He killed her!
In the shocking conclusion to episode three of season 4 of The Chosen, Quintus kills one of the key female characters. But the real question is: Why?
Is he just insane? Is he consumed by Roman bloodlust? Or has there actually been something building for the past few seasons building, in fact, for the past several centuries that led him to this point, and caused him to make this decision?
Well I’m going to answer those questions and more as we dive into this special episode of The Chosen Explained.

I too feel the same way and that`s the brilliance of this, all we have is a small portion in the scriptures in the lives of all these people, even though its about Jesus, its also about the human condition and in this series we see between the lines, which is where the truth lies.

I’m a big fan of The Chosen but people need to remember that the actors are following the script - just because we liked Ramah and we like Gaius does not mean that they were likable characters in actuality (Ramah probably didn’t even exist) - the main purpose of The Chosen is to relay the Truth of God - along the way Dallas is making the main characters interesting and likable but don’t take that and try to read information into the Bible that is not there because of your sympathy for those characters.

@@sitprettybaby8188 , it is "extra-biblical". There is a big difference. Josephus' histories are extra-biblical, meaning that they are outside the bible and contain information beyond the bible. In Josephus' case, it is historical info and commentary. In The Chosen, in this situation in particular, the three characters (Quintus, Gaius, and Rhema) are extra-biblical characters added to enable certain subplots and messages that the writers wish to convey. Rhema (not her Greek name, and that she initially knew little of the Tanakh - yet she understands Jewish customs and is very honoring of her family) is a bit of an enigma. She fits but does not totally fit. Bible readers also know from early on that she is not likely to stay in the story or at least if she does it will be with some very major changes, as Thomas (also a bit of an outsider when compared to most of Jesus' disciples) is never indicated in the gospels to have a wife. So, Rhema is a complex prop added to the story for the purpose of Quintus' dramatic downfall. This series is a fictioonalized account of the Bible which, though holding very close to the gospels, occasionally changes settings and order of events for various reasons including production efficiencies or telling "parables" of their own, similar to The Ten Commandments.

I missed the part where Quintus had a shocking act. It looks like watchers are expecting every word of the script to be straight from the bible. Its a TV show, not a time warp. It is to provoke thought and inspire reading the bible. There are no subtitles on the bottom of the screen that show the chapter and verse.

@@commonsensei0214He was called doubting Thomas because when he was told Jesus had risen from the dead he at first didn't believe that it was true. Jesus had appeared to the other disciples but Thomas had not been there at the time. So he didn't believe, saying unless he puts his fingers in the nail marks on Jesus' hands and feet he would not believe that Jesus was risen. Thomas doubted right until Jesus appeared in the flesh to him. That's why we call him doubting Thomas.

@@edenalexandriab9120 thank you kindly for explaining. I do not know the bible as I should but I'm working on that! I started with Matthew and I'm amazed at how much The Chosen has unpacked from this book alone. It hard for me to imagine that despite all the miracles, healings and teachings that Jesus performed that anyone would doubt him or that he could could have risen. But I have the benefit of a 2000 year perspective. I remind myself that this was all new and very different than anything anyone was used to or knew in that time. Even today, truths are hard to swallow and people will hold on to falsehoods with strict adherence as proof of their convictions rather than open their mind and heart to something that may be different and difficult to accept but ultimately rings true if they allow themselves to consider it.

@@dongato77 We have been watching the Chosen from the beginning. We also read the Bible aloud every Sabbath. We know the Scripture. First it was the issue with Eden's miscarriage. I let that one go because in our lives we do have trials and they never said if Eden called out to Yahuah. Then Little James asked Jesus for healing and He refused- said He thought it was great to watch him heal others- even ones with his same malady. We would just skip that scene. Now they have killed Ramah. I know she is not biblical but they are portraying her as a disciple. In John 18:9 Yahusha says, “I have not lost one of those You have given Me.” but now the Chosen says "oops, except this one". Yahusha healed every single person who came to Him yet the Chosen has chosen to show their Jesus as only denying healing to the ones who follow him. It is blasphemy.

@@jannaswanson271 I see some of your views but Jesus didn't heal everyone, He even mentioned that He would not perform signs and miracles just because He was asked to and even showed reluctance to do so: Matthew 4:1-11, John 2:1-12, Mark 6:1-6, Mark 7:24-30, Matthew 12:38-42, 16:1-4, Luke 23:6-17, Matthew 27:32-44. Now, John 18:9 he is speaking directly about those whom He chose, the 12. I don't have issues with people not liking the Chosen I just like to know why. I have my issues, but I also know that God can use anything and I personally have seen where the series has drawn many closer to God. Lots of biblical studies about why God heals some and not others, see Paul.

@@dongato77 Yes, Yah used pastors that helped draw me back that I now know are false teachers. I also read "Test and prove what pleases the Lord. Have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that is illuminated becomes a light itself." Ephesians 5:10-13 What the Chosen is saying is that Yahusha is not faithful. Like the people today that come to Him for healing that assume that He does not want to heal heal them when they are not healed. The Chosen is confirming this wrong belief. You listed many verses. There is not one that has Yahusha refusing to help anyone- even in His hometown it was because of their unbelief. Are you trying to say that Little James and Ramah did not have faith in Yahusha? Paul was not healed in order to keep him humble and it was explained to him just like that.

