The Rape of the Samburu Women | Short Documentary

For more than fifty years, England has maintained military training facilities in the Samburu region of its former colony, Kenya. During this period, women in the area have faced an epidemic of rape.
➔ Women from the Samburu, Massai, Rendile and Turkana indigenous communities have filed more than 600 official rape claims against British soldiers. Yet, despite documentation of their claims, a three-year internal investigation by the Royal Military Police (RMP) cleared all soldiers of wrongdoing.
➔ Meanwhile, the victims have been shamed and outcast in their communities, many to the point of exile. In the mid-1990s, Beatrice Chili responded to this situation by establishing the village of Senchen, a self-sufficient community run entirely by women. There, women build homes, weave textiles, gather and grow food, and raise children. This short film visits the brave women of Senchen, who speak candidly about their suffering and talk passionately about their demands for justice.

There is little justice even in the Western world for rape victims. There are n witnesses and the man says it was consensual sex. There are very few prosecutions and even fewer convictions. I believe it is 2.5% conviction rate for court cases in the UK...That is the tip of the iceberg. Most women do not report the rape because of the legal ordeal and lack of chance for justice.

Two years later in another province I had ultrasound done that showed I still had one fallopian tube. It was cruel & uncalled for a doctor to tell me young woman if almost 20 that she would never conceive. At 25 I became pregnant with my “miracle baby “ who was the joy of my life but he died 9 years ago in a hiking accident . Larry Madowo did a report on it a month ago on CNN (June 2024). That mixed girl’s mother died 2 yrs after this video and the girl is now grown up and searching for her father but she’s poor and suffering. Actually there are military bases in many different countries, especially by Americans. They are strategic places to base airplanes or other military resources. Apart from those bases, there are army bases in Germany, which have been there since the end of the Second World War - British and American.

There is no need for a African base in Europe because Africa is not going to be expected to take military action to help anyone. Britain and USA have major obligations on them and believe it or not they try to keep the peace. They are also UN and NATO members, so have obligations with them. They try to keep the peace with the UN. I think some African countries participate abroad in UN peace-keeping military missions. Treaties are what dragged Britain into WWI and WWII and being in the UN (or NATO?) dragged us into other military operations. We are the helpers who have to carry the financial burden of that. We also pour many millions of GBP or dollars in foreign aid into Africa and Asia every year. But you can't tell.

It was worse for the children born in 1910's, 1920's and 1930's. My dad was born of a Nandi mother, his father was Scottish. Many grandmother's and grandfather's in our neighbourhood were extremely fair skinned with very fine lose curly hair. Because accusations of rape are hard to prove in any country. Unless tests are done immediately afterwards, there is no evidence. The existence of a child is different. It could prove paternity but not rape. The children, nevertheless, whether of a rape or consensual act, deserve child support like any child.
