Bad ending or not, it will forever remain as one of my favorite shows of all time. The cast, the music, the over-all mood and setting of the show... I adored every second of it. I have yet to find a series that gives me the same feeling and emotional reactions such as this one. There are so few masterly crafted melancholic series out there :(

I just came here after thinking "Damn. I wished I could watch Penny Dreadful again - for the first time." It made me feel so many things, and really put a time stamp on a small chapter in my life. Of course I can still find it to rewatch, but I can't have that element of discovery and revelation again, you know? I wished it would have gone on; at the same time, I'm a little glad it didn't ever outlive itself. This intricate intensity couldn't have lasted for ten seasons.

BUT it's been too long since the last season and the actors are likely busy working on other projects. Netflix could start a new Victorian horror show since it does tv so well.

They continue Vanessa's story in the season 4 comic. It concludes everything alot more. Vanessa definitely doesn't die, if anything she becomes reborn as the mother if darkness, sadly. Its a good conclusion tho. Most fans of the show would appreciate it

Eva Green was absolutely incredible in that show. Her acting was spectacular, especially the asylum scenes that were just brutal!! Also how she could go from looking gorgeous to quite disturbing was wild to watch. Loved the whole thing...a unique TV show,well worth watching.

Frankenstein and Malcolm also never learned Ethan was a werewolf nor vice versa did the group know Victor could reanimate the dead; that was a total bummer for me. Ethanessa was also being purposely set up to be a thing since that first episode when Ethan pulled the "lovers" tarot card not to mention he was destined TO BE HER PROTECTOR! Underutilized Dorian was just floating around to be a sex maniac when he is also supposed to be a great warrior [swordsman] and should've been integrated into Ives's core group. Crazy bitch Lily stayed alive. Hecate f**ked Ethan literally and it was disgusting since that woman tried to kill his friends and Vanessa. And the final let down for me besides the horrible casting of Dracula and Jekyl/Hyde was Frankenstein never getting closure with his monster. You knew that was being set up since season 1 and their story went NO WHERE! So no I don't buy any of this "it was foretold" garbage not when they're still milking the series through the comics. JL screwed up so bad he can't even face the PD fans so what does that tell you?? It was just a slap in the face to the audience.

One of the reasons I don't buy that it was supposed to end like this. Is the fact that a few major plot point was set up & never fulfilled. EXAMPLE - Ethan never actually discovered that Brona was brought back to life by Frankenstein. You know that was coming.

I'm not buying it was planned to end when it did. Why would you introduce Dr. Jekyll and Catriona and then do nothing with their characters. The ending felt rushed, anti climatic, and unresolved for most of the characters.

I genuinely believe it was meant to be a shorter season run, but maybe 5 seasons and certainly not 3. What they are saying is just spin to try and counter the fallout. Too much was left hanging and unfulfilled. Most shows aim to go on as long as possible and Babylon 5 is the only show I can think of that had a definite ending (5 seasons) planned right from the start. Supernatural sort of did with Kripke's 5 year plan, but a new showrunner continued after him so that doesn't count.

It should be roughly 50/50, because, you know, the population and all... Instead there are still way more male leads. Not really, you see she had been fighting her whole life, when it came to this last battle she just didn't have anymore in her. She did hope that Ethan would come back and free her through causing her to die with his guns teeth or claws. She had been worn down mentally by her ordeal with both satan and dracula. One of them was bound to get her, and it just happened to be Dracula because he has memorizing powers Satan does not have.

