Former immigration lawyer here. Darrell, his daughter and her husband need to hire an attorney who specializes in immigration law. Darrell is likely referring to the Affidavit of Support, which is a routine document in family/marriage based immigration petitions. This affidavit is designed to ensure the immigrant has financial support IF, the immigrant ends up in a situation where the immigrant needs support (job loss for example) so the immigrant doesn't need to rely on public benefits. Signing the affidavit doesn't require the person signing it to hand over any money to the immigrant. However, if Darrell is not comfortable signing it, he should listen to that voice. His daughter and her husband can try to find someone else or perhaps the daughter can quickly meet the income requirement. Bottom line: Hire a competent immigration attorney. I'm originally from Michigan and know it shouldn't be difficult to locate a good attorney on Darrell's side of the state (assuming his daughter and her husband live there as well) I saw far too many situations where people filed on their own or were given incomplete or insufficient information and ended up completely screwing up their lives. In some instances, deportation was the result. Again, hire an attorney.
