Very cute quilt. I laughed when you said there are no quilt police. I was at a small quilt show last weekend and one of the guild members had her 2 sons, maybe 11 and 12 years old, wear black t shirts with “Quilt Police” in sequins on the front. I thought that was a cute idea as they were walking around. 😀

Am so looking forward to your tutorial on this subject because from time to time I purchase fabric that I absolutely bond with and am not going to cut up, but I simply do not know what to do with it except for a tie quilt (nothing wrong with tie quilts -- I love them). But not even desiring to interrupt the pattern with the ties, I've yearned how to handle this dilemma. Great timing. Thank you, Stacey.

I have adopted a method for spray basting that I really love. I use an old flannel sheet on my dining room table and that is what I tape down. Stacey, as always a very informative video! I have a few special pieces of fabric that I've not wanted to cut up, but didn't know what to make with them. You've given me the confidence to try this method. I really do not like pin basting as it's my least favorite part of making a quilt, but I know it's necessary. Now I need to try the spray! I'm not very good at the quilting part either, but I really liked your hearts and I'll give that a try as well. Love the rounded corners, too!

Great tutorial and right before Christmas too…hint hint…gift idea! You asked so I’ll comment still too much spray. Odif is my favorite, but expensive. Basically you want to use as little as possible to get it stick. And safety pins not necessary unless it makes you feel more secure. After all…as my son says…you do you. And you said, “there are no quilt police”. I really do love your tutorials. Thank you so much for posting them❣️

Enjoyed your video! I almost always do whole cloth quilts for baby quilts. No stitches to pull out when it gets washed. I like to do straight line quilting such as chevrons coming out from the middle or a grid of squares. I use minkee on the back and it shows off the stitching beautifully! (And I don't entirely trust the basting spray, so I both pin and baste!)

This has nothing to do with the video, which I loved and am totally going to do by the way, but I just finished my very first duvet cover thanks to your encouragement! I wanted something fall-like, so I just did patchwork style in fall colors, but I went back to all your videos on how to piece and attach and such; It is so perfect in my eyes and I love it-my husband even commented how nice it was! In one comment section you encouraged me to try quilting and while it wasn't exactly a quilt I made it had all the elements (except for batting). Anyway, thank you for your kindness and amazing teaching skills. You always make me feel like I can do it and it doesn't have to be perfect.

You are right hahaha! That was waaaay too much spray. Probably double what you needed. Move faster and fewer back and forth passes. LOVE this easy quilt. Perfect for holiday or other novelty fabrics. Thank you!

I have found that the 505 spray works really well. I have never used pins. Another thing..if you use pins you may damage your table, so one needs to be careful about that. Thank you Stacey for this great idea!

Thanks for sharing, Wanda! 😊 I’ve heard great things about 505 spray too. And you’re right-being careful with pins around the table is so important! ❤️ Glad you enjoyed the idea!

I have only made two quilts, so I’m no expert, but I was taught to use a few pins even with the glue like you did.

Thanks for sharing that! 😊 Thanks for the tip -it’s always good to have a little extra security with the pins! ✂️

Great video .. I can see myself doing one of these soon .. and I do use pool noodles to baste .. my secret for using pool noodles is to lay each noodle on a flat surface and mark a straight line from one end to the other .. this is helpful to start your fabrics/batting straight on each noodle otherwise your fabric can go wonky .. ask me how I know .. again, I loved your video ❤❤❤

Thank you so much! 😊 I’m glad you loved the video, and that’s such a great tip with the pool noodles! Marking the straight line is genius to avoid wonky fabric-thanks for sharing! ❤️❤️

I’ve never spray-basted because I’m always afraid it’s not archival and can damage the fabric by not washing out completely when I wash the quilt with a neutral soap. Maybe it’s just the old chemist in me that doesn’t trust propellants/alcohols and fabrics. Lol. Like you, it just seems counterintuitive. I used to be one of those who used binder clips to hold the quilt onto the table. Now I know it doesn’t need to be taut! I still use a large 6 ft (2 meter?) banquet table (or 2!) to pin baste. It’s easy to throw cutting mats underneath so I don’t worry about scratching the table over time with the pins.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 😊 I completely understand your concerns, especially with your chemistry background! It's great that you’ve found a method that works well for you with the pin basting and binder clips. And using cutting mats to protect your table is such a smart idea! ❤️

I think a combi approach is a good method to use. I made a baby quilt a few days ago and simply basted the layers together with (a lot of) pins. I was only doing straight line quilting but didn't use my walking foot. Afterwards I then found there were some puckers in places where I guess the layers hadn't stayed together well and shifted unevenly so I had to unpick a few sections and try to manipulate and adjust the layers and requilt those places with the walking foot on. This did improve the appearance but I think I could have avoided the puckering issue altogether by using some spray baste as well as the pins!

I spray baste and use just a few pins in the outside and center just to be sure there is no movement

That sounds like a great technique, Kathleen! 😊 A little extra security never hurts! ✂️🌟
