And of course Hungary doesn’t have any money, but we bought back the Budapest Airport for 3.1 billion euros, while the whole Hungarian public transports yearly budget is 1.5 billion euros.

Austrian here - yes, the Railjets are damn nice, but the interior can be a bit dark, and there is one dark horse with our pinnacle of current rail transportation - it's called 'the german corner'. As soon as any train passes over the border it's magically hit with at least 10 minutes delay. Or 100 minutes, you never know with anything that touches the DB rails.

Sorry Guys, we really would like to improve the DB, but instead of giving the starting pistol for a sprint, the conservative and neolib parties will shoot the DB in the leg and then say "see, my BMW is faster!" It's so wonderfully fast and convenient when you are on the few routes where the ICE doesn't have to share tracks, but everything else makes me want to ragequit. By sheer luck tho, I commute via trains in one part of Germany where the punctuality is above standard

Here's a Hungarian gag about our railway system: *Dear passengers! The Budapest-Szeged Intercity train will be about 3 hours late because the passengers are pushing it too slowly!* Now here's some additional context if you have time to read: Why is the Hungarian railway system as crappy as it is? The lines were laid down before the country was carved up by the Trianon treaty, before the treaty the system was extremely efficient, concentric and made a lot of sense, THEN the treaty happened, a lot of lines bisected orders, whole rail lines had to be decommissioned, etc. Redoing it fully so the network would make more sense was infeasibly expensive and the country was left with a railway network that made no sense in many cases, like once I had to travel up North from the middle of the country almost to the capital just so I could go back South to my home town, basically making a 1-1.5 hour trip into a 3-4 hours one. Because of the previous issue, investment into the network fell to the wayside, then due to slim to no maintenance, issues started to pile up, whilst the network was modernized to a degree, it was never corrected nor properly maintained, the rails are crap nearly everywhere to this day, they rather tell railway conductors to slow down to 10 km/h for a kilometer or two instead of fixing a warped section of rail and they leave it like that for decades before fixing anything, that sort of deal. Ganz and MÁVAG were competent companies and Hungarians still have a lot of incredibly competent people numbering amongst them, most of them since left the country for better paying jobs abroad or just to escape the political BS. In the meantime the government is still short-sighted, greedy and corrupt as it ever was, even in the socialist era things were functional all things considering (since the Soviets were actually keeping Hungarian corruption in check to maximize their profiteering, they demanded results), however now the country is mismanaged into oblivion because Orbán does not like competition and only employs yes-men in key positions, a.k.a. "competency is undesirable" syndrome, just like the Rákosi era between 1948 and 1953, there was famine, a housing crisis, you know, basic dictator crap. Now it's an unemployment crisis, a massive brain-drain, even worse than it was during the socialist days, mass poverty, inflation and the list keeps piling. Whenever you see how Hungary as a country doing stupid things, it's political, ALWAYS political, it's not the people but the elite. If you ever want to understand the BS, like the blatant lies and such, just think what FUNCTION the BS serves and it will make sense. It's basically manipulative legalese mixed with Soviet-style propaganda. Nowadays even the Russians don't do it as well as Orbán and his thugs do it now. There is a reason Hungarians tend to leave Hungary behind. You don't owe allegiance to a government that does not give a damn about you, what you want, what you need, what threatens you, the government serves itself first and foremost, the people are an afterthought. This has been like this for a long-long time, hence the people no longer really care enough to actually do something. Whenever Hungarians rose up against oppression they received terror and retribution as a response. Basically we have multigenerational PTSD from our crap history and this shows everywhere.

I really miss research for the sake of research. We had the British Rail Research Division in the UK up to the point of privatisation in the early 90's. We invented things like tilting trains, the Automatic Warning System as part of the signalling system and played with all manner of different class types just to see what did and didn't work. They just did stuff with no particular end goal in mind, just the idea of making something new and better. This is where your really need public ownership of things like this, private companies just aren't (by and large) going to do something that can cost a bunch of money and time and have no direct return on investment.

That also worked along side British Rail Engineering Limited which well built the stuff. Alot of that they done still remain on the network, the signalling system is simple electronic circuits but it works very well. ontop of their final rolling stock which still going but due to privatisation we were robbed of it's full capabiltiy and replacement.