Great job on the history/backstory Brandon. There is a further twist that you left out. The Hasmoneans (rulers post the Maccabean revolt) actually invited the Romans in to help Israel finally and thoroughly throw off the Seleucid Greeks. What a blow then later, under Roman occupation, to realize that to a certain degree they did this to themselves.. Interestingly, because of the deep Jewish resistance to the Roman pantheon of gods, and the Roman desire for peace in their regions if possible, the Jews were granted a unique exception in that they were not required to worship Roman gods. The Chosen gets this right. Notice that no Jews are ever shown doing that.

y'all know that the Rema story is fiction. Not in the bible. I am not sure why this is included in the show. It was confusing to have Jesus address this issue in a manner that is not scriptural. What i mean is the scene was disturbing to me ( along with the stoning scene in the temple as that was not what happened - see the book of John) . The scene where Jesus was arguing with the jewish scribes seemed like he was stirring things up in a way that was not his character. He definatley did confront the jewish rulers many times and was very direct with them. BUT with regard to the biblical record, Jesus was very protective of his disciples. He was not careless with them. The Chosen sometimes makes it seem like only the disciples were the ones concerned with thier safetly (security team for Jesus) etc. In the garden of gethsemane, Jesus prayed to the Father, and in his prayer ( john 17) he said to the father that he had taken care of those you were given to him. "not one was lost, except Judas," as that was another thing ( Prophetic). I appreciate Brandons teaching here about the Roman and Jewish conflict as that was real. Jewish people were cruelly treated and killed by the Romans. this is true to history. I think that the story of the roman soldiers ( Gauis and Quintus) is very interesting and good to show. I was confused by Jesus response to Thomas when he (thomas) asked Jesus to do something to bring Rema back, and his response was "its not her time". (again, Jesus never said that, because this story did not happen in the bible - so important to understand that). Typically this is something one says when someonw who is on deaths door does not die and it is miraclous. I suppose that maybe they are setting the story up ( theatrical set up) for another resurrection story ( possibly when Jesus rises from the dead and saints were also raised, as the bible describes), not sure myself. I like this show very much but it is my opinion that they skate on very thin ice sometimes with the gospel narrative. I am still a fan but critical of some of the things they are portraying. And its ok to question the show. At the least it can be a good conversation and drive people to want to know the scriptures. Christians, you need to read and reread the bible. I have had many of my christian friends ask me "where was that schene in the bible" and i have to say to them, it is not in the bible. I am concerned with how this biblical ignorance is affecting people. Good if it draws people to go to the word of God and know it better. That is my hope.

If we are ignorant of the true word of God and rely on fictional stories of Jesus to form our relationship with him, That is a problem. @@TheProdigalsDiary yes I believe the show does bring attention to Jesus. My point to begin with was that there is an ignorance of Gods word among believers and we cannot afford to add to that by getting our understanding of Jesus from the chosen or from each others opinions. I had a good friend of mine who is a christian (and who should be reading the Bible daily because that is a deep part of our relationship with God) not know that the Rhema story was made up. He also said he would take my ork fie it and was not going to go back and read what really happened. My message still is, read the word of God for yourself believers and unbelievers to see what really did I happen because it is not always the same as the show, and that could pose a problem if you take the shows word for it because it’s just easier to watch tv and not seek the Lord yourself.

I really appreciate the range of comments on this post. My own feelings about the Chosen series aren't too much different. The only thing I would add is my concern that when we become wrapped up in movies, lectures, or sermons, we move away from our own personal and intimate relationship with our triune God. When we read the Bible, pray and meditate on the Lord, we have the opportunity to grow closer to God in the way He wants us to grow. When we start to place more credence in someone else's interpretation of what God is saying in the Bible, I'm afraid it moves us a degree further from God's truth. I hope what I am writing makes sense.

The Chosen is the doctrine of demons. First Yahusha let Eden go through a miscarriage but I let that slide because of Job. Then He refused to heal Little James. We would skip that part because is is so horribly out of character. Now they have killed Ramah. Even though she didn't actually exist they are portraying her as a disciple. In John 18:9 Yahusha says, “Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.” This is also a fulfillment of prophecy. Of course we once again have Yahusha refusing to help His own when He heals and helps every other person who comes to Him, refusing no one. This "Jesus" is not the Lord and Savior of the world.

