The NBA's Eastern Conference has been much worse than the Western Conference as a whole. It's no secret. The East has actually been terrible for the majority of the last 20 years, but why is this the case? In this video, I talk about why the East has been really bad for the last two decades.
I make all kinds of NBA videos which include trivia, player stories, rankings, conspiracies, mysteries, and 'What If' videos. Make sure to leave a like and subscribe if you enjoyed this video!

As a conference, the Western playoff teams, won 44 more games than the East. Every team in the west, except the 8th seed (who tied), had a better record than their Eastern Counterpart... That doesn't equate to better in my book.

Sure, but championships matter. In the '10s the East and West split evenly the championships. Sure you can say it was Lebron going to the finals every single year, but it's not like Boston in '11 and the Pacers in '12-'13 were bad. You could turn around and point at the Lakers and Spurs who won all the West championships in the '00s. In fact, if Boston hadn't been robbed of that game 6 against Miami (flagrant foul against Rondo was a no-call) they probably would have beaten that dysfunctional Thunder team.

@@1vaultdweller The EC was loaded during MJ's era. It was more top heavy in the 80's with the Celtics especially. Also the Sixers in the early part of the decade and Pistons later. But in the 90's you had a deeper pool of talent. It was incredible to watch.

@@lainiwakura4678 No it wasnt. From 90 and 98 between 40 All-NBA first selections only 5 of them played for East besides Bulls players. From 90 and 97 the league average points per game went down by -10. The talent pool was so bad NBA had to take steps and shorten the 3 point line.
@lainiwakura4678
@lainiwakura4678 4 жыл бұрын
@@1vaultdweller They shortened the 3 pt. line hoping it would create more offense. That's what the league has been trying to promote for a long time now, to its detriment imo. But you act as if the game was in a bad place. In fact it was booming like never before in the 90's and grown into a global sport. Magic & Larry saved the league from bankruptcy and then Mike blew the lid off. And oh btw they moved the line back the next season as it proved to be a failed experiment. The 2nd half of the decade the talent did dilute, and then got worse in the 2000's. Now that was a weak era. The OG's from the 80's and 90's left and imaginative basketball went with them. And devolved into iso "hero ball" by a new generation of athlete, like AI. The same type of ball they played in the 70's when the league was dying. The best era was 80-93, after the Dream Team and MJ's first 3peat. And the EC was clearly better, deeper, and were dominating the rings for a reason. 1st team selections is a very myopic criteria to judge by. It was obvious to anyone alive to see it for themselves what the better Conference was.

Basically, it all boils down to the big man and style of play. Going back before the league was dominated by point guards, it was a big mans game. The west had all the big men while the east had all the guards(look at 2001 NBA Allstar game for reference). It's easier to build a contending team around a big than a guard. As far as style of play, the west was historically a "run and gun", finesse, offensive type of style, while the east was rugged, hard nose, defensive minded. Because of this, teams from both conferences reflected that. Eastern teams felt if they had a guard and defense, they had a shot. But once that guard gets hurt or leaves, the team suffers. A great example of this is the 2001 NBA Finals. The Lakers had not only Kobe but Shaq and a great team around him. The East had AI and that's it. It's been like that ever since. Nowadays, the west with an already better team are adding one or two superstars from the east, not only making them seem impossible to beat, but they're killing a conference in doing so. The remaining superstars left in the east feel either A: join a loaded team or B: team up with other superstars and create one.

In the 90's, the conferences were different in those terms..West: Offensive minded, run-n-gun, 100-120 points games, track meet style, hardly any defense. East: Defensive minded, slow tempo, Under 100-80 point games..sometimes 80-60, use all 24 sec to get a shot off plus make em play 24 sec of defense.

This is pretty simple when you think about it. In the 90s all the good players left the east so they didn't have to face MJ. Then they started coming back slowly, then Lebron showed up so everyone started leaving again. And if a guy like Ben Simmons, Giannis, Michael Porter, Markelle Fultz, etc becomes the next dominant player everyone avoids ends up in the east will get even worst.