Name dropped Imhotep (Season 4?), Catriona could've been an amazing addition instead of just girl with knives, and you don't introduce Jekyll without ever showing Hyde!! You just don't! The ending was so abrupt and felt totally rushed and like a last minute decision. If Vanessa was so important then why was she featured for like two minutes in the series' finale episode. I do not believe this explanation at all. Why set up Dr. Hyde for an entire season not to reveal Mr. Jekyll. It does not make sense...I will concur it was declining viewership and production cost, but I don't buy this is how it was suppose to end from day one.

i'm still wondering why Ethan as the Wolf of God was supposed to be the chosen one who rescues Vanessa...when all he did was kill her? Like someone else could have done that too and give her inner peace? For example Malcolm or Dr. Frankenstein...I really don't get why they should have built up the story arc around the Wolf of God as Vanessa's rescue if all they let him do was to just kill her?

John Logan is full of shit when he says PD was "intended to go for 3 years exactly." If that was true, he wouldn't have been introducing new characters, like Dr. Jeckyll, whose storylines went nowhere, and he wouldn't have sent Ferdinand Lyle to Egypt. Why, on earth, would a show be cancelled if two guys got it on? We're not still catering to the heterosexual male mentality are we? God I hope not. There were several scenes. I am old and intelligent enough to understand that sometimes, even great things in life will not get enough support to remain constant. We all are... What I find appalling is that going into season 3, there was no way to know that it was ending. If anything, I felt they could flesh it out for at least 2 more seasons. What is even worse is that SHOWTIME thinks fans are foolish enough to believe that this ending was intended; that the fantastic writer John Logan with his cast and his crew, after putting so much time and effort into building some of the greatest, meatiest characters of all time, would just abruptly end it in such a manner. It was the perfect and unique blend of theater arts and film, a true masterpiece in every way. How are we to accept that this was what they had planned? It's hard to watch shows like The Flash, The Arrow, Game of Thrones and even The Walking Dead, after watching something this dense... I just watched the "final" episode, and I have never been more upset about any show... I had to vent by going on a 6 mile run; just to try and get it out of my system. It's truly appalling that the best show in history (that I have watched), with my favorite, Eva Green, and the remarkable performances by every single cast member, should have its legacy stained like this. But I feared this would happen, for as great as this show is, it's for a very small population. This show taught me to live with my demons; to embrace them while keeping them at arms reach...

If it was already planned to end after just nine episodes of season three, then why did they introduce new characters like dr. jekyll, dracula and that red-haired woman?? (sorry, forgot her name. I didn't like her cause in my opinion she doesn't fit the time that penny dreadful takes place) They even started a whole new and big side plot with lily/brona trying to start a revolution to fight for women's rights just to suddenly ending it without the depth you would expect from previous penny dreadful episodes. It was so frustrating to watch that last episode and I also missed Vanessa Ives a lot during season three (Eva Green deserves an Oscar!!). I'm really upset :(

I was mad when I found out it was ending, but from what I understand the creator couldn't keep writing Vanessa's storyline (at least that's the way the articles made it seem when the news first broke). He said that he knew it would have to end with her either choosing her faith or losing it (and herself) altogether, and he said that he couldn't drag her through another season as her character couldn't keep being put in these horrible situations. I don't know if that's all true; I'd rather it be for another reason mentioned than just you couldn't be more creative with story writing :/

Couldn't agree more. Logan was quoted a couple of years ago saying he had no idea how the show would unfold or how long the story would take to tell. I understand he's still under contract with Showtime, so I suppose I understand why he placed the blame for the sudden end on himself, but I can't forgive how it ended -- or how the ending was characterized. "Triumphant" for Vanessa? Really? If getting shot by Ethan was a "triumph," I don't understand why they didn't have him do it in S1E9, when Vanessa begged him to shoot her to put an end to her misery (she was enduring a demonic possession at the time, which had to have been at least as bad as being married to Drac). I would have been happier if (a) they would have foretold the series ending and (b) they'd come up with something that was actually "triumphant" -- even if that meant Vanessa actually becoming the so-called "Mother of Evil" and ending the series with an unexpected twist. As it was, it was just kind of a drag.