When I was in high school, a friend lost his grandmother and his little brother in a freak car accident. The first responders told my friend's mom that the little brother could possibly be revived. My friends and I spent several hours praying, on our knees with tears in our eyes, that God would restore that little boy to life. But the answer to that prayer was "no." For whatever reason, that was not the Father's Plan. So I understood the lesson of Episode 3, even though it broke my heart. We live in a fallen world, and God works *through* our fallen nature instead of overriding it, because He keeps to the rules He set for Himself. Surely people Jesus knew and cared for died all the time, and He couldn't resurrect them all because the Father willed otherwise. I can empathize with how troubled your kids must be, especially if they're little, but maybe the show will prove a good way of teaching them that sometimes, for some reason we can't understand, it is God's will that people die senselessly, even people who are dear to us. It might be easier to learn this lesson from the show than in real life like I did. God bless 🙏🕊️✝️

Here's my take.. after watching seasons 1 through 3 again, Thomas was very distracted by Rama and I think Jesus picked up on it very early on. He knew that if Thomas was distracted or married, he could not fully commit himself to Jesus and his discipleship. That's why Jesus would not marry them because He knew what was coming. He needed Thomas to be fully committed and prepared for the task at hand.

This whole season was leading up to Christ's teaching of the 'parable of the laborers in the vineyard' in Matt 20. All the characters where in a space where they were trying to find their spot, status and power inside their worlds. The Apostles were at odds with Simon's new position that he did not seek, as senior Apostle and a new name. The sons of thunders' mother were seeking for them a position and power (for the wrong reasons). Yosef was finding himself looking for a position within the Pharisees, Quintus was trying to keep his power and position in the Roman rule only to lose it from his unrighteous acts giving Gaius (who was not seeking the position) his position and title. Martha was jealous with Mary because she was doing all the 'work' while her sister chose to sit learn from Jesus. We learn from Christ's parable that 'the first will be last and the last will be first'. Those who seek for power and position and place themselves (first) are disqualified for the position they desire and will be placed (last) to be chosen. Those who are humble and do not seek for power and position and they place themselves (last) are truly the ones who are best qualified to be called into those positions of leadership and power and will be chosen (first).

@eq1373
@eq1373 5 ай бұрын
Because 1) this covers the time frame of the Gospels only and 2) there are specifics that the Gospels don't address (such as WHY Thomas was doubting and cynical) The whole point is that the stuff depicted that some consider "extra Biblical" is plausible and possible given the time frame and circumstances.

Overall I agree, however, Rome was, in fact, pretty tolerant of other religions within their Empire. Provided, of course, you don't cause trouble because of it. There were Jewish synagogues in Rome, and Jews lived and worked there. The Romans felt them a bit odd, having only one God. But of all the religions within the Roman Empire, only 2 were outlawed, Christians and Druids. Druidic religious practices had human sacrifice as part of their observances, and since, according to Roman Law, only Rome (the State) can execute someone. This is why the Sanhedrin needed to get Pilate to condemn Jesus to death. Likewise, later, Christians were outlawed since they 'ate the flesh and drank the blood of their God'. For the Romans, this surely must have meant someone was being killed to provide this. It didn't help that Christians declared Jesus as King, something the Romans were strongly against. (Ok, essentially there was really no difference between Caesar and a King but the Romans didn't see it that way). Gauls, Germans, and Britons weren't Romanized because of forced worship of the Emperor as a god, but rather because Roman Law was better than living under the whims of a chieftain. It brought commerce, a better life, etc. Let's not forget that the big crisis in Judea, wasn't the imposition of the worship of the Emperor as a god, but when Caligula insisted that a statue of him be placed in the Holy of Holies, implying that he was their one God. Luckily, Roman officials in Judea kept making excuses as to why they hadn't done it. Roma was concerned only with order. We know from the Gospels that Pilate/Rome saw no crime that Jesus committed that would warrant His death. But, in order to keep order due to a threatened riot, Pilate felt forced to let the Sanhedrin have their way.

While a part of me understands why they had Quintus stab Ramah both in universe and out (I think Ramah's actress could have other commitments that would make it harder for future seasons) the way it was done made it a bit problematic. The fact they had Jesus right there and Thomas pleaded with Him to save Ramah makes when He said "No" rather off putting. My mom especially didn't like it because it makes Jesus look ineffective. I don't go that far because I think what was trying to be conveyed is that sometimes God doesn't answer our prayers/requests the way we want. I think it would have been better if Thomas was forced to leave Ramah in the road and later when they join up with Jesus demands they go back to save Ramah. A "No" from Jesus in that instance would make sense because he was not physically present when the stabbling happened and given the turmoil that His Preaching caused He wouldn't want to escalate it even further by appearing so after. Jesus didn't eradicate all sickness and death when He came. He had some limits since He was God and man with physical limits. Besides Jesus' main mission was to save mankind's souls/spirits corrupted by sin and miracles were to demonstrate his power and to break down walls in people's hearts to His true message.

Rome didn't waste time with incompetent emissaries. And most people in Quintus position were very ambitious characters. Quintus is just an ugly character who doesn't want to be stripped of his position of power due to incompetence. It's what happened in real life to Pontius Pilate, the main theory being that he was "fired" not long after Jesus death. Quintus killing a "protester" was probably pretty common. For example, Capernaum was burnt to the ground by Rome due to unrests a few years before Jesus death.

Paul uses his birth in Tarsus as his claim to be a Roman citizen to get him out of a trail by the Jewish Sanhedrin. Paul puts forth his claim that as a Roman he can only be tried by the Caesar. It seems that God's plan to spread the good news uses the strangest of people many times.