I like the video. The one thing most videos fail to include is the lack of management in the East. They draft stars and then trade them away for nothing rather than to let them mature. One thing someone mentioned is the West Coast life and cities are much more relaxed. In the East , there may be a lot of pressure from media and fans to do something now, now , now. Notice how the west teams just rebuild by, draft , FA , etc And then emerge ?Seems like the East teams don't have the patience to do the same. 76ers have been an example but the injuries to their guys have been rough.

Andy Hoops - I have been involved in basketball a good part of my life as both a high school and college player and coach and I must say your analysis is spot on! I've been a strong advocate of taking 3 or 4 of the strong teams from the West and shifting them to the Eastern Conference in order to create more balance and healthy competition for the overall good of the game. After all, their are at least 7 or more teams in the West that are as good as or better than the top 2 teams in the East. But, alas, I'm afraid it will never come to pass.

Andy Hoops, you make some good points with this video, but I'd like to add a couple of points to the discussion: 1) Prior to the advent of social media, marquee free agents got the most exposure by going to larger media markets. This greater exposure would lead to increasing the awareness of these players' brands. Today, players don't have to go to a market like New York because they are able to get their brands out to the masses through social media and the internet. Furthermore, the market that a player plays in is less important than playing in higher profile games. Players are looking to play for better teams regardless of where they are located because the higher profile games will raise brand awareness. 2) The NBA has a systemic problem on its hands with the way that it is currently constructed because better teams are rewarded with higher draft picks. In the 2014-2015 NBA season, the New Jersey Nets were the #8 seed at 38-44. By comparison, the 45-37 Oklahoma City Thunder, 39-43 Phoenix Suns, and 38-44 Utah Jazz were better teams (even though Utah had the same record) but they were rewarded with better draft picks for not making the playoffs in the West. This current system is what is perpetuating the Eastern Conference being the weaker conference. The NBA could solve this by playing more of a balanced schedule and having the best 16 teams make the playoffs regardless of the conference. In doing so, the best teams will make the playoffs and the weaker teams will get the better draft picks to improve. However, this will likely not happen any time soon because 75% of the NBA owners would have to approve the change, and a lot of those owners are concerned with their own self-interests rather than improving the NBA as a whole.

From 2008 to ~2015 the east and west were somewhat balanced, at various times the celtics, cavs, bulls, pacers, heat, and even magic were title contenders. The east then dropped off when the celtics and magic traded their stars, the pacers and bulls fell off, which just leaves lebron's team.

Nice video man. It's kind of funny that my friend and I are playing 2k19 as expansion teams and we both moved to the east. We're in 2024 and our teams are finally near the top plus the 76ers, pistons, and pacers are usually better than the majority of teams in the west. The top team in the west is the bucks (we moved them) and LeBron went back to the cavs who are also still contending. Boston and the nets are strong as well. In general the east is better and when we worry more about more teams there when we make the playoffs. I know it's a video game but with years in the future it's funny how the league has changed

Fast forward to 2023 the wet western conference is inferior, it is ludicrous that the nuggets only needed to finish 53-29 to get home court advantage throughout the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. The Suns only needed an abysmal 45-37 record just to be a top 4 seed.

