Edgar, I know a violinist in Baltimore the in the early 90’s had a Guarneri del Gesu. I got to hold it a couple times. She picked it up in the late 1980’s it was insured for $750,000 US at the time. I’m guessing it’s worth 10M plus today. I’m guessing she doesn’t play it anymore.

Hello dear man. I want to consult you please. How high should the fingerboard be on a violin? at the end of the handle. On the fingerboard side, if at the end of the fingerboard the height of my fingerboard is 1.9 mm from the face of the violin.?

Hi Edgar, is there any test that can be made to determine the sound quality of a violin? Seems to me that until there is a scientific method to determine violin sound quality, all subjective methods are suspect.

Nope, speaking as a professional violinist myself, you simply cannot completely quantify the sound produced by a high level violin. You can do it at a basic level like analyzing the sound spectrum of a historic model and determin some aspects but beyond that it becomes purely subjective. There're simply too many variables involved. Like who's playing for example. The same instrument might sound great in the hands of one player but not so much when it's played by someone else. That's why it's an art. When it comes to color and tone quality, it's all a matter of personal taste given the person is a skilled musician with a refined enough taste. It's like trying to use science to find out what makes the most beautiful woman. There's no such thing. We can all agree on some things, but beyond that it's a matter of you like it or not.
