actually, in nintendo's splatoon 2 octo expansion interview with Mr. Nogami, the, Nogami said that their skin is so thin because they need to give up their skin thickness in order to have the ability to walk on land. Because their skin is so thin, they can't swim in water.

"I thought Ninendo likes science!" - Well technically the theory with the inkling's skin being "too thin" as framed by Nintendo is, in fact, science too although much simpler and biologically seen less accurate than your theory of ocean accidification, as I as a biology student at university can confirm. The concepts to which Nintendo most likely alludes are two: The concept of "osmotic shock" while combining it with their ultra thin membrane makes sense. Take it that inklings e.g. have an extraordinarily high concentration of positive ions in their body, more so than the concentration in the ocean or fresh water. The ions then build a certain pressure to dissipate and equalize the concentration of positive/negative ions on both sides of the membrane. If the osmotic pressure is big enough the membrane can get torn apart with the result of the equation being the inkling bloating and "exploding" in the water similar to a cake inside a vacuum. The second scientific term hidden behind the skin being "too thin" is the biological trade-off concept in evolution which basically says that every (pre-)adaption carries a selective dis-/advantage for an individual while on the other hand proving disadvantagious elsewhere. E.g. the giraffe's long neck on the one hand lets it reach nutrients in very high places while being hindering during fluid intake on the other hand. The giraffe-species over time "traded" its ability to drink properly for reaching elusive nutrient sources. Having explained that you can surely figure out which "trade-off" the inklings made during evolution. Capability to breathe with their skin on land by "making" it thinner ,and hence, more efficient for the ability to live in water.

It could also have something to do with Osmosis. Since Inklings and Octolings evolved to live on land and with Nintendo saying "Their skin is too thin". This could point to not only the Oceans being more acidic than normal in this universe, but also to the fact that water likes to be in balance. So when you have an Inkling/Octoling, who may or may not have as much salt in their body, compared to the ocean, which has a TON of salt, There's gonna be some problems, the ocean would be ripping the salt out of their poor bodies, and due to this sudden change in salt levels, might cause them to instantly burst when they hit the water.

I believe you meant water, not salt. Osmosis is a water-specific term, otherwise it's called diffusion. Regardless, it would do more harm for them to have water dragged out of them (down the cg) than the salt (which wouldn't exit, rather it would enter)

I actually just commented that. It makes total sense and I think that the change of concentration in water doesn't need to be changed for that to happen. After all, if they have a skin so thin that it allows osmosis to happen then they have the problem of having water coming out and considering that they probably use liquids for stability in their form rather than hard structures, which would be needed for them to change form properly, the damage would be even worse.

The document Lockstin shows as he talks about them having bones, in addition is one of the hidden scrolls in Splatoon 1, which specifically states they have no bones and support their body with liquid-filled bladders.

What if inklings and octolings can swim it’s just that they have to compress their bodies while doing so? While in the compressed state inklings and Otctolings can’t obtain squid form which could explain why they don’t conmpress mid battle. The reason why the water causes the inklings to explode is because the water infiltrates through the skin of the squid/octo kids causing their insides to expand rapidly till woomy goes boomy and Veemo goes Boom-o.

My theory is that the Inklings and Octolings simply aren't buoyant enough to stay afloat. Without a real skeletal structure they don't really have any muscles, or at least strong enough muscles to be able to stay afloat. They are pretty much entirely ink anyway, and without any bones or strong enough muscles to stay afloat, they drown like they've got cinder blocks strapped to their feet.

You know, i find it pretty hard to believe that people say they've gone through all the evidence when they fail to a dress the fact that, in S2 Hero Mode, in the section with the long platforms moving back and forth in a pattern, Marie explicitly states that Inklings (and by extension Octolings) have oil-based physiologies, not water-based like Humans or (presumably) Jellies.

I thought it would be because of their 'high pressure' ink sacks and lack of bones meaning that the water is too much pressure for the sack to handle. In the clip, the avatar only respawns when their chest touches the water, they are still fine whilst the avatars legs are in the water.

The science short version is that their body can't handle deep body's of water because of the pressure but the water/other drinks are liquids but are not full of pressure because the cans are small so they can drink and in the manga some inklings actually drown not dissolve because of unknown reasons

Duuuuuude! It's not acidity, it's Water Pressure! Their skin is too thin to handle the pressure of being submerged, but is fine when taking a shower. If it was acidity, wading into a pool waist deep would melt their legs, but as we see at 7:30, it doesn't. But if it was water pressure, their skin would hold in shallow water only giving way when the water pressure gets to the breaking point. It makes sense in the lore, in the game, AND in real world science! It's perfect!

Couldn't the little "ghost" that comes out when Inklings are splatted be their actual bodies? Both humanoid and squid form could be a natural defensive capabililty that eventually evolved into a more complex extension of themselves. They also don't develop a proper humanoid form until their teens, and could be because it's simply more complicated to form and manipulate, or because it's not "natural" to them and are just trying to imitate human culture. You know how reading is not entirely natural to humans, yet it becomes an extremely basic, automatic thing once learned? Kinda like that. Both their ink control abilities and the ink itself could be way more complicated than they seem.

but that wouldn't explain solid colission with things and how they can be in a solid shape when they are made of ink and if you say its a material that shapeshifts like oobleck that's debuked becuz i already tested and thrown a bucket of oobleck 5 feet from the ground and it dropped like water or a very weak slime,it doesn't have any conection from the in game lore of the sunken scrolls,an exaple:in one of the sunken scroll it shows a evolution shart from the squids now and the squid kids from splatoon and in the japanese version of splatoon calie,marie,pearl and marine didn't say anything about that water is lethal,really just in the other version of the game it is mentioned of water being lethal, i think he most likely theorys is that inklings can't stay afloat in water and the splat effect is fust for asthetics or that the most of the water is acidic in the time splatoon happens and in resort maps with pools it's the chloride

Because it's not really a ghost, but their physical bodies... That's what the quotation marks are for. Also, I just remembered, when you get splatted in Salmon Run, they appear swimming within the lifesaver, which also supports this idea.

