i own a 21 colorado zr2, really got blown away by the ranger raptor and even test drove it I just can’t pull the trigger with these crazy markups in socal so i’m just waiting for the prices to go down a bit or maybe get a new zr2 for around 48k, but that tt v6 and the tune and live valve suspension is just all around solid since I do go off roading

8:38 Technically the ZR2 name plate is much older than Raptor. ZR2 was first introduced in 1994 for the S-10 pickup and was discontinued along with the S-10 series in 2004. It was revived for Colorado in 2017. Ford first introduced the Raptor for the F150 in 2010.

Looked at the regular ZR2, and it was super nice, cooled seats are amazing down here in SW, but found a Raraptor at msrp, didnt even hesitate, put the deposit down and picked it up the upcoming weekend. Probably the coolest vehicle I have had and the 400 hp motor doesnt play around, after 1k miles it opens up and it is amazing and the suspension is so supple on road its like an old Cadillac or continental, really really good. I dont rocl crawl but got lots of desert to rip around in so it works

@@paultarbox4092 From the Edmunds review the Colorado ZR2 A/C is sub par in the Desert. The editors all stated the A/C is so much better in the Raptor Ranger. They stated they were all fightning to be in the Ranger Raptor in the desert testing because the A/C was so much better than the Colorado ZR2. So the seats may be cooled in the chevy but the A/C is so lask luster the cooled seats can not make up for the weak A/C it has.

Both Ford and Chevy did a good job with these mid-sized trucks. Agree the Chevy looks more aggressive and actually like the interior better also. However, the 3.0l in the RR matched with the 10 speed transmission is really fun. Reminds me of the Audi S5 I used to have.

Think the Ranger Raptor is better for “daily driving” and most general off road/ dirt trail cases. But if you’re a true hard core off-roader (rock crawling, intense over-landing, trail maintenance worker, etc) then the Chevy is absolutely your pick. But generally think the RR is probably better for most people, but honestly shout out to both companies for giving us good options because both are great vehicles!

Why is the ZR2 better for overlanding? You can't carry as much and that 35 is going to get in the way. If you really want to put 35s on the RR you can and the spare still fits under the truck.

@@kalijo1 I hear you! But I did say “intense overlanding”. For “normal/moderate” overlanding I agree the RR is better. However, since the Chevy doesn’t have the spare underneath it greatly improves its departure angle, maximizing its approach and line ability. When one does intense overlanding, usually you will have some sort of off-road trailer set up to carry everything you need. This is what the Chevy can do and not lose any angles (especially with a flex hitch) to trade off the spare in the trunk bed. But like I said, how many people are actually doing it this hardcore? Not many imo

I think that Gladiator and Colorado need a better engine and Frontier needs a better off road package. Ranger needs a better intermediate off road package so bring back the Tremor. I think the standard ZR2 is the best bargain/capability combo followed by the trail boss. High $50s to mid $60s for a mid size is crazy talk.

I don't like to be a lazy driver and rely on auto headlight functions because in most vehicles the auto lights functions are not calibrated to come on in many situations or they come on when they don't need to be on. For example, oftentimes it rains but it's not dark enough for the lights to turn on automatically. Yes, many vehicles will still have the daytime running lights on, but that doesn't help the people see you from behind to better judge the distance when the water from the road is being turned into a mini cloud behind your vehicle. Auto headlights also come on at times unnecessarily when stopped temporarily under an overpass and when they shut off after driving out from under the overpass, they can cause people to think you are flashing your lights. This can cause confusion should a person be trying to change lanes in front of you. It also just causes unnecessary cycling of the lights being turned on and off more frequently. I won't go into how using your headlights to let a semi know it's clear for them to change lanes in front of you helps to prevent accidents or letting on coming vehicles know that they are approaching a hazard or slowed traffic ahead may help prevent an accident.

Heck, go to TFL's video today, 10/14 and Andre has a Chevy trail boss and discusses this problem. It's a safety problem and he has had 1st hand experience where the screen doesn't work or having to wait for the screen to boot up. Another example is camping, when you don't want your headlights on but maybe want the parking lights on. Your argument is one of laziness and responsible drivers understand the safety aspect, which is how I know you are a lazy driver.

