It is inevitable that strong creative personalities passionately involved in making music are bound to clash sooner later because musicians are not clones of each other who behave like conformist, docile sheep. Well, maybe if they sing in a choir or play in a military marching band or something. But, even there, it takes choir or military band leaders a lot of effort to get all the choir voices conforming, behaving right for their vocal parts etc or the band instruments all in perfect time and harmonious etc. It's just that in rock or pop etc bands, there is less order, control, discipline. The atmosphere is much more casual, relaxed and there is seldom a strict rehearsal plan and schedule being barked out by the leader that all must follow as directed. Band members are freer to do and say what they feel. Sometimes they are not feeling very positive, especially after too many late night shows, touring long distances in rotten accommodation and transport, no money or doing excessive amounts of drugs and alcohol, with little access to healthy food or even basic sleep and rest to cope with the loneliness, misery and sheer discomfort of it all. I had a good female blues singer friend who once aptly described her musical career as ' constant storage and removals work at about 2 AM, in your luminous showy stage gear, with the chance to sing the occasional song in between'. I suggested that a woman could just settle down, find a husband and do more singing and of the removals and storage aspect. She replied Yeah.. I know... I used to have a man and a home... Now I don't. That's why a;l I now live for is the chance to sing a song, in between all this removals and storage... One night, somewhere between travelling between Victoria and Sydney our van rolled into a creek in the moonlight and we lost all our gear we tried to fish out, like drowned cold rats in the moonlight. So romantic, so 'hot and sexy'. But, we just burst into song, to avoid going on a killing spree, in utter despair or suiciding there and then. They had no performing gear left that worked and could not afford to buy more or repair it. But they still kept on performing, with anything they could borrow from friends who bought instruments for their kids, who never played them or whatever they could improvise as instruments, from anything they found, around the house, in old junk shops, in nature.

I heard that Queensryche broke up specifically because their manager said "No, for real, Uncle Tupelo is a very important band, and they're gonna open for you", then Geoff Tate screamed so loud it strained his voice, and that pissed the rest of the band off.

And not just normal, ordinary run of the mill personality types. Most will have big ego. You need it just to have the nerve to get up on a stage and strut your stuff but, in some cases it can get out of hand and border on Narcissism. If you are going to make any impression at all on an audience, you need a strong personality and presence. But some workmates eg band members may envy you being centre stage eg if you are the lead singer, drummer or a brilliant lead guitarist or a loud, attention grabbing solo instrument player eg sax, trumpet etc. I've seen a few fights between these more dominant performers and the rest eg singers who hate the way some bits are played by musicians, musicians who get annoyed at singers prancing around doing their own thing, ignoring musicians, even inventing new song lines spontaneously as they perform, expecting musicians to read their creative thought processes like some kind of emotional telepathy or something. I once saw an angry ballet master do a few cat like moves, mutter a few words in French, as all ballet step instructions are given in French, shout 'Got it? Then just shut up and do it !" They had no idea what he wanted done, because he'd only done some weird gestures with his hands and head and then he yelled " What's wrong with you lot?! And said ' Put of my sight! You all look like a herd of cows, your 'attitude' looks like a dog cocking it's leg up to urinate against a tree... " He then made a blowing gesture, as if blowing out birthday cake candles and said ' I'm sick of you all. I need to see something inspiring..." They quickly picked up that cue and all vanished like feathers in a storm. And he just was left standing there, in his foul mood, wondering what the hell was wrong with these dancers, after he put in so much work trying to make them perfect...Eventually, being as addicted to dance as he was, they returned and there was a very uncomfortable atmosphere but he just barked out his orders, refrained from showing his anger and disgust when moves and poses etc were not executed to his liking and they all just did as they were told and, eventually, it was all forgotten and they all agreed that he was the best dance master and which dancers were star performers, which ones were ones who could always be in perfect sync with the rest, despite not being 'the star', just great dancers to dance with.

Yeah, from what I’ve read, Hanley and Frey thought of themselves as “The Eagles” and everyone else was disposable. I love their music but don’t care much for those 2. They treated the other members of the band quite bad. I felt bad for Joe Walsh. He just wanted to make music but Henley and Frey seemed to try and put the screws to Walsh whenever they could.