Not buying it. For one thing, Hartnett was quoted as saying he'd been pitched a series that was around 6-7 years, not 3. Second, it's obvious that there was a big chunk of story ripped out of the middle of season 3 (or to put it another way, it was obvious that the ending, whether planned or not, had been hacked off a longer series and stuck to the end of the third season). There were just too many inconsistencies, sudden changes of character, not to mention the unexplained disappearance of whole plot threads. And lastly, there were too many "explanations" coming from Logan for why it ended the way it did, before he settled on "it was always planned" - It was the network, Eva Greene couldn't hack it anymore, Logan couldn't take watching her suffer, the money ran out, etc., etc. Now suddenly it's "haha, it was never going to go longer"? Nope, sorry. Not buying it.

The show was characterised by utterly brilliant seasons leading up to appealingly weak, throwaway finales. It's been one of my top two favourite shows in recent years but I have never been so disappointed in a final episode. It has really soured my view of the whole series to the extent that i doubt I will ever watch it again. Not that Vanessa died, but that she died in such a pathetic, feeble manner which was completely at odds with the previous three seasons. And not to mention the multitude of dead-end storylines it left.

Recently watched the show on Netflix after wanting to watch it since I first heard about it but not having Showtime. It was bloody brilliant for such a long while, but that finale was so... anti-climactic and disappointing. Such a shame. I thought they could have had so much going for it. And with the show not even coming back, it can't be made right again. Although if by some miracle it pulled a Buffy and made a series of comics as a canonical continuation, I would read the shit out of that. But assuming that won't happen, should I ever rewatch the show, I'm just stopping after the end of season 2.

That was how a different show that I liked ended too. The ending was cut from somewhere further ahead and tacked on the last episode. Characters were introduced, only to not see screen time again, and the ending was hurriedly thrown together. The things you mentioned happened to my favorite show also, which made me believe both series were to run longer, but, they were both canceled too quickly.

Once Lilly Frankenstein got in touch with her former life as Broda Croft, it would have been interesting for Ethan and Lilly/Broda's paths to cross again. Would she draw on how he held her during her final moments and try to comfort Ethan in his loss of Vanessa. Would a love triangle form between Dr Frankenstein, Ethan Chandler and Lilly/Broda? Would Lilly/Broda join Ethan to track down Dracula and use her superhuman strength to help Ethan with his wolf on to finish Dracula. Would Dorian get his comeuppance when one of the characters destroyed his portrait. I liked all three seasons.

For those reasons I call bullshit on the producer's claim that only 3 seasons were planned!

The ending was still shit. Way too many loose ends, too many things left unsaid and unexplained, literally everyone on that show deserved a better ending. I feel like there was more being set up, but the show got cancelled and they had to rush the ending. Even with Vanessa's death, I think there was plenty of material for at least one more season. If only just to wrap up everyone else's stories. Just because Vanessa died doesn't mean everyone else should cease to exist. I'm mostly pissed about how Ethan never found out what really happened to Brona.

Penny Dreadful Season 3 was completely dissapointing...first, worst casting decision ever with Christian Camargo as Dracula and his daylight alter ego, "Dr. Sweet", WTF is that ??? Bram Stoker should sue them !!!...second, Dr. Jekyll but NO Mr. Hyde is totally nonsense...third, most of the action moved to the Far Wild West (Ethan Chandler / Wolfman), the main attractive of this series at least for me, was victorian London, not cowboys !!!...four, not fully explained characters like Catriona, the vampire hunter...five, the only one time shown portrait of baby face - Dorian Gray, such a way to waste a masterpiece gothic character !!!...six, Dr. Victor Frankenstein, another wasted character...something good about Season 3?...Patty Lupone as a female version of Dr. Seward was an interesting and bold movement but of course, not even as spectacular as her performance of witch Joan Clayton in Season 2 !!!...Josh Harnett, Eva Green, Timothy Dalton and Rory Kinear were great as usual as Ethan Chandler, Vanessa Ives, Sir Malcolm Murray and Mr. Clare...I´m deeply sorry that this incredible series with great Season 1 and superb Season 2 have come to a rushed end after an incomprehensible Season 3...

