The idea they had her characterization was pretty good but sadly they unnecessarily compromised the integrity of her character and made her a hypocrite when they really didn't need to.

It is really a wonder what was going through the writer's minds when deciding to make Rhaenys trample over the large crowd of people. She is being depicted as the most level headed and pragmatic person on the black's side. Making her do because it sounded cool to them on paper really threw a wrench into Rhaenys's character and was dumb

It's pretty easy to understand. They wanted a girl boss moment, they didn't see people just props to step on but they couldn't actually have her attack because that would've ended the series right there. So basically they wanted murder porn staring the milf but they wanted to be sanctimonious about it.

It was stupid on 3 levels. Biologically, dragons are not made out of metal. They're made out of flesh; they can be pierced, torn apart, slashed, crushed (as the Targaryens will soon learn). Meleys would have gotten her back broken by the hard, concrete stone. Rhaenys would've been crushed outright by being splashed so quickly at the solid surface and falling debris. Character-wise,.it is blasphemous. I can see Rhaenyra doing this, because she's portrayed as cruel and elitist in Fire and Blood. I can see Daemon doing this because he's impulsive and brutal. I can see Aegon doing this, because he's careless and detached. I can't see Rhaenys, who's portrayed as mature, wise thanks to being alive for 5 decades, level-headed... I can't see her murdering thousands od innocents in a flinch and giving 0 f's or never bringing it up again. Narratively, it is also horrendous, because we have like many scenes (I don't remember how much, exactly) of Rhaenys speaking to Rhaenyra about how they must avoid the war, about how it's the men that are stupid and rancid, how Rhaenyra and Alicent want peace, how she understands the cost of war and dragon murder, etc. It's nonsensical for her to say all this sanctimonious bs when she killed like at least 50 people and doesn't even show the slightest remorse for it. It is contradictory. Rhaenys also doesn't murder The Greens when she could've. I understand this and I'd back it up, if it were not for the fact she did much worse to the average *innocent* citizen. It doesn't make any sense either biologically, character-wise or narratively. It pisses me off. They could've had her get out of the central pit, roar at them and leave without hurting anybody. Pretty cringe.

I like how black-haired Targaryens seem that much more cooler, which in itself makes a closed circle. Black-haired Targs are seen as a lesser people than white-haired ones, which makes black-haired work harder and more on themselves to prove their worth, which can in turn make them more capable than white-haired. The trick is in the fact that black-haired Targs are born in times when Targaryen dynasty sits tightly at the throne and usually a Black-haired Targaryen is skillfull, but a sign of dangerous times to come.

Having not read the book, her end shook us. It was like watching a car crash we couldn't stop. We kept yelling for her to leave, it wasn't worth it. RIP to one of the best characters in the show. Eve Best has to be glad to be done with that wig though. So much hair, it had to be uncomfortable. The fact she was able to command ferocity and grace with that much extra hair is another testament to her dominance of the role. Not saying the wig was necessarily bad, just saying it was a lot.

I think the idea they had for the initial characterization of Rhaenys was pretty good. Someone who came close to power only for it to be denied but instead of drowning on jealousy and resentment chose to overcome it and realized that there are more important things in life like family, happiness and peace. In contrast to her husband who was consumed by resentment and ambition. But then they felt that she needed to have a "badass" girlboss moment to prove she is cool and came up with that horrible scene in episode 9 that ruined the whole theme of her character.

As far as the coronation scene goes, we’ve only seen one other exit in or out of the dragon pit. In the books there are multiple entrances, but they presumably have locked gates since keeping the dragons from coming and going as they pleased was the whole point of the dragon pit. Unless someone was sanctioned to take out a dragon those gates would probably be locked, so I read the scene as the only way Rhaenys could make her escape

Does no one pay attention to HOTD except me? She doesn't hurt herself, or Meleys, because it's wood she bursts through, not stone. It's a wooden trapdoor over the gigantic fooking great hole in the floor, with an equally large ramp coming up from the "stables" where the dragons live. The very same home, ramp etc that is established in S1, Ep6 as existing in the "how to train your dragon" scenes where young Aegon, Aemond and Lucerys watch as Jacaerys bonds with Vermax over "Dracarys-ing" a goat inside the dragonpit. If you watch the scene where they lead Vermax up from below, if you turn up your brightness, you can see... Behold! A giant hole. Later the other boys use a pig disguised as a dragon to shame Aemond for not yet having a dragon. Aemond then goes down the ramp unaccompanied by the responsible dragon staff and gets singed a bit. This happens right before Helaena prophesises that he'll "have to close an eye" to get a dragon. Speaking of Helaena. She prophesises that "there's a beast beneath the boards" right before the gang goes looking for Aegon in KL. Boards, not stones. Boards. Like the kind of thing that you might cover up a big dragon sized hole in the floor with before letting large numbers of civilians file into the dragonpit to watch a coronation. Rhaenys knows a back way to get down, because she's been there a lot. Unlike the majority of the population of KL.