One incident didn't break up the Eagles. If you asked any of those guys they would tell you four things: 1) The pressure to follow-up "Hotel California," one of the 5 greatest records ever made when the band were already studio perfectionists. Bob Seger, the band's friend, said this was by far and away the biggest factor in the break-up 2) The fact that Henley and Frey weren't getting along (that was far bigger than Felder and Frey not getting along) made songwriting ridiculously difficult 3) They never took a break. They worked continuously from formation until the end of the tour for "The Long Run" 4) Cocaine
@TombstoneHeart
@TombstoneHeart 5 жыл бұрын
I used to work with a bloke who had played in bands in Melbourne and one day he told me of the main reason that so many bands have one successful record and then break up. He said that a lot of bands start out as groups of friends, who form a band, get some work and in most cases, hit the road. He said that for a lot of them, by the time they have had some success, they have been working so hard, they're exhausted; they have spent so much time living in each other's pockets, that they can't stand each other and the thought of more touring just looks like more of a nightmare than a dream come true. So they just disband and are never heard of again.

The Eagles lost Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner, both integral members, both allegedly related to infighting with Glen Frey (RIP), but Felder is the only one mentioned? And that was after they reformed, after the initial 10+ year hiatus. All available video and written evidence have shown me that while Glen Frey was a very talented singer-songwriter, and important to the Eagles success, he appeared to be a big jerk personally, as far as the band was concerned.

The Clash broke up because first Topper Headon was a heroin addict and got kicked out of the band. They replaced him with Terry Grimes who they knew but didn't personally like. Mick became impossible to work with or as Joe Strummer put it "like Elizabeth Taylor in a filthy mood" and got kicked out the band. At that point it wasn't really The Clash anymore and they called it quits. There was a plan for them to reunite at the Hall of Fame induction but Joe passed away before that happened.

@Morphstock

Joe later said that manager Bernie Rhodes had persuaded him to sack Mick, and he'd later realised it was a mistake. They didn't call it quits, they just should have. They formed a new line up which toured in 1984 and released the terrible Cut The Crap album in 1985, which Strummer lost interest in halfway through and Simonon didn't even contribute to, so officially The Clash ended in 1986.

There's a LOT more to the Clash breakup story than just getting sick of each other. Initially it started in 1983 when they fired Topper Headon for massive drug problems, then later that year fired Mick Jones for 'creative differences' (Jones went and formed Big Audio Dynamite later the same day he was fired). They tried keeping going with new members and original manager Bernie Rhodes made them try and go back to being old-school punks, but the album they made together (ironically called Cut The Crap) was an absolute trainwreck and Joe Strummer gave up on the band soon after. In most retrospectives (including the Westway to the World film) the band don't even mention that last period, and make out like the just sorta ended in 1983.

That's an understatement! The funny thing is that they fired him for while, but Joe forced the band to bring him back. Lots of poor decision-making on Joe's part!

They just totally glossed over the breakup of the eagles. As far as what was said here, both Glen and Felder said what they said. Glenn first, because he insisted they all go to support this politician, after a long exhausting tour, and Felder wasn't into politics, so Glenn got furious about it. Both of them have been honest and said the same story on that. But the reason the Eagles broke up, is because Glen quit after that. And when they reformed in the nineties, he insisted all band members except for him and Henley be paid as sidemen, not equal partners as originally. Joe and Tim accepted it, but Felder did not, so he was fired. After 1980, the eagles never were a group again. And they would not have been in the Hall of fame if Don Felder had not written the music for Hotel California, that Glenn and Henley put words to.

As far as the Eagles as concerned everybody forgets that you can't "sex and drugs and Rock n Roll" for years and still have everyone in the band remain mentally stable and buddy buddy's - it's just not realistic. And then there's the elephant in the room - MONEY. When some members decide they are the "creative genius's" and the others in the band just sidemen - well that's when the lawyers get involved. Loved the music but some of the personalities were flawed to say the least.

I think that if a group is together for a while, and play out and write songs, for a few years, at least, and can make enough money to live on - BEFORE becoming famous - then they stand a chance of staying together. The success trip causes big changes that people playing for the wrong reasons aren't always able to take in stride. This is why I love to read about older musicians who get back together, or have never really stopped playing.

In terms of songwriting? And which songs EXACTLY did Everly Brothers composed?? .. ''Far better'' than Noel Gallagher as a composer is Paul McCartney. And Noel is ''far better'' composer than say like Bono. But Everly Brothers composed maybe 2-3 songs, and neither of them was of their classics.

I thought the Everlys broke up because one was having an affair with the other's wife. I'm astounded that there was no mention of...a certain British band that broke up over a mix of creative differences and a long-disputed 40/40/10/10 royalty split (clue: bizarre oriental vibrating palm death?)

The only thing more pathetic than a successful band angrily breaking up is when they come slouching back years later for a "reunion tour." Probably best the Beatles never had the chance... although them taking up Saturday Night Live's $5,000 reunion offer would have been hilarious.
