We do not have both sides to the story. I would submit it's a hell of a lot harder than "I don't like their boyfriend" to get someone placed otherwise I'd have been in foster care several times.

"as long as I'm getting paid" I know a lot of people will think I'm just being judgemental, but honestly this whole video just felt symptomatic of where we've gone wrong as a society. Im not picking on her or singling her out, I'm not religious or particularly moralistic, so it's not all the sex per se that's the issue. It just seems such a vapid existence, everything is transactional and if she can make tons of money and buy more sh#t with it then she's a success. Hey, i just bought my dad a new flat screen tv, hey I just bought my mom a 600 dollsr chair. She says its a way of "giving back" but it wouldn't exactly stun me if they'd be far happier without this stuff is turning tricks to buy. Which is how America is as a whole I think - so obsessed with consumerism its replaced humanity. She came from a good home, she wasn't abused but her whole value system is based around material things. That's what achievement looks like to many people. I lived in the middle east for many years and although Im not spiritual I felt that people had a much more fulfilling life. Im now in Thailand and I feel its the same here too that way. Im not describing it very well but things feel so empty for want of a better word in the West. We may be rich by GDP standards but in many of the ways that actually matter we're very poor I think.

thats the reality of the world, not just an america vs rest of the world thing. as much as i hate to say this, money really is the biggest contributor to a lot of peoples' happiness and success. at the end of the day people have their own morals and values and if they are happy with doing sex work making more money than your regular 9-5 and barely have enough money to pay rent, then more power to them. I disagree with what you said about this being something 'wrong' with the society, i think the world has always been this way, people have always been doing the 'wrong' things in their best interests. And i am not saying this for myself but i promise you a lot of people would prefer doing her line of work if given the opportunity. it is what it is. money rules

a prostitute once told me that selling yourself as a sex object will make you lose your soul, it breaks them within. They can never be the same again. She called it "consent rape". Some clic are pretty strange. These girls do things that these men's wives or gf refuse to do. Some of that stuff is pretty gross. She'll realize this later. She's emotional but no matter how light she makes of it, she feels it inside that she's losing herself. I'm sad for her. She doesn't think she can do anything else.

Every time a sex worker on SWU talks about how normal their life is and how happy they are, you can start a 10 minute timer, and before it goes off, they are almost guaranteed to bring up their family not knowing what they do and/or get emotional about it. The cognitive dissonance is so absolutely glaring, it's sad.

It's how brains protect themselves, denial. 😢 Most people in SW will lie to themselves bc they cannot face reality yet (or ever), it's not until later on that it takes such a toll that they can't stay in denial. I get so sad when I hear women in denial like this, but I know there IS time and hope that they'll realise. Esp now that so many women do speak out about the reality of SW.

I love this channel and I truly believe the work Mark does is art that helps us come together as a society. But there's a pattern that whenever there's an attractive young woman in front of his lens he doesn't just let them speak like all the other people he interviews, but instead gets into more of a conversation with them where he keeps trying to insert himself into the story. He rarely even says anything with other interviewees which I find makes it all the more special, because people get the chance to be candid without anyone steering the story in a certain direction. With young beautiful women however (especially when it's sex workers), Mark comments on the way they look, asking them if they're "fast", almost making sexual remarks every now and then. The neutrality he usually has goes out the window and it becomes so obvious that once again another man is just looking at these women through the typical male gaze which is truly heart breaking for these girls. They come on there to be vulnerable and share the most intimate of details, only to sit in front of another guy who tries to flirt with them in some way.

Well thought out comment- I do think Mark maybe is trying to relate, help them open up or make them comfortable by behaving in a way that mirrors how they like to be spoken to but in a more respectful way. I also think when someone shows up to an interview dressed in lingerie, it may make him uncomfortable and he gets chatty. That’s my two cents. Love what Mark does. I find him to be respectful and to chameleon into certain character traits to make his guest comfortable. Some guests are less open-seeming and I think that reflects in Mark commenting less.

Well that is because sex workers are the only job where we really expect people to like what they do when statistics show a good deal of people especially Americans don't like their jobs. If you asked a waitress or Janitor these same questions, "Do you ever hate your job?". "Do you ever think about stopping?" "Do you ever feel dirty after working?". "Does serving food as a living mean that you don't like to cook/serve food like for your family when not working?". I don't think the answers would be dissimilar. It is the Puritan based attitude towards sex from society not the work that I see as an issue.

I don't believe there are three people involved in men turning to sex workers (Mark's comment). This is completely on the man that chooses this as his way of feeling better/escaping. Relationships are work because of the responsibility and accountability for their partner/family. For men to turn to sex workers does not speak to the wife action/inaction, there is divorce, hobbies, maturity, counseling, self development. It is the man's decision to check out from their relationship. Sex workers need to also stop blaming the partner of their client. Many of these men are quitters, controlled by sex, devalue their partners/family and willing to give it all away for sex outside of the relationship. Sex workers in most cases you are actually getting the worse of a man...........Rollii, stay true to yourself and know your worth as you figure all of this out.

Because love and hate are inextricably linked, a professional sex worker should have the ability to give a significant other an unlimited number of chances for him or her to be liked whereas the risk of being disliked is not worth anything with regards to such a career. Personally, I think it is less radical or stressful when a woman separates the sex act from the failures of relationships as it is oftentimes a self discovery process wherefore learning from inexperienced partners is also inexpensive.

As someone who also went down this route though not this dedicated, I can tell you that very quickly you see that many of them are not victims, they're adults participating in a very active market and economy . I personally feel the porn industry is out of control, but there are 80 MILLION men , mostly 30-44, who are OF's prime subscription base. Let that number sink in. The population of the US is 330ish million. No matter how you spin it, the porn and sex industry is used by a LOT of people, throughout human history. So while you might think Mark is 'weird' for talking normally like any other interview, it's because it's super normalized and once you investigate, it shares a ton with other markets.

I don't think she's really into it because she mentions trying to get an education at one point and only returning to sex work when that failed. She mentions struggling to stay employed in regular jobs because of dysfunctional behaviour on her part (i.e. poor work attendance), so it seems that sex work is not something she really aspires too but rather something she has rationalized in her life because she doesn't see any better options for herself. She also mentions anger management issues and interpersonal conflicts a lot, it's pretty clear she has a lot of issues but is also in too much denial at this point to even begin to process her situations.

I haven’t watched the video yet, but the comments suggest she is buying her father stuff with the proceeds. As the dad of a teenaged daughter I will just say to ANYONE doing the same, there is nothing in this world that I could ever want enough to see my daughter do this for money. I’m crying my eyes out for this family right now. The only “things” I want are the health, safety and happiness of my children. If I was given a TV paid for in this manner I don’t think I could ever watch any tv ever again. Way too many females are over sexualized and think this culture of sleeping with everyone is “empowering” trust me when the boys you are dealing with are a little older they absolutely will not find that attractive. Lastly, I know a young person that focused on getting her bachelors degree in four years and becoming a licensed RN at 22 years old. She is and incredibly intelligent young lady from a great family that even does a money budget……THOSE qualities are extremely attractive for real men. Someday someone will be very happy that she worked so hard…..she will also be happy for herself. THAT is true empowerment