Technically MÁV (the main Hungarian rail operator) is a state-owned entity. Why they aren't doing research, or improving public transport is beyond me, I guess they're too busy stealing money from publicly funded projects, and seeing the infrastructure crumble around the country, because letting a single person win all the construction projects with their company, and collaborating with the chinese are surely not going to bite us in the ass later. Basicially in Hungary MÁV is like Internet Explorer. You don't know if it's going to work or not. Sometimes the trains arrive on time, most of the times you can count on 15-90 minutes of wait. Once I was unlucky enough that my train was delayed 180 minutes.

Czech here. The naming of train sets is a great idea in my opinion. Especially for non-train people from the marketing perspective. Because when you say "we ordered 10 new class 650 EMU´s" normal people have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. But when you say "We ordered new RegioPanters" then everybody knows. And not only Czechia does this. For example Italy does something similar. I am not saying the way we do it is the best. There are flaws like for example that the ComfortJet should have been named as RailJet (2). But at the end, the trains and units would have receive nicknames either way. Just not officially.

I think it´s great for new trains that gonna be ordered in high numbers and become staple at specific kind of services (like Regio Panters, City Elephants, Foxes amd even RegioNovas) but it´s kinda silly with trains ordered in small numbers (like Sharks) ot some that occasionaly appear somewhere in small numbers (like Regio Spiders, which no one ever reffered as such) and it´s straight up idiotic on fucking old 810 that already had like billion nick names. And I guess ČD chilled out with it recently with the push-pull unit not receiving any official name and renewed Siemens Desiro for Liberec region also not receiving any name.

Siemens was backmailed Hungary when they refused a cooperation on the new nuclear power station Paks 2, build by a huge international consortium lead by Rosatom, but there are US, France and Czech companies also. Starting from Szeged after the first station the train is already 7 minutes late and the transit time at Cegléd is 7 minutes. I miss my transit at Cegléd from Szeged on average every 2nd week and the last 2 months of travel (mid march-mid may) it was more like I reach my transit every 3rd week.

Alright, I'll fight you on the Railjet: As an Austrian who also lived in Switzerland for some years and never drives or flies, I have used the Railjet upwards of 200 times. There are a few major problems with it: It has a comical amount of technical issues - every fifth (longer) ride, you get to experience an emergency stop due to a drive control failure. The seats are exquisitely uncomfortable, I will take any Stadler train any day over the Railjet. The space is basically only designed for solo travellers or couples. There is absolutely no space for families and only a tiny playground/tv screen "theather" for children. It is very noisy, as there are too few seperations. There is very little space for luggage and no space for skis (a very common occurance in Austria in the winter). All of these things are better designed in the Swiss trainsets. Finally, the capacity is very low for the length - they really should have gone with a bi-level layout from the start, something which they are now amending in the new orders. Often, two RJ are coupled together and then you get to walk a good half kilometer to the end of the platform, due to the single level layout. I'm very thankful for the Austrian train service overall, but the Railjet being the best HSR? Never.

@@yadakakadu as a German I haven't had the Blizzard experience yet (though I'm admittedly most comfortable with temperatures slightly below 20 so ymmv), what I do however get to experience every summer is the amazing combination of broken AC, locked windows and 35+ degrees in the shadow - with everyone just trying to somehow survive until the next stop, so at least a bit of air can come in through the doors in recent years they've begun to phase in new regional trains called Süwex though - I'm always happy when I see one of them instead of the old ones arriving

What are you talking about ? MAV purchased 160 Stadler EMUs (FLIRTs, KISSes), and also many Desiros, few Talents in the last 10-15 years. This is more than in the 30 years before 2010. They renew many major lines, they build a complete new line towards Belgrade. Look into the statistics. In Austria they invest into railways almost €1000 / year/ head, in Eastrn Europe similar number from CZ is just €116, and Hungary is about €110. all other countries around invest less than €100 for railways. On top of that the ticket prises in thise countries are just a portion of ticket prices in Austria! Do not forget, the recent railway reconstructions are about 2-3 times more expensive as 20 years ago, due to the new safety (ETCS) and other requirements ( like water management, noise killing etc) these are facts and generally 1 km reconstruction of a single track on mainline cost about 8 millions Euro. This money somebody must have.

Also, in Czech Republic in South Moravian District the local government bought its own trains called MORAVIA and now they are leasing them to the Czech Rail service. These trains are really amazing (wifi, bike racks, etc.) and run on the local lines from small villages to Brno (the capital).

I used to take them to school and it wasn't really pleasant and now these are like from a gift from heaven and if it wasn't for the purchase from the JMK the old ones would still be in service here.