There is also the possibility that the small squid/Octopus is actually just what happens to them when they shrink do to not having any ink in their bodies. So consider it more a long the lines of how Mario shrinks in his 2D adventures. In this form, they can't swim (very well) and either rely on a re-spawn point or a life preserver (Otherwise they'll die.)

Frogs in saltwater do not die due to salt going into their cells, but its the water leaving the frogs cells. The water follows the solute (which in this case is salt)

Through my zoological knowledge, thorough observation & logical reasoning, my theory is that the Inklings (including Octoling) evolved with minor psychokinetic abilities, and as such, their shape-shifting bodies are merely an improvement upon the pseudomorph technique (an inky "Substitution-Jutsu" Squids & Octopi use for escape), telekinetically held to form & piloted like an anime mech-suit made of ink, and their true bodies being the little "ghosties", seen flying away when splatted and/or entering a spawn-point... And so, I believe their inability to swim in water is only a partial limitation; They aren't allowed to swim in Turf Wars (plus it would be difficult anyway, concentrating PK while trying to fight), and outside of that, they just need to put more focus on their pseudomorph construction and they could make it waterproof/maintain form in water allowing them to swim in water (but only in their humanoid form though, since their squid/octo form is straight-up liquid, it's just no use)...

In inkopolis the only time you have your wepon or a wepon is in turfwar/ranked meaning that the remarks about swimming would make sense as the would not have there gear and therefore be weighed down and that would mean they could swim without drowning

Even on the scale you have, it shows lye, which is able to dissolve a human body. Probably, you could use a little more explanation for PH, something like "7 is neutral, and the further from 7 you get, the more hazardous the substance: with low numbers being acids and high numbers being bases". Fun video, though.

also acidity doesn't directly convey how dangerous it is at all. for example hydrogen flouride is a rather weak acid, effecting the PH value of a solution much less than other acids, yet even minute quantities of hydrogen flouride can kill a human whereas a similar concentration of suflouric acid will be unpleasent, but not a thing you'll die from in most cases.

I had always believed in the "hypertonic to water" theory, which plays into the "thin skin" and would allow them to consume water (their organs probably wouldn't have the same problem as the skin). I had my own theory which was when Earth was flooded, you can imagine that having sky scrapers and power plants along with other modern artifacts couldn't have been good for the ocean. When they go in the ocean specifically it hurts them, but anything on land is filtered and shouldn't hurt them. Ocean water basically burns them from high acidity. When they are half submerged, it's like putting your feet into the hot water at a salon. Think about having you feet in then being fully submerged in it. This brings another point that I don't think Inklings explode, but rather they feel so much pain they don't have energy to swim and sink( Notice I saw sink not drown cause I'm pretty sure they can breathe underwater especially in their squid form) Edit: lol Wrote this before watching the video, didn't notice I said almost the exact same thing except for the reason why the ocean is polluted

I just want to add this for lore trivia so it's not much. The Splatoon manga (Coroika for short) shows in a panel that Inkling cannot swim. If you look at the first few pages in chapter 4 (Aloha's battle), Team Blue jumps in a pool and are submerged as a result. The next panel shows them out of the pool all drenched but in itself no worse for wear. I think like Inkling can be submerged or be in touch with water but just can't swim out. Also (maybe for commodity in the game, mixed with lore if possible) 'dying' by water and be sent to the respawn is waaay faster than just halt the entire game (and subsequent games) to wait until someone fishes the fallen player/s out the water, or even risky if the rescuers themselves fall in. That's just it.

My question: Why do woomies explode into the *enemy ink colour?* I mean it makes sense on a gameplay perspective because if you explode into your colour you might kill the enemy with it. But like, do they just get stained enough with colour they turn into that colour?

Perhaps the internal organs of the inklings and octolings that you mentioned, the ink sac, could be the key. It may be more important to their biology than just storing/making the ink. Their bodies may be made largely of ink which allows them to change forms and may explain why their body might look to be flowing and they become the same colour as the ink they are using. The ink sac might also be key in keeping the bodies together rather than “falling apart” or dissolving in water. If the ink sac were to get wet or be effected by a change in pressure (such as being submerged in water) then the body would not be held together and therefore dissolve. It could also explain why it only kills them after the water reaches a certain level on their body, and the desperation in keeping their body out of water (so they keep the sac above, even if the legs and lower body are in it) as well as the delay of the water reaching the organs before their body dissolves. This is more of a rough idea so there is a large chance it doesn’t match the mechanics or lore of the game, and I chose not to try to make it too real-world scientifically accurate to allow for a creative theory since it is a video game after all. Thanks for the interesting video and I hope this was a little thought provoking for an alternative idea. Edit: sorry it was longer than I expected