@@2011buddyleeeven if the raptor “smoked” it, that doesn’t make it the better off-roader. The RR is not in the same class as the Bison. With less clearance, smaller tires, no rock rails, less suspension travel, less underbody protection, no underbody cameras, no full metal bumpers, an inferior infotainment system, less customizable off road instruments for the gauge cluster and Home Screen, no real buttons for lockers, etc. with that said, both are way better than the TRD Pro 😂

@@2011buddylee The 2.7 turbo isn't a slug. I think on a regular trim (lighter than the Bison) it's in the 6's to 60mph. It feels like a diesel in normal driving, mega torque below 2000RPM. I thought I was going to hate it a turbo engine, but it's super quiet and makes effortless power where you need it.

If you want to buy an AT4X or ZR2 and do opt for the underbody rust protection - remind them to tell the mechanic / tech not to spray the cameras. The guy who did my AT4X didn't know there were underbody cameras and sprayed right over them. Thankfully it was the first thing I checked at pickup - took them a few extra minutes to clean it off.

I love your videos Ben. Thank you! I think you summed it up perfectly. These trucks are designed for specific use cases. What’s the terrain like where you’re going to be using these trucks? I live in the northeast in mountains and hills. The ZR2 fits my use case given my terrain and hobbies. If I lived out west where the terrain is more open, the Ranger Raptor might be a better option. I just don’t have any desire to pick brand fan-boy sides like so many people do these days

I like the look of the Bison better, and if you only use it occasionally to rock crawl, then it's ok. If you plan to daily that thing, it's not even close to Ranger Raptor capabilities... RR overall better off and on road... Besides, owning a "Raptor" sounds cooler than owning a "Bison" even tho we're only talkin bout mid size segment. Ford established the Raptor nameplate as a bad ass trim, regardless of its use, kindda like what Denali trim is all about when it comes to luxury

I went with the Ranger Raptor it will go all the places that Chevy will but allot faster and with better A/C that keeps you cool in the Desert unlike the Chevy's A/C. Edmunds found that out in the desert testing where Chevy had poor A/C out in the Desert temps and Raptor Ranger had the best. They were all fightning to be in Ranger Raptor out in the Hot Desert.

I think the Bison is in a class of its own so not sure why it gets compared to the other mid sizes while the normal ZR2 is the model to compare. I came from a previous gen ZR2 to the Ranger Raptor. I drove the ZR2 for 5 trouble free years but talked myself into getting a new truck for some reason. I test drove the new gen Canyon AT4x. I was going to get the AT4x/ZR2 but the roof issue was forcing me to get a sunroof which was annoying to sit in at 6' 2" and a deal breaker. The new Ranger has way more rear leg room than the Canyon/Colorado with my seat position. I don't like the Ranger rear seat cargo configuration with the non-split seats. The new Canyon/Colorado does not have folding seat backs. Pick your poison. The multimatics in my previous gen were amazing and softer than the Raptor. I've seen reviews saying they were firmer but not in my experience. I feel highway joints on one section of regularly driven road in the Raptor that I did not in my ZR2. My Raptor is at 39 psi as per the door sticker but I'm not sure that is still too high (They were 45 psi off the lot). I ran my tires at 32 psi on the ZR2. The Raptor engine blows away the new and previous gen Canyon/Colorado. The HP difference is very noticeable. I drove it 1,000 miles of highway, most of it into a headwind, and still got 17.5 mpg. My previous gen ZR2 was getting 15mpg on the long highway trips and was constantly downshifting to maintain 75mph. The Raptor sits in 10th gear except on extreme grades. I would have bought the Canyon/Colorado if it wasn't for the sunroof. The typical price difference is enough to not make the Raptor benefits worth it. The slam dunk for me was actually getting a significant discount on a new Raptor which brought it inline with AT4x pricing I received.

I think when comparing trucks like these you should really show and compare the OPTIONS you get for adding the Bison option to the Colorado, and the OPTIONS you get for choosing the Raptor. Judging by the list of options just from the second they were on screen it sure seems like you’re getting twice the amount of add ons with a ZR2 Bison. One thing i wish both these brands did was putting the dual panel moon roof in them like the F150s and every SUV now have😅 GM doesn’t need to bring a V6 gasser back they need to put the 3.0 diesel engine in these midsize trucks.👌I’ll take towing power and 40MPG all day everyday.