MJ returned after an almost two-year break, the Bulls had a terrible record: 34-31, he did not have chemistry with the new players on the team. 2014 Nba Finals. Kawhi Leonard ( age 22 ) - FMVP . Kawhi was not even a star in 2014, unlike Shaquille O"Neal, who was already a superstar in 1995. Derrick Rose ( age 22 ) - 1x MVP ( 2011 ) 2018 ECF: Rookie Jason Tatum ( age 19 ) vs Lebron James. When people try to figure out how to fix the NBA playoffs, I always jokingly say "just take the 9 & 10 seed in the West, and put them in place of the 7 & 8 in the East". This video almost makes it a legit solution.
@NobodyTouchesJordan
@NobodyTouchesJordan 6 жыл бұрын
In the 4 round format, there have been 9 instances that a 1-seed has 56 or less wins. In all 9 of those instances, no team from that conference won the championship. *Worst 1-seed records in the 4-round format (1984-present)* 2000 Pacers - 56-26 2001 Sixers - 56-26 2014 Pacers - 56-26 1984 Lakers - 54-28 1999 Heat - 54-28 adjusted for 82 games (lockout) 2007 Pistons - 53-29 2017 Celtics - 53-29 2002 Nets - 52-30 2003 Pistons - 50-32 In the 4-round format, 8 of the 9 top seeds with 56 or less wins came from the East, the lone exception being the 1984 Lakers. That was the first year the NBA adopted the 4-round format for the playoffs. It is also interesting to note that in 6 of the 9 instances that a 1-seed had 56 or less wins, in the 4-round format, the team representing that conference in the Finals lost in only 4 or 5 games. In other words, the team that represents these weaker conferences in the Finals does not even put up much of a fight when facing an actual championship team in most cases. The exceptions are - 1984 Lakers - lost in 7 - 2000 Pacers - lost in 6 - 2003 Nets - lost in 6 The lowest record 1-seeds of a conference to win the championship are the 2010 Lakers and 2016 Cavs, tied at 57-25 apiece, with both those teams being the 1-seed themselves.

If you look the number of NBA champions in the three point era it's split about evenly between East and West. The overall win losses heavily favor the West though. This could have a lot to do with the time zone difference. West games starting at 7:30 and ending around 10:15 are actually 10:30 and ending at 1:15 in the morning for those East players. Of course other factors are at play too, but East will always be at a steep disadvantage on the schedule.
@megumi6499
@megumi6499 6 жыл бұрын
Another factor to consider is injuries and declined performance. D-Rose got injured, severely weakening the Bulls. 76er's top draft picks were injured, the 2012 Knicks were good on paper, but they couldn't perform on the court. Deron Williams degraded, Bynum was sent to the East and basically disappeared. Before Dwight was traded to LA, he was already injured.

The disparity is mostly due to the fact that most of the All-NBA squads play for the West, but even draft rules are helping to keep some of the balance of power out West. Each season, 7 East teams and 7 West teams get lotto picks, unless picks were traded. So, even though a couple of those West teams are actually better than the low playoff teams in the East, they get better draft picks. In 2015, the Thunder were better than the East's 6th, 7th, and 8th seeded teams, but got to pick before any of them. In 2014, Phoenix won 48 games, and if not for trades would've picked ahead of 4 East playoff teams. In 2013, Utah was better than ATL and Boston, who had lower draft picks. Etc. Eventually, it'll turn around, but it gets pretty ugly. Just imagine how ugly it really would've looked if the NBA played a completely balanced schedule and you played every team the same number of times.

There is a really easy solution to balance NBA and make it fair: get rid of conferences and divisions, every team plays every team 2 times (=58 games), make playoff a contest of top 16 teams (1st vs 16th, 2nd vs 15th, and so on).

A lot has to do with the Playoffs and the way it affects the draft. Teams that make the playoffs get later draft picks. The West has had teams that don't make the playoffs that would if they were in the East so those West teams that have better overall records and miss the playoffs get a higher draft pick than a East team (with a worse record) that made the playoffs. Years and years of that will cause one side to be better.

I always feel western conference does better as they are more attractive in free agency. When I was an exchange student in the US I prefer the west coast compared to the east coast, of course my comparison was Auburn vs Santa Barbara but in general west coast seems more lively and dynamic with more diverse group of people whereas East coast just seems so industrious, if we use it as reference more eastern executive just use hype as the guide to scout whereas in the west, they find the one who is a right fit for the organization which eventually draw top free agents. And for the players, the environment in the west coast I describe would be more preferable as these guys are millionaires and would wanna spend their money