Brazil used Hungarian trains (TUD Ganz-MÁVAG) in the seventies and early eighties. They were deemed very comfortable, but went quickly out of service because they supposedly did not fare well in the hilly routes they operated.

Not only Brazil, but also Argentina had the Hungarian DMUs. But even the metro in New Zealand had Ganz units. In Africa Egypt and Tunesia had/has Hungarian DMUs or coaches.

It makes sense. The majority of Hungary by area is Alföld, which is just a steppe as flat as it can be. Even in the northern, more mountainous regions I grew up in, there are plenty of valleys, and other "easier" terrain around large cities, which is where train lines usually operate. Plus the highest point in Hungary is almost exactly 1000m above sea level, we don't exactly have big mountains. We don't really have the requirement of trains that can work on really sudden elevation changes.

@@krkngd-wn6xj those vehicles were not designed for Hungarian railways. In Hungary there were no such trains. One larger DMU was designed and built for for government in the early 60ies. This is still existing in museum. On the other side Ganz designed from late 50ies several DMUs used mainly for international express services like Hungaria etc (Budapest, Bratislava, Prague, Berlin). Those trains were quite popular and several neighbore countries purchased such units (CSD, DR, PKP). Their bigger counterparts the D1 trains were very popular in eastern part of the former USSR - baltic states, Ukraina, Moldavia etc). Many of those DMUs are still in service, several of them were rebuilt in Romania and are used now in international service.

Nice presentation! Not many people realized how great was the BVmot back then. The only issue with them was due to the fact that the three units built was only pre-production prototypes and and Ganz never had a chance to fix the issues what they identified in the prototypes in the production sets as no further units ordered.

Hungary does this with everything. Arts, sciences, etc., just because it doesn't fit into the narrow field of what a dictator thinks as "success", which for Viktor Orbán is soccer, and "real, hard manual labor". Even if they not get directly targeted, artistic endeavors get cut short thanks to the low-paying jobs (now with 12 hour workdays if you work at a factory!), so everyone's number one priority is to leave the country ASAP, with art being a luxury for many. I struggle a lot with developing games my own way (using my own engine), and I saw many people either giving up their own projects, or sidelining them so much they release stuff after a lot of time as they didn't had enough time besides a full time job and many other things.

As someone who lives in Austria and has traveled by train through Germany and I hear "train" and "Germany" in the same sentence I think about cutting something alright, but its not the "edge". Three out of the last fourt times I was delayed but more than a third of my total travelling time. No offense to our German neighbours but something tells me quite a few of them might even agree with me.

yes, that can sometimes happen when you privatize state owned rail infrastructure and operation in order to generate dividends for the state, split it up into about 200 different entities that pay each other money, neglect the infrastructure for three decades and in the end fire ten thousand staff because the dividends are too low.

Reminds me of late 50s GDR "VT 2.09" that were still running for years after reunification on some lines. I think they had 2 gears and every passenger visibly moved when it was changed. Also there was not much seperating you from the engine which had less power than many cars today but made noise like a ten wheeler. Great stuff for a kid.

I haven't ridden Austrian railjet but I have ridden Chinese high speed rail a lot and it is epic. Not only is it extremely reasonably priced - you'll see every economic 'class' riding them, trains are always on time, sparkling clean, and they turn the seats so you're all, always facing forward, like on an aeroplane. Did I mention that they have hot water dispensers so you can bring your own tea / noodles? Truly the pinnacle of travel.

The Czech obsession with naming trains goes further than the physical types though. I recently learned from my family there that ČD started naming the services of semi-fast trains (the second slowest category, "spěšné vlaky"), so you now have a 3-car Regio-something running between Jihlava and Telč like it was the freaking Orient Express 😂

Yeah, last month there was this insane heat wave, pretty much all the trains got cooked. Some bootlicker or other actually said we should not use the trains. I was caught at the start of it, fortunately only had to travel once (but it was a 4,5 hours ride, one way) At this point, just put us out of our misery.

In Czechoslovakia had electric multiple unit for suburban transport back then in 1960s (class 451). It was mostly low floor, accelerated like crazy and had automatic doors. It was withdrawn in 2018 well beyond it's planned lifespan.

They were in the news last year as Newag would brick their own trains if they were being serviced by 3rd party repair shops. Dragon Sector, the hacker group who brought this to light, had a great talk at last years hacker convention "CCC". I'm sure you could and would be interested in adapting this story for a wider audience.

