It really depends on what you call 'rich'. For Sydneysiders, being rich would be considered living in Mosman, the Eastern Suburbs or somewhere inner city. making at least 200,000 a year and so on. In comparison to other places in the world, Sydney's middle class could be considered rich in so many standards. Sydneysiders seem to forget most of them own or live in houses, with plenty of space and have good access to public transportation; a very safe city to walk around, very green and so on. They feel like they're not rich because their spending is high. International students seem to be able to survive paying tuiton fees + all other expenses, without Centrelink benefits with 24 hours of work and entry-level jobs. I get it, is much easier to pay $10 for a coffee + avo toast than to take 10 minutes and make yourself some coffee + toast at home, not to mention the money spent on gambling or at pubs. The grass is always greener on the other side, I guess. When you live abroad you will notice how good life in Sydney is.

Thanks for watching & commenting. Of course, different people may have a different idea of rich, especially if they come from another country or culture, but, regardless of your definition, assuming everyone, or even the majority of people, in a particular country are rich, is not a good idea. The reality is, a lot of people in Australia, struggle. I dare say the majority do. And when people have to wait 10 years to get into social housing, you know things are not good. A lot of international students live in illegal accomodation, with 4 or more people crammed into a room that should legally only have 2 people in it, & living off 2 minute noodles. Not all obviously, but plenty do. They may not make as much money in other countries, but their cost of living is also a lot cheaper. It would be interesting to see a comparison between income & expenses in some countries, & I may well do that at some point. What I do know, since i actually live here, is Asutralia, particularly Sydney, is expensive.

It seems like paradise compared to some places I have seen overseas. It's not perfect living in some parts of Sydney but this video only confirmed to me how lucky we are. I was born in the inner city of Sydney when it was mainly working class blue-collar and cheap to live in. Even though I don't live there anymore I visit quite often. There are suburbs in Sydney that do have their social problems, but I believe we are more fortunate than most large cities on this planet.
@trentstravels
@trentstravels Ай бұрын
@quarkcypher Yeah, we possibly are. But obviously these lower socio-economic areas exist, & there are problems, which would surprise some people. As I mention in the video, there are certain parts of the world where people think everyone in Australia is rich, & the point of the video is to show that is not the case. Only a small percentage of the population is rich. Thanks for watching & taking the time to comment. 😊

Still looks pretty decent to me. I live in Vancouver, Canada, and there are a lot more squatters and transients living on the streets than I see in this video.

You are correct. But the high cost of living in Sydney, and Australian cities in general, does make it difficult for a lot of people. Sydney is my home town and it is a great place to live if you are financially comfortable. No such thing as a no-go area in Sydney. The title of his video seemed like a joke to me as there is nowhere in Sydney I wouldn't venture.
@trentstravels
@trentstravels Ай бұрын
Thanks for watching & commenting. I haven't been to Vancouver, so can't make a comparison. The main point of the video is to show that not all Australians are rich. There are a lot of people who think we are, & maybe by extension of that, that all Westerners are rich. That's obviously not the case. Only a small percentage of the population is rich, & we do have people who are not well off, living in terrible conditions.
@trentstravels
@trentstravels Ай бұрын
@quarkcypher Thanks for watching & commenting. Not sure why you think the title is a joke, as the video does provide a realistic look at Sydney, & the area around The Three Sisters could certainly be considered "the hood ". But everyone has their own opinion, which they are entitled to. 😊

@@trentstravels I lived in Sydney between 1985 - 1990. I liked it but there was too much crime I thought at the time. I was young, single and handsome back then. I had been approached more than once by grown men propositioning me for an encounter in Hyde Park or elsewhere secluded. I left the country for Canada instead, being European originally. I never had these things happen in Canada, but Canada has changed too, like all the Anglophone countries did the last 15 years.

@westerlywinds5684 Thanks for watching & commenting. Sydney is not the safest place. Obviously it varies to certain degrees depending on the area, but some parts are dangerous. I have travelled a lot as you may have gathered from the name of my channel, & I do prefer other places, & will eventually relocate, which is something I mention in other videos, & to a degree in the next video. 😊

Great Video. Actually asian people , especially in rich asian countries such as china, japan, singapore know that people in australia are not rich. The country is a lifeline and lifeboat for many refugees, asylum seekers and people seeking a better life here than their homeland. whilst many work hard and want to have a good life, the tax system is very punitive and maximum tax at 47% starts to accrue once you earn around $190,000. After tax, there isnt much left to raise a family and meet the expensive cost of living. the tax system do not give people incentive to work hard. Your video is good but most people know your story already, for many years. The rich actually dont want to live in australia, as the tax will erode their weath and australia lacks things to do and infrastructure is very poor compare to modern asian cities like tokyo, singapore, shanghai, chongqing. Asian cities also have more variety of everything, food, cloths, brands, you name it. This is because geographically, australia is too far away from the world, so we are very slow in obtaining technology, and trends.often we lag 6-8 years behind asia. Australia is a great country and seems like heaven for poor people when compare to their sad homeland. To these people, australia is like heaven. .

Of course, this video may have ended up being pointless to some extent, as very few, if any, viewers are from Thailand or the Philippines.
