Except the Porter wasn’t as incompetent as commonly assumed (the torpedo one and her sinking are genuine though embellished, but the other famous incidents are not and were completely fabricated in the 1990s). I still say the most useless ship in world history was the U-1206. When it was first deployed it's captain damaged it so badly that it had to ascend over the water line close to the Scottish coast, which wasn't a good thing to do for a German submarine in April 1945. It was immediately spotted and attacked by British aircraft, three (or four, depending on the sources) sailors lost their lives and the crew decided the damage was so severe that their only option was to sink the sub. The surviving 46 sailors became POW. Oh, and how did the captain (whose name was Schlitt) damage the submarine? He didn't use the toilet according to instructions.

Again with singling Yamato out for being useless when WWII-gen battleships in general were useless (even those that served in supporting roles were a waste of resources and utterly pointless, as these roles could have been filled much more efficiently by building more subcapital units or, for some shore bombardment applications, by using old, already-existing battleships). Aside from Washington and Duke of York, the battleships of the WWII generation were pointless and a massive procurement failure, regardless of nationality.

In case no one has pointed it out, the picture at 3:25 is not Admiral Roshtosh- Rosh-- Ro- that Russian Admiral, but Admiral Togo Heihachiro on the compass bridge of his flagship Mikasa.
@seanbigay1042
@seanbigay1042 3 ай бұрын
You can tell this by all those sacks tied round the bridge. They were ordered placed there by Togo as protection against flying shrapnel during the battle. It's not that Rozhestventsky couldn't have thought of this, too -- but could he have trusted his crew to actually do this useful thing?

The Kamchatka was Japan's greatest use of mental warfare. With it they helped destroy the fleet's moral long before it reached Asian territorial waters.

I like to say that I´ve studied extensively the Russo Japanese War and this is literally the first time that I see a reference to a secret code in case there was a mutiny onboard. It seems unlikely that a code would be chosen which so closely resembled a valid action message... 🤔can you tell me where did you read that?

I'm highly amused that a certain cheap vodka sold in the US carries the same name and has a somewhat notorious habit of producing headaches to those who consume it, so the 'spirit' of the Kamchatka lives on.