So... about that naming: Yeah, ČD does tend to get a bit overboard, but they can't legally use Railjet for their new sets, because it's a trademark owned by ÖBB. Their seven actual railjets were essentially bought off of an original ÖBB purchase contract, and they're operated as a joint venture with the Austrians. The sets are owned by ČD, but the corresponding Taurus locomotives are on lease from ÖBB. The product is designated "ČD railjet" and the timetable shows the train category as rj. Their subsequent purchases (InterJet/ComfortJet) are their own, and so they chose different branding, even though among those two it's arguably splitting hairs. As for the regional trains, it started with the RegioNova and CityElefant back in the late 2000s and for some reason, the branding seems to resonate with the public, so they stuck with it.

As a hungarian this made me tear up, due to my family being poor and now studying at the university, i could safely say i took 2-3 train rides a week for the past 10 years on average(every week yes), and my dad always used to joke how these trains very shiny and new when my grandpa was in his teens (early 1960s) U can say what you want abt the Hungarian State Railways, but for 4,5 euros students can ride every train and long distance bus in Hungary for a month(yes, the entire country), and recently it was expanded to the public transport of Budapest(same 4,5 euro pass), so for basically free id say its fucking awesome

Half of the cars are intercity and the others are "tópart express". There is AC on the intercity but its a bit pricier as you also have to purchase a seat reservation besides the ticket. Tópart express has no AC and you sit wherever you find a free seat

Sorry to be that guy, but DB doesn't really develop their trains, they give specifications they wish for to manufacturers like Siemens, Alstom, even Skoda who then develop a train (or give them an already in production model with minor adjustments). And the specifications themselves (for regional services) are given by the federal state. So if a state says that they don't want Wifi in the trains they're not going to have Wifi and vice versa.

This somewhat similar to the Danish IC3 series (with the IR4 and the Øresundstrain). Yes, the original IC3 is a DMU, but that is fine, especially considering the need to load it onto the ferry where there wasn't any overhead electrification (the ferry was thankfully replaced by the Great Belt fixed link back in 1997). A decent series of multiple unit trains, which were quite frankly amazing. Designed with the concept of splitting the trains into smaller sections along the route, so that you could cover different parts of the country while also conserving capacity along the main route to Copenhagen, which was limited. Unfortunately, the government decided that what we really needed was a new diesel multiple unit, which was bought from a cheap Italian train factory. That meant that the factory, which had been turning out all electric IR4 units, was shut down. Finally, the new DMU trains got delivered years late, took another half decade before they ran halfway decently, and much of the new train fleet has been gutted for spare parts and scrapped, and the new train is scheduled to be decommissioned years before the old IC3.

My town used to have railroad in northern hungary, my grandma was the conductor and the only manager of the railway office until 2005. She retired that year, and the entire line was closed in early 2006 by MÁV to cut costs, and now the line and the building are just rotting there. it wasn't that fast, the line had only diesel BZs, but you could still get to the capital if you just hopped on the train in the morning. Now commuting to the capital from here is so tedious, having to change buses 2 times, and then change to a train halfway through. You're better off with taking the car to a place where you can actually board a train. Now the sate of the railway company is getting worse and worse along with the tracks, thanks to the competent leadership and government. it's a shame, really. But hey, now we're going to take loans for railroad from one of Orbán's best friends, CHINA. Going to be very awesome surely.

RailJet is OBB mark, so only OBB can use it legally. And if you ask about ČD Railjet from Prague to Graz, OBB has special deal with ČD that they can use it, becouse on that line there are both: ČD and OBB RailJets. So they have to must come with something similar. Comforjets are just international InterJet (same design, just with bistro car and control car).

Funny enough, the Millenniums Falcon sound from Star Wars is actually the sound of a BART train from the Bay Area! BART was brand new at the time, the pinnacle of modernity. It was a space age system with fully automatic trains 80 mph (130 km/h) speeds and a completely digital centralized "brain". So trains sounding like the Millennium Falcon is actually a thing! Literally a thing!

Well, you'd think that the Stadler KISS is for mid-short distance commuting, but because of the lack of proper high distance trains, MÁV actually uses them as "Inter Régió" trains. So the Stadler KISS crosses half the county (Nyíregyháza-Debrecen-Szolnok-Cegléd-Budapest) with zero luggage space.

Czech rails were always a league above Hungary, it has the most dense rail network in the world. Its kinda unfair to compare the two.

