I loved this as a kid and it still stands out today. Along with The Innocents with Deborah Kerr I can watch and re watch them again and again. Still gives me chills.

The original The Haunting is a damn fine movie.

Such a towering film. So, confession, I first saw the 90s remake in the cinema (which as a kid I loved because of the sound design and VFX) and it's terrible but still hold a nostalgic place in my heart, but once I finally saw this one I was totally flawed. Man Robert Wise was pretty amazing when I think about at his eclectic filmography. This one is just so considered in the way it's shot, edited and performed. The complete opposite to its remake in terms of ambiguity 😆

Also the 1961 film The Innocents is truly a classic horror masterpiece. Based on the novella The Turn of the Screw (just like The Haunting of Bly Manor series many years later). Must. See.

I read the Jackson and Matheson novels back to back and now, years later, they're both mixed up in my head as one big haunted house story.

I kept thinking about The Legend of Hell House.....and then you mention it. Kudos! 😄 I love Matheson. And Beaumont. And now, fof whatever reason, I've got The Eyes of Charles Sand in my head. It's not like the ones you're discussing here....and it's not "great"....but definitely worth a watch. It was a part of my childhood. I always loved the spooky stuff. 😄

The ghost's incessant banging whilst Eleanor and Theo lie together in bed. That scene is terrifying. Julie Harris is perfect for that part.

While the original is a genuine masterpiece and the remake is awful I must confess to being absolutely enamoured by the remake's insanely beautiful set design. I wanted to live in that house...and have a 13 Gosts wing built on.

"It's just as much about the notes not being played as much as it is the notes being played." As a jazz musician, allow me to explain because it absolutely DOES sound pretentious. A lot of Jazz features improvised soloing that is performed on the spot by knowing what the chord progressions, key, and associated scales are. When soloing, as long as you're playing notes that are correctly in key you're fine. But that doesn't mean more notes are better. Sometimes, what makes the music really hit the listener correctly is playing the notes at the right time, allowing enough space to be present so when the note is played, it has an impact. Not everyone plays this way. But Miles Davis was the all time King of, as we call it, "playing space". The man had a gift with taking the right amount of time to pause between notes, making the notes not played, a powerful option. The best way to illustrate this is on the Miles Davis album, "Kind of Blue". John Coltrane is on saxophone and plays a lot of notes. Always was his style, and he owned it with the kind of mastery that few musicians ever can. Then his style is juxtaposed by Miles Davis who played about 25% as many notes. But the way he played them is what made his solos just as amazing and incredibly beautiful. Playing a few notes, with just the right spacing between them enhanced that there were so few, and they were powerful notes that hit the listener. I hope that helps. If you haven't heard it, pick up "Kind of Blue" as it really is a wonderful album and highlights the different styles of Davis and Coltrane in a way that just makes both seem irreplaceably amazing!

I saw the remake with Liam Neeson first and loved it. The original, not as much.