Well said. I did think it was wrong to put so much story around the trip to the US west and that story line. I so wanted it to go back to London. Maybe they thought they had plenty more time (not just 3 seasons) and it justified the time. When a series miss steps, it won't come back, so it doesn't feel like a proper closure. I think people being upset about the ending might have had more to do with the fact that it ended. The ending was beautiful and perfect to me. It just hurt that it was over. The monster reciting the William Wordsworth poem while he buried his young son at sea and then moments later him saying goodbye to Vanessa Ives, the only person to have truly been kind to him. It just ended so abruptly and without warning.

I just finished this on Netflix, and regardless of how abrupt the ending of the show was, I feel it was the ending Vanessa deserved. The way this show had built up its demons, there was no way she'd find peace outside of death, and that was pretty clear to me after her possession in the first season. I didn't expect her to die, but it wasn't something I ruled out because her alive is what our antagonists wanted, and it was clear they'd never stop torturing her or her companions until either one of the brothers had her. Additionally, Heaven exists in this universe, and right before Vanessa died, she expressed that she saw God which implies she went to Heaven, right? So she isn't suffering. And Ethan, Victor, and Malcom surely would join her when they died. So regarding their separation, it's not as if they'd never see each other again. I find the ending to be sad, but aside from the final season being so short, I'm not disappointed. Yeah, there were other characters and side plots, but we didn't see enough of Jekyll to be too angry about that, I'm pretty okay with not knowing what happened to Lily, and I found Dorian's final scene to be very poetic. We can imply that Victor, Ethan and Malcom stayed close to each other, and as for John (the Creature), I can see him living a lonely, tired eternity. Or maybe he went back to Victor? Maybe even asked Victor to end his undead existence, finally give his soul some rest. He'd fine Vanessa again! And he wouldn't be alone. *sighs* It's unfortunate that we'll never know about the rest of them, but regarding Vanessa's end, it was the right way to end the show. At least, I believe so, although I am very sad about it.

I really love penny dreadful. They created a different world. I like the story line and what it is about, the whole prophecy of how there was two brothers that fell from heaven, one on the earth and one below and Ms. Ives being the whole key of destruction. (The mother of evil). As in season one they had me on my toes as to what is haunting her, by both brothers and in season two it was the devil and in season 3 Dracula. Season one was like a summary and then the story went more in depth with each season. I also like how the other characters played an important role but was not main characters, which made it very interesting. Seriously this is one of the best series I've ever watched, I started watching it for the third time and still it catches me every time.

I finally got to watch this series. We cannot afford a Showtime subscription so I waited to purchase it on Prime. I love the show and it was do well done with one of the best casts to be found. One of the best post Victorian era shows to air on TV; a truly remarkable show with great storylines, great cast and great performances from each character. It was absolute pleasure watching Penny Dreadful in 2020, I know better late than never. Like many people, I am glad I had a glimpse on how old times was back then. Just to give you a heads up the last episode was really poorly scripted and was rushed throughout. It should had been a two hours long show with more fights scenes anyways I will still rate it 9/10 !

I heard the show was cancelled due to competition with Preacher on AMC which just came on, I knew that didn't make sense because for one, most people including myself don't watch non cable stuff when it's first aired because of commercials. To remove commercials from my life I record the show instead of even watching demand, because even Demand has gotten into this ugly habit of making you watch the commercials, and not allowing you to fast forward, and if you take too long it starts again. This explanation makes more sense, a shame because I had finally started watching this a few months ago, but it's so good I plan to watch it until the end. This show did in 3 seasons what many shows have failed to do in 7 (I'm talking to you True Blood, which should've been cancelled at the end of season 5 as soon as Alan Ball left). I like the trend of cancelling a show if it's come to a conclusion, rather than running it into the ground, or jumping the shark.
