Well, that's the american way aint it. Sink or swim. Come to canada and take the classes here. The instructors are amazing, actually good people, never yell at anyone and give you proper instructions and time. Also booking a harley class is not a good idea. You need to start learning on a smaller bike, which is lighter. Summer classes are alright, i just completed my G class in April and it was still freezing in canada at that point. Had to start the class at 7 am and ride all day in freezing weather and then give your test in freezing weather as well. Wasnt an easy day at all

You are not the first person to cry on the course, lots of people get so nervous, my wife cried, dont tell her I told you. You just need to practice on small roads and parking lots with Burch and you will do fine, it is simply practice and repetition and you will eventually get to where you want to be with your skillset. Loving the videos. It takes time for everyone to learn, you just dont see the struggle they go through.

A 500 pound bike is a lot to move around. I remember my first classes and I was surprised how heavy a "real bike" is. Also, I failed my first driving test where it was super hot, and I was sweating balls, so you'll get there. Maybe you should see if you can get a class where they have a somewhat smaller bike? I'm sure you'll do fine when you get your bearings :)

I withdrew after Day One of the course at Harley. I felt very much as you did - overheated, overwhelmed, and exhausted by the bike itself. I'm 61 and a complete newbie (and a 5'4" woman) and I also feel that I can do this after some time and practice (and looking into a different course even though I hate to leave that money on the table). Thanks so much for sharing your experiences - it gives me faith in myself!!
@tashawroten58952 жыл бұрын
Don’t look at it as “blowing your money”. It was a life lesson that cost you $400 but you learned from it. As Aristotle said “ Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” You knew your limits and was wise enough to listen to yourself. I took my class (with not ever having been on a MC) in August when I lived in PA (its free to residents) and I had to quit during the range portion for the same reason. I got sick from the heat and way overheated but I had great instructors. He saw what was happening and got me off the range. Fortunately I could sign up for the range portion only at no additional cost. So that is what I did but in September when it was cooler. Keep practicing and we all believe in you.

I took the 2-day BRC MSF course in July. The first day I dropped the bike within the first 10 mins on the range. At the end of Day 1, I thought I made a big mistake in buying my bike before going through the class. I ended up passing but the first few weeks, I rarely rode because I was scared. I started off with riding around my neighborhood. Then I took it to empty parking lots to hone my skills with the clutch and starting on a hill. I prefer riding around the backroads of Calvert and AA Co to highway riding as less cars to deal with. Ride your own ride and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. You’ll get there whenever is right for you.

Same. I bought my VStar 250 before the course. During the MSF, I dropped my bike, kept going into neutral instead of first, couldn't get it into neutral when I needed it to be, I was told I was too slow on the exercises, couldn't make the figure 8 turn, and I failed the MSF. I immediately signed up for the last possible class that same season and practiced on my VStar in my driveway and on a bicycle for counter steering (MSF instructor suggested it). I passed the MSF the 2nd time and realized, nobody knew that was my 2nd time. I also saw how easy everyone had passed when I failed but I assumed they were all new to riding. I still struggle because I can only ride around my small neighborhood and in a small nearby church parking lot, so progress has been very slow, but I'm not giving up.

I didn't start riding at all until 35. I took a weekend ABATE course, in February, in Colorado. It was pretty good, and I did better than I thought. Passed with no problems. Then came...the actual road. With actual drivers, road conditions, etc. My wife eventually took hers too, though she insisted on using her scooter. We had a lot of adventures, but she decided being a passenger was just overall better for her. After a couple hundred thousand miles...I think I'm OK at it, but overconfidence gets people hurt. Good on you for knowing you weren't in the right state of mind to continue. That class will be there again if you want to take it.

