Cao Cao is literally called the "Hero of Chaos." You are correct to say that he was considered a hero and, in a way, still is.

What a beautiful looking blade

It is a beautiful blade. Working through the Chen Jian form with it, it does seem a touch long for that, but I'm not nearly as fluid as you.

It is quite a long blade, I've noticed that forms might need some adjustments to work around the length. With that said, I'm still impressed with the commanding way it moves.

How does it compare to the Flying Phoenix, being of very similar proportions?

Although they are similar proportions, much is different between the two. The Soaring Sky is already a bit longer and heavier, but the blade shape changes the moving weight as well so it has a little more chopping power. The Flying Phoenix is very well refined, and personally, I prefer it of the two. I find it to be more agile, and the blade cross section makes it snap through targets even without the added weight. I have seen a few people that prefer the Soaring Sky, but I find that the Flying Phoenix moves much better and with more control.

Have you experienced the grip biting into your hand when performing quick maneuvers? The wrap looks very grippy

Actually no issues with the grip, it is quite grippy and has some give to it, but not too much to cause blisters.