Show Rhaenys was so amazing, particularly due to Eve Best's performance. I really just wish that they changed the Dragonpit scene to even just be something like Meleys and Rhaenys breaking through the door and hovering over the crowd, roaring as thousands abandon the temple before having Rhaenys land when more of them clear out. There were ways to do the "Rhaenys breaks through and almost kills the Greens" scene without it being so mass murdery. I could appreciate that it give Rhaenys and Team Black some edge to them that they're so ruthless to their enemies, but the show never really did anything with it. I am curious if the next episode with have citizens hate Meleys' corpse for the incident at the pit, that could be a nice way to somewhat wrap up that event. Regardless, it just felt like they were trying too hard for a "Game of Thrones Moment tm" and it's a shame that it put such a wrench in an otherwise really entertaining character.

I love both versions of Rhaenys, they're both good on their own ways. But I think the biggest sin with show Rhaenys is not having her Baratheon hair. Having her have a Rogue type of hair would've been the best compromise between showing she was a Targaryen and keeping up with the lore that Baratheon genes always win. Fantasy Haven's first theory about Rhaenys breaking-through the floor of the Dragonpit is definitely the correct one. Throughout season 2, we see that Rhaenys is trying to avoid war and bloodshed if at all possible, which is in-line with her characterization in season 1. Wiping-out the Greens in attendance at Aegon's coronation would have turned the soon-to-be civil war into nothing but an anemic rebellion by Lord Hightower and MAYBE Lord Lannister (Lord Jason would be mad at his brother being slain but Lannister's are often very pragmatic to the point of cynical. He'd see that there would be little point in fighting due to their low chance of victory.) With one "dracarys," Rhaenys would eliminate the usurper, the members of the small council supporting him, the Kingmaker, the Hand of the King supporting the usurper, and (probably most importantly) Aemond, the rider of Vhagar who was likely the only dragon who could defeat Meleys in combat (possibly Caraxes and Daemon could defeat Meleys and Rhaenys, but TBD and at this point Rhaenys has made up her mind that she is going to side with the Blacks, so they won't be fighting anyway.) Not only will the political and military heads of the coup be wiped-out, but their greatest trump card will be as well- without Aemond to command her, Vhagar will not fight. Also: House Baratheon has not yet sworn to the Greens (because Aemond has not gone to Storm's End,) so although the Greens would have the might of House Hightower and POSSIBLY House Lannister, the entire rest of the realm would be undeclared and faced with an adult claimant in Rhaenyra against a toddler in Jaehaerys, the majority of the noble houses would likely declare for the Blacks. The peasants who were collateral damage from her bursting through the floor were a necessary sacrifice in her mind because wiping-out the Greens and preventing the war would save tens of thousands of lives. Although totally fair point by Fantasy Haven: how did Meleys burst through the floor with Rhaenys on her back without squishing Rhaenys? The answer is plot armor. But at the last second... she can't do it. It's worth remembering that the taboo against kinslaying goes DEEP in Westerosi psyche. Kinslaying and breaking of Guest Right are the worst possible actions imaginable. It is an act that is reviled by the Old Gods and the New. To follow-through with her plan is not just an incredible social atrocity, it is an affront to the gods themselves. In addition, Alicent puts herself in front of Aegon, so Rhaenys can't help but face a reminder that like herself, Alicent is willing to do anything to protect her children. So she can't go through with it and resolves to do the next best thing: escape and warn the Blacks what has happened

I have found that most of the changes the show has made for House of the Dragon is superior to the book Fire and Blood. I think the fact Fire and Blood is basically a history book, there is a lot of missing context from a personal level and a lot of missing characterization. It's all simple. The show makes things feel more genuine and realistic
