Enter the bright lights of the Takarazuka Revue--new summer anime Kageki Shoujo follows a group of first-years entering a prestigious all-girls theatre academy based off the famous Japanese troupe with dreams of becoming a top star. An adaptation of the manga by Kumiko Saiki, it's a grounded exploration of the Takarazuka Revue's structure and cultural significance. As such, let's take a look at the history of this theater style to set the stage for what you can expect to see in Kageki Shoujo!

@@kumashock4074 Demonize lesbians? I'm pan and I still don't see what you are reaching for. Tamaki hates guys and girls that wanted Haruhi very equally tbh and while at first he wanted Haruhi in a dress, after she roasted him for not letting her be her, he accepted her as whoever she wants to be. The only reason he was devastated that Haruhi kissed a girl is because they kissed. Literally never even brings up the gender.. ever.

It has 70s Shojo vibes, and it has many Rose of Versailles vibes, something I really love, but it also imitates Glass Mask, especially on how it shows that Sarasa’s style is natural and how it differs from the others. Still, it has its own charm and it’s more realistic than other anime series.

As a guy who's heavily into Takarazuka I find it difficult to be a part of the larger community. The fanbase being largely female, and very fanatical at that. Is very difficult to be a part of. It used to be lot more difficult than it is now though, as now there are digital tickets and you can watch the shows online. Before tickets would sell out within minutes, dvd's were quite limited and there were barely any fansubbers or recorders giving anything to the west. Though over the years lots of things have changed in general, the Takarazuka school's rules have also changed to be more progressive, as students weren't allowed to talk back to seniority or even make out of place facial expressions. It led to bullying a lot of the time and like mentioned in the video, Takarazuka is competitive, from stories of Takarazuka stars to reports from the school (Which are rare) there were many cases of girls verbally harassing each other and more out of the school. These things have changed now, but the intensity of the school largely mirrors the fanatical nature of the fans. It's gotten a lot better now due to internet access but people would camp out for days to get tickets, or to even catch glimpses of their favourites. Most fans are very respectful but still go to extremes for very little things, like handing a letter or a gift, people would pay large amounts of money or camp out to get this sort of chance. Constantly following a chain of information given throughout the community. But Takarazuka is incredible, and it's only become more famous with time. While I prefer the more traditional performances myself and will always stan Anju Mira, the performances have adjusted for a more widespread audience. Doing things like Kenshin or Utena. More than anything else Takarazuka is a fantasy, it's very different from broadway as commented by many on Takarazuka's tour in America. If anybody is interested in any sources for videos, merch, groups of information, drop me a message or something. The fandom is very open and niche in the west. Edit: The anime and manga is fantastic btw. A bit of a romanticized take on Takarazuka but nevertheless it's got a lot of accuracies. The characters are fantastic especially Ai's throughout the series. Vol 9 hairstyle is 10/10 too.

Thank you, first of all. While I am familiar with Anime as a whole, having watched various titles since childhood days, I am still rather new to the world(s) of Shoujo. You may say this video is by no means an extensive deconstruction of Takarazuka and that may be true, since it is meant to heighten interest in the Anime Kageki Shoujo. However still, with your enthusiastic yet gentle and collected presence and delivery you make it abundantly clear that you are reflecting the passion that has been put into all the mentioned works of art. Often times, when people try to achieve multiple things at once, they end up reaching neither. Yet you have peaked my curiosity with this neatly edited and honestly driven video enough to look further into both the Anime and the real life art it is so heavily based upon. After having watched Kageki Shoujo, it is now even clearer to see why you would be so excited about it as to recommend it with such precisely chosen words. Both this video and the Anime have smoothly helped me gain a better understanding and appreciation of Shoujo. Like the cultivation of love, it takes time and effort to make something short. And it shows. Thanks again.

Also, I would like to see Hayami more developed (also people think he's a creep...which well...idk, all I can say is that it's complicated) A manga I recommend checking out though is Kenrantaru Grande Scene. The manga has also some awesome references that sadly might not make it into the anime. For example, Sarasa states that she will become a top star before Luffy becomes King of the Pirates. But one reference I really liked that was in the anime was the red roses that were given to Sarasa, in which there was a card that said, "from your red rose fan", which was a reference to Glass Mask, but instead the roses were purple.

I'd never seen Shojo anime before and saw this in the new season so I watched the first episode just wanting to find out what shojo was like. I was expecting it to be cringe, but I was very wrong, its actully very good. It was not at all what I expected. Its a mature story dealing with ambition and the sacrifices it takes to get to where you want to be.The characters have interesting back stories which adds a lot of depth to the entire anime. If you fancy a change from martial arts zombie slayers or kawaii slice of life this is a refreshing alternative.

Many of the shoujo anime are actually pretty dark, from what I've seen. A lot of people misinterpret it as being "too girly", while I disagree. While there are the cute romance stories, there's some great shoujo series like Glass Mask, Rose of Versailles, and Onisama-e.

I literally just went down a research rabbit hole because of Kageki Shoujo (shout-out to the youtube channel "WhyILoveTakarazuka" for explaining the specifics so clearly and in-depth). Definitely one of my favorite new seasonals next to Sonny Boy and Case Study of Vanitas!

I really loved Rose of Versailles and Utena and Oniisama e didn't sit with me quite so well but I certainly appreciated the drama, and Takarazuka has interested me for some time now, so I guess I'll be reading and watching Kageki Shoujo. You put a lot into these ten minutes and you won my interest (and subscription).
