So, with that out of the way, lets take a look at the Sandworms as a naturally occurring species in Arrakis as per the commentary of the Dune encyclopedia. For centuries, it was widely believed that the majestic Sandworms of Arrakis were the culprits behind the planet's desertification. However, a shift in scientific understanding led many to reconsider this notion, proposing instead that the sandworms had adapted to the desert environment rather than causing it. So, According to the research after the disappearance of the worms in Arrakis, they came to a conclusion that from the very beginning, the evolution of the sandworm was a remarkable tale of survival and adaptation.
The second one here is the Sandworms as an alien species introduced to Arrakis. This origin story is actually treated as canon since it was teased Early in Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune. Here, Leto II reveals to his twin sister Ghanima, that the ecological change Dune is experiencing will lead to the death and mass extinction of all the sandworms. In the book, Leto said that"'The sandtrout'was introduced here from some other place'" which means that because he had prescient powers, enabling him to see the past, present and future, he was able to see past the written and manipulated history of humanity, he was able to view the actual origins of the sandworms and much of what had happened over the thousands of years.
Now, lastly, with Leto’s statement of the Sandworms being introduced to Arrakis in the past, lets take a look at them as a genetically engineered species. We would have to do investigative work here guys, just as in the real world, we follow the money, here we follow the spice. So, since the spice was said to have been first discovered here in the planet of Dune, that means only one thing and that is, this is an intentional by product of a species genetically engineered for the desert world and made specifically for the conditions of this planet in order to manufacture the much needed compound.

I haven't read any of the books but I constantly hear that the series gets weird after books 1 and 2. They sound pretty interesting though. I'm glad you cover their relevant context on your channel.

Super genetic altering, no aliens but the humans themselves after certain collectives have genetically altered themselves over so much time they might as well be alien.

The books make it clear that the sand-trout are essential to kickstart the sand-worm life-cycle and the terraformation of their planets. The trout locks away the water, multiplying as they absorb the water, making a truly dry dessert develop and expand, in which the trout can mature into worms. In the books, the Houses always dumped mature worms on experiment planets, leading the worms to die from water-exposure, without leading to the formation of sand-trout. Eventually, the Bene Geserit manage to kickstart a worm-lifecycle on their home-planet, turning it into a new Arrakis. So the theory is probably a combination of both - a naturally occurring species manipulated by some unknown party.

Another explanation as described from Brian Herbert’s expansions: the worms on arrakis predated the fremen and the thinking machines. Given that they don’t find them elsewhere, and they have such a difficult time synthesizing worms or spice, it’s unlikely they were engineered off world. However they may still be the result of human intervention on arrakis. The earliest character described interacting with a sandworm the expanded timeline Brian lays out is Selim Wormrider. When selim rides his worm out into the desert, he is able to find refuge at a centuries old weather station buried in the sand that had powerful moister collecting units and had gathered thousands of literjons of water in that one weather station. Selim discovered dozens of these weather stations that have trapped and contained the planet’s moisture. These moisture collectors may have caused a runaway effect that left the entire planet arid and created the conditions necessary for the development of a sandworm

No true aliens are ever encountered, but mysterious ruins were found on various planets across the Empire, dated to thousands of years before the reign of the Emperors. So, who knows? Something was there before humanity, but if it was an earlier branch of humanity that went further earlier or if it was the Thinking Machines or something truly alien, we will never know.

There's implication of alien existence when Leto the second has a vision worse than human extinction by thinking machines (AI), and that was subjugation by "something else" So they're out there. The Duniverse does a fantastic job being strange, very much sci-fi and raises the question of what it is to be human, without aliens.

The issue with introduction by humans is the length of time it would take to turn Arrakis into a planetwide desert. Were humans an interstellar species at the time of the woms' introduction? Could the worms be the work of some ancient Tleilaxu? Or, could the worms have been seeded by some other, nonhuman, spacefaring race? Or, given the time-manipulating nature of the spice, could they be a human creation transported back through time from some far distant, paradoxical future? Since no records of the ecological and environmental conditions on pre-worm Arrakis exist, it remains a possibility that Arrakis was already mostly desert, akin to Mars but warmer. Looking at the situation contemporary to the era just prior to human habitation of Arrakis, the planet must have had an atmosphere thick enough to provide thermal insulation and dense enough to allow liquid water, necessary for the sand trout stage, even if that water was scarce. What isn't addressed anywhere in the books is what the worms breathe. We know they exhale oxygen, and (correct me if I'm wrong) that the oxygen is liberated from silocon dioxide (sand) by the worm's biological processes. Do the creatures respire the same way at all stages of life? That seems unlikely, given the tremendous physiological differences between the sand trout and the adult worm. All this to ask, what was the composition of the atmosphere of Arrakis, pre-worm? What stage(s) of the worm's life was the non-wormy Arrakis compatible with? In the end, Dune is just a space-fantasy and we shouldn't try to make it something it was never intended to be: hard sci-fi. Just enjoy it for what it is.