On the other side Hungarian railways were more unified, what simplified the maintenance and also the operation. If they decided to upgrade something on the network it was always a big step, not like the CSD. Look in the 1960ies when they started the wide electrification. The V43 ( around 500 units) covered almost all requirements. Something similar happened also with the diesel units, and also now. No one of eastern railways purchased in very short time 160 EMUs from Stadler. 😮 Only ÖBB has a similar philosophy with their 500 Taurus locomotives and hundreds of Railjets etc. this is the main diffenernce on one side with ÖBB and MAV on the other side with ZSSk, ZSR, and CD where the variety of different vehicles and motor units is almost endless.

@@railfilm Czechia (or ČD to be precise) is trying to unify as much as possible. RegioPanter/InterPanter EMUs, RegioShark/RegioFox DMUs, the only 2 locomotive types that are supposed to stay in operation is the Vectron and the 362. It's just that this takes time, but yeah, still a lot more unified than in the past.

@@martinytcz1762 I know quite well the recent situation. Those new vehicles help a lot on main and frequent lines, but for the secondary branch lines there is no optimal vehicle. Also the population of the country is much lower and it is not easy to design a train for branchlines with daily few hundred passengers, and most of them wants to travel in the early morning hours or late afternoon ( workers, kids to schools etc) while the rest of the day is slow.

Maybe so, but still, our problem isn't/wasn't the network, we still have plenty enough density for a country this size - even after numerous closures. It's the entirely f.cked operation and financing. It's not even that we don't have the money, we just don't have our priorities in order.

@@dddaddy you know the railway system in each contry has different aspects, and it is not easy to find the optimal way. In many regions the railway is the only thing what couples the people with the open huge world. The transportation from such regions is more or less a social question, who is going to pay for it? Look, as I know, only in Hungary have the seniors ( not only Hungarians) completely free travels. In Slovakia is something similar but not for all trains. In Czech republic you get just bigger discounts on ticket, but it is not free. There are also similar conditions also for schoolkids and students. In Austria one pay for a 30 min ride on suburban(SBahn) train over €12, with some compensation (retired, student) it is still over €6-7 . In Budapest it would be in most cases free travel on a similar or better trains (stadler). On same tracks, probably with similar personal. Somebody has to finance also these priviledges.

In all fairness, Amtrak just looked at what's happening in Europe, picked the "best in class" premium intercity service (Railjet), and cloned it for the entire US. Now every daytime intercity Amtrak train is an Americanized Siemens Railjet with a funny nose! And because Amtrak pretended to never get the memo to cancel it's rather iconic land-cruise overnight trains, the US actually has a solid network of night trains. And because Biden is a train guy, the Acela is getting $60 billion worth of upgrades that will make it a solid mid-HSR line! So this was semi-accidental and they did cheat by just buying the best and most expensive intercity option. But it is kind of true that Amtrak is becoming surprisingly good these days, especially compared to the last couple of decades of neglect.

We have Intercity+ in Ukraine as well - fugitive Yanukovich’s legacy - same shitty idea of remodeling old soviet train cars and installing a TV at one of the ends (once I was traveling on a train car with a fat tube TV 📺 hanging from the ceiling on some belts)

The Polish railways have talked about push-pull sets, and then received a single offer for 3 BILLION euros for only 38 trainsets. PKP cancelled the tender due to it being double the stipulated maximum budget, and has re-tendered for electric multiple units. Complicating matters further, train toilets that dump onto the tracks will no longer be permitted to operate on Polish tracks starting from the December timetable change this year, necessitating the scrapping of a sizeable amount of passenger wagons and some old EMUs in regional service.

Reminds me of Polish PKP in the 1980s and early 90s. Sometimes the doors didn't close properly and would just stay wide open during travel 😅. Also the toilet was just a hole over the tracks.

You should seriously check out the danish IC3 trains and their story. Great trains that’s been in service since 1993 and still to this day most preferred train. In general you should hook up with some danish train youtubers and give Denmark a visit. The public transportation is definitely something for you.

we have similar shit in slovakia where we build lots of new cars, only 2 thirds of controll ones were equiped with engines and there are still instances when new train comes with locomotive from 70s

Man, you definitely need to make a video about Brazilian railways, in specific those in São Paulo. Some lines were sold to private companies and quality of service declined. Not to mention the issues with monorails projects.

Just because you don't mention that in your video: The Swiss did invent the same concept a few years earlier. The Domino or NPZ trains basically tell the story of how this concept would have developed in Hungary (low-floor intermediate cars etc.)
