and taken his eyes out, and let him suffer for days, while animals were eating off him, until he died. But never returned home...This is how this whas told to me, the story off my grandma telling about here brothers...If it's true, i do not know, what i do know, is that they never make it home, dead or alive..It would be such a great gift if someone could find them, so i, the grandchild off my grandma can burry them and give there grave there name's....Thank you.
