I'm inching closer to a solution in this second part of a four part series, trying to fix a Honda RC45 that's almost impossible to start from cold.
If you can, please consider becoming a patron and gain access to the awesome motorcycle repair Discord chat group! Thank-You.

Jim, don't worry about the 'Waffleage' it's entirely interesting and, with regard to the length of the videos, also don't worry. I'd say that most of your subscribers would be glued to the screen for hours just to see the outcome of all the seemingly impossible situations that you're presented with. Absolutely riveting content. 👍

Not sure where you are on this one. But, I am fairly sure that this is a temperature sensor fault. I don't know if it has an air temperature sensor or a complete MAF, but the only thing that is not constant is the temperature. It's running lean on cold start, so what controls that? Well for starters the sensors, then the ECU, fuel pressure and lastly injectors. MAF sensors are in my opinion what most often fails. If you don't reply here I'll post it on your Discord to make sure my idea is heard 😊 Cheers (the connectors in between is also a must to check of course)

Very interesting. Maybe using a colour tune would be better for getting the individual cylinder adjustments right in this particular case.

Have you tested the coolant and air temp sensors ? ECU is being told engine is warm when it isn't and ain't giving the rich mixture needed for starting

Could also be worth checking oil/air temp sensors if fitted or TPS? quite common on the GSX1400 I found, Also the STPS for cold start can play up. I know it's a different bike but these are some things I have come across.

what are your temperature sensors reading when cold? I've seen where a out of calibration temp sensor, or one that goes "open" at certain temperatures can really mess up your day. the computer is totally dependent on the big 5 sensors (or 4 depending on the vehicle) to calculate for the fuel map to use- air temp, coolant temp, oxygen sensor, throttle position sensor, mass airflow/manifold pressure sensor- and with that, i would (before condemning any sensors) check the reference voltage to the sensors and sensor grounds (and don't just ohm test the grounds- check for voltage on the ground circuit under operating conditions- a wire can ohm good with no load but fail when under a load). bad in is bad out......... . is there a way to see the data list for the computer? engine cold, the intake air and coolant temp should read the same. when cold start, the computer shouldn't be using the oxygen sensor input, but it has programming to input values to keep the engine running. then look at throttle position sensor (you did say it runs good warm, so i doubt that's it), then the ignition input. also you said it runs good warm, so i doubt its a mass airflow/map sensor. one last thing: most Japanese computers are rarely the problem. i've seen in my whole 30+ year career probably less than 10 computers that were truly bad- it can happen, but it's rare.

WTF's with the cliffhanger.(joking of course)......Could of at least given it a quick turn over and see if there was any difference. Those little pots are obviously quite sensitive little beasties if they make that small of a difference. I think you've gone the right way by going full rich and see how she goes. The only way to set them up properly is to have a funky graph machine like you have to measure pulse width. The engine must also be picky about the amount of fuel that it likes for start with a fine adjustment. Can't wait to see how it all goes in next weelks video.

@ferguscawley11

No. It's fuel injected. It has a fast idle cable that increases the revs only. The bike needs a richer mixture which is achieved via additional fuel commanded by the ecu. Straightforward enough really.
