I read somewhere that Gareth Evans actually wrote this movie first but didn't have enough budget to put it in production, so he wrote a much simpler movie with a much less budget that is The Raid 1. Fortunately it did a very good job commercially so when he finally got the budget that he needed in the first place he made this masterpiece.

considering how ambitious the plot for this movie was, that isn't surprising. every character has a fully fleshed out backstory and extended fight sequences dedicated to showing off their characteristics my only gripe is that it is almost an exhausting watch in length and doesnt really pick up until the prison scene, but at that point its just the best thing ever

to bad that the plan of making raid 3 was discontinued, i think evan spoiled the plot of it in recent interview with arifin putra, he said that the plot of it will focus of yakuza gang from the raid 2 when they penetrate indonesian market, he said the movie will bring the fight in the raw indonesia jungle. damn that will be interesting movie.

Even the mafia bos' son, we love to hate him. The emotion he showed when he was about to pull the trigger was so vulnerable. All the characters are amazing.

Great stuff mate!! These two movies are just absolute fucking instant classics seriously, I must admit I like the first more just through it's simple intentions and execution whereas this one begins to feel a little convoluted.. but it's still VERY GOOD. So no hard complaints haha. But great review too man I really like how you touched upon the more emotional side to it when it comes to the main guys family and all that kind of stuff, really well said. And also just something else im appreciating here is the music! You didn't overdo it or make it annoying, but just as kind of fun, energetic filler (like how it should be!) Also that prison fight scene, fuck me dude lol

Thanks M8! A lot of my early videos had no background music and they just feel bland. A little music goes a long way.

I agree with you on this movie being so fantastic, but I am going to disagree with you heavily on the editing of the Bourne Ultimatum fight scene and counter that it was not garbage at all. It probably is something you can't stand, and I can understand that, but I recall that fight was done that way on purpose and to me I was able to follow it well because of that documentary style Paul Greengrass was going for with the shaky cam, and the cuts were at the right moments. Normally, I do dislike the use of shaky cam, but I remember the editing being mostly fluid, even if there were multiple cuts because I could feel the chaotic intensity of Jason Bourne struggling against this assassin and I don't remember anything being hidden. That is something I can never say about a lot of other movies that use this technique like in Taken 3's awful fight scenes and even that first fight in The Hunger Games which felt so unecessary just to bring in the PG-13 rating. Even in Batman Begins, while I love that movie has some jarring editing that confuses the hell out of me. I didn't feel that way with the Bourne vs Desh fight. I even learned that other directors decided to copy that style from that fight and learned the wrong lessons.

Finally watched the movie because it's finally on Netflix, but I honestly disagree with you. The story was good (and very similar to sleeping dogs or any crime family movie/show), but it was painfully obvious from the start that the son would make a power-play to remove (or kill) the father; literally just saw it in Warrior season 2 (great show, btw). This isn't saying the movie is bad, but the concept of set-up and pay-off was a bit too much. Mad Dog 2 was pointless to me other than to show off Yanyan one more time. He had no business being there. The scenes with hammer girl and bat boy set up the pay off with the fight with Rama, but they were taken out so fast that it was totally unnecessary. The fact that everyone has guns and no one has guns at convenient times really took me out of it honestly too. The movie, like the first one and kinda like the Night Comes For Us tries to pride itself on gritty realism, but to me, it just becomes gratuitous. The prison riot made no sense with everyone turning complete psycho all of a sudden, the gore drifts into the edgy category a bit with people's skin and bones made of paper and glass respectively, and everyone has enough blood in them to fill a pool. Once again, the movie isn't bad. I love martial arts movies, and the scenes were really well shot (despite some pretty bad shaky cam at times). The undercover cop drama was pretty well done too. That all being said, this definitely wasn't a perfect film, and it honestly dragged on for me. If you don't cut out bat boy and hammer girl, at least cut out mad dog 2,; it was unnecessary filler. Anyway, I'm not sure if you'll see this since your review is around 2 years old by now, but I give the movie a 7/10, maybe 7.5.

About a year late to the party but I would HIGHLY recommend Gangs of London which was also directed by Gareth Evans. It is a 10 episode 10 tv show so definitely not always action/martial arts scenes but when they show up, Deer Lord is it amazing!! If you would only wish to review those that would be amazing. Story is alright for what it is, a bit stretched out by the end but definitely one of the best series I have seen.... Ever Also Warrior a new series is quite interesting.
