What McCarthy needs to teach Trey Lance: 1) How to read a defense, 2) How to go through your progressions . . . It amazes me how college quarterbacks don't know how to do this . . . one of the reasons Aaron Rodgers has a quick release, is that he does a lot of the mental work Pre-Snap . . . while Purdy doesn't have Trey Lance's arm, you can see that he "processes" much faster than Trey Lance
@donnahaddad6672

Trey reads defenses and goes through progressions just fine. Those are old worn out false narratives. Purdy goes through progressions quickly because Shanahan schemes up simple throws that don't require a lot of thought.

@donnahaddad6672 why didn't ge do that for T. Lance? Lance doesn't know how to read defenses yet, that's why his TD pass should have been intercepted. He's late to throws or he stares down receivers. The kid has a ton of talent but does he have what it takes between the ears. So far he hasn't shown he does. Maybe that will change given more time to develop.

I think Coach Mac should use Lance sporadically. Use him in an RPO role, since he’s really quick for a QB, once he gets his long legs on track. I 100% agree with you on this! I noticed the same exact thing when they started putting Lance in all the plays were weird they had all kinds of designed runs none of it made sense to me. Then you have pretty in there and they let him dink-and-dunk and let people do stuff after the catch. It was very strange my current theory is that Shanahan's ego is way too big and he tries to develop quarterbacks through pressure and through breaking them down somehow instead of building them up. A Young quarterback needs to be taught needs to be nurtured needs to be built up needs to get his confidence strong not to be harped on for every type of mistake and every situation where they fail. Failure is normal at this stage of development. I don't think Shanahan tolerates failure. Has a horrible combination. And for anyone who's going to respond to my comment that failure is unacceptable at the NFL level you would be one hundred percent wrong! Go look at Peyton Manning's rookie year, Drew Brees rookie year, Troy Aikman rookie year, John Elway etcetera etc etc. Failure is completely normal while the quarterback is developing. It's expected! And a coach needs to know how to build that person up in the utilize what that person has. Not by random design runs right up the middle to get the quarterback injured

Excellent as usual. Yes you laid out the game plan for him. Get him a simple set up for passing options, let him run, and depend heavily on the run game. Put him into positions he is comfortable with that give him options. Center the the team around him so he can function in that capacity. This is very attainable and it can save the Cowboys years of mediocrity, to continue on with the current team. He has big upside hopefully it pans out for him.

Damn guys, hearing alot of hate on this trade. San Fran had got to see something good about him for them to give up 3 first round picks to move up and draft him. They had to have watched some serious college game film on him to do this. It's not like they woke up draft day not knowing anything about him and giving up 3 #1's to get him. IMHO it was a good read but Trey Lance thru the ball late, if he thrown it here at 6:41 it’s a touchdown. He took about 4 more steps before he thru it. What happen to Trey Lance in San Francisco is a loss of confidence and it clearly shows in that play. He digressed from his play against Houston Texans. He started the last drives against Denver this preseason shaky, but he started to gain a confidence which lead to a touchdown to Cameron Latu who had been dropping balls all training camp. He then led a impressive drive which led to a game winning field goal (Yes 2nd & 3rd stringers). It will be interesting to see how McCarthy builds him back up if he can. Not expecting anything until next year.

He has to prove that he has the acumen to understand the nuances of the offense we have. He needs to learn to read beyond his first read. He hasn't played..... He needs to sit and learn. One other thing that I disagree with is that I don't believe that Shannahan EVER designed the offense around him. Shannahan has a track record of favoring pocket passers. Lastly, the Cowboys took a low risk chance on a high talent player. But he isn't in the conversation of competing with Dak. He has to be at our Cooper Rush first. Why would the Cowboys get rid of a proven backup for a dude that has only played a total of 5 games in the last 3 years and 23 games in 5 years? He hasn't played enough football. Contrast that with Dak after 3 years of college and two years of pro. Dak played 69 games. This is a project. One that won't be ready in two years to overcome Dak Prescott. If he can't beat Cooper Rush, then he isn't the QB of the future.

A smart NFL franchise owner and his coach will use the quarterback's skills and build a good offense around those skills to make him as successful as possible including a decent defense to keep the opponents from putting too many points on the scoreboard. What happens in Jed York's mind is to find another Joe Montana and if that quarterback cannot be molded to the way his coaches want him to play, then he goes looking for another Joe Montana. The Yorks and Jed have no idea how to use one good quarterback and his skills to build a good offense around his skills to make him as successful as possible. Even Bill Walsh, though a great coach, was forcing Joe Montana to play as his robot. Fortunately Joe did what he wanted until Joe figured out how to win games without being his robot. In other words, Joe Montana was very intelligent and had lots of playing time by the time Bill Walsh retired so he really didn't need a coach anymore telling him how to play. I see Trey Lance in the same way I saw Joe Montana during his career as a 49er NFL franchise quarterback who learned from his experiences beyond what any coach sitting on the sidelines could ever understand. However, Eddie DeBartolo Jr. understood Joe and wanted him to replace Steve Young who took over the team while Joe was healing from that elbow surgery for almost 2 years. Eddie was the only one who wanted him back in the starting position after he was ready to play again.

@@merezaaz4267 Look this was nothing more than a PR stunt from Jerry. The only thing this trade does is keep a player that could be on the field off of the roster and taking up a roster spot. Dak is on the books for a 60 million cap hit next year, so of course the Cowboys are going to extend Dak for at least another two years. That means Dak will be playing through 2026. They aren’t going to sign Lance’s 5th year option for 25 million and so he’ll be here through 2024 and they won’t resign him for anything close to what he’ll want after his contract expires. So the Cowboys will either trade him or cut him. This whole thing smells like the Steve Walsh deal. Cowboys surprised everybody by selecting Walsh with the second overall pick in the NFL Supplemental Draft, even though they had already selected Troy Aikman number one overall in the 1989 draft. Walsh went on to be a starter to what team after he was traded by the Cowboys? New Orleans for 3 years before they cut him…

Trey has fewer pass attempts in his college+NFL career than Dak has in a single season(most seasons of his career even going back through college), he's a QB toddler, dude still needs to prove that he can even beat out Cooper Rush for QB2 before we can talk about anything else. To talk about him being Dak's replacement, ESPECIALLY by the end of Dak's next extension, is some REAL over the top optimism. I mean, it would be cool if he literally went from insanely inexperienced to better-than-Dak in 3-4 years of scout team action or whatever... but that's probably some real wishful thinking. You know what he can develop into in 3-4 years though? A legit QB who can prove his competence in preseason(and any other opportunities he might get), and raise his value enough for a desperate team in the league to throw a 2nd at him or something of the sort. After all, if he's supposed to be getting as good as Dak in this time... LOL

He hasn't had as many pass attempts in his college+NFL careers as Dak has in 1 season(including last season). Can we please stop being childish about this?

Who cares. He doesn’t have to. Lance is the 3rd strong QB and might be able to start in 2 years. He’s not a guy to compete with Dak for QB 1

Nobody cares what Dak thinks, it’s McCarthy that should have had input.

Lance ran a ton of QB Power in college. Maybe that’s why Kyle wanted Trey running those type of plays. Not being sarcastic. Also, KS runs a lot IZ n WZ working in concert with PA and boots. I personally don’t think KS used Lance improperly. I believe that they thought Lance was the guy to have them be more dynamic at that positionbut, seeing him in practice and even with this latest preseason snaps, it’s clear he just does not see the field, even with easy 1,2,3 progressions. Do love your videos and agree with you a lot.