Keep your head up. I learned how to ride two years ago at the age of 55. Never been on a bike in my life. I thought about taking the Harley course but opted for a different school near my home. Turned out to be the better choice for me. I took the course in mid July with a heat index of 96 degrees so I feel your pain. The difference with my course was they used smaller bikes the old rebel 250. It gave me a better since of control which I think is essential for new riders. I suggest trying a school with smaller bikes like rebel 300. it fits you perfectly. Good luck on your next test if you not taken it yet. you got this.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience as I am going through the exact process and feelings right now. I had to withdraw from my HD MSF course yesterday, on day 3. I have learned a lot, but the tasks got advanced so quickly, and as a new rider with zero experience, I just didn't feel safe to continue and would not be able to pass the course. To be able to use all four extremities for different controls is not an easy feat. I don't know anyone who started playing piano in just 2-3 days :) I totally agree that we must not lose hope; nothing is impossible. It is all about practicing basic skills until you feel more comfortable, then moving on to the next level. Everyone has a different learning curve. No one even told me that I would need a crash bar for my brand-new bike :)) So now my plan is to get the crash bars ASAP and start practicing on my own. Thanks so much again for sharing your experience and being an inspiration for the new riders!

I just finished my MSF course through the HD Riding Academy this past weekend (in Florida) and there were moments I thought I wouldn't be able to do the riding evaluation. I couldn't do the U-turns to safe my life during the exercises, but somehow managed it during the evaluation. I dropped the bike during the course, put my foot down about 4 times, and stalled it probably 10 times, but it all worked out when it came time for the evaluation. Thank you for documenting your journey! People always post their successes, but hardly anyone posts their struggles. It's hard when you want something so badly, but your mind and body have other ideas. I took the MSF course at 52 years old. The first day was brutal! It was so hot and walking the bike around takes a lot of effort when you're a small person. I was sick for a couple days afterward. I had trouble understanding the instructions which led to me dropping the bike. I wasn't able to shift from 1st to 2nd because my feet were too small. I was very upset. I almost didn't go back for the second class. I'm glad I did. The next class I rode a Grom and it was a huge difference. I could reach all the controls. It was much lighter. It fit me perfectly. I don't think I would have passed if I had to take it on a Harley. I decided I prefer riding scooters. I get to ride without the hassle of shifting. I never wanted to ride a cruiser anyway. I like the bikes from the 70's. The CB350, etc. Don't beat yourself up. As women we tend to do that to ourselves. You'll get there. Practice in a parking lot with your rebel until you're really confident.

I'm about to start the true part of my journey just like you. I recently invested about 6k from a loan towards all my gear, a 2018 rebel 300, and the licensing fees. I convinced myself that all the warnings people have given me and all of the financial issues I might face, didn't matter. I went for it, and I'm extremely happy. The guy I bought from upgraded to an 1100 just like Burch and I think I made a friend. In the future I'll reach out to him to go on a ride. I have all the gear needed to keep me safe (and two helmets because my head got fatter on the ride home and the 1st one stopped fitting), a bike, and determination to learn. I'm hoping to take my classes here really soon once I have the money and until then, ONLY WHEN I FEEL LIKE IT, I take my bike up and down the neighborhood and practice for half an hour. We all start somewhere, and I think it's super important that the lower experience end of motorcycling gets the coverage you're giving the internet. I really hope that once you do get your license, we'll see you and Burch go on some cool adventures and finally enjoy your bikes together! Good luck! You got this

My husband encouraged me to take a Can Am trike course this past month to get my 3 wheel motorcycle license. I had gone through all the emotions you have talked about in this video. Come time for class. Hubby came with me for both day's of the 2 day course. Nerves were on high as well as the emotions. Come the 2nd day and triple digit heat. Near the end of the class and going through the test of knowledge I was starting to over heat, legs were just barely starting to cramp, and I had about enough emotionally. One of my 3 other class mates noticed and started to encourage me to keep me going till the end of the class. It was so nice to have the reminder that I was truly not alone. I was able to pass the class the first time through. I could not have asked for a better group of people to have spent the weekend with. From the other students, to the instructor, and my hubby. This experience was truly out of my comfort zone by a long stretch. If I can do it with a learning disability, verbal disability, and an auditorial disability. You can get it as well. I know this was 10 months ago but i had to share my experience so far, in case it helps someone. I am a short, light, woman. In my country you have to pas a Certificate of Basic Training before you can ride on the road and you can only ride a 125cc (you have to pass a full license to ride bigger bikes. My first attempt it was hot and in full gear, I became unwell and had to give up by lunchtime. It took me a day to cool down and I lost £175 but I learned I really wanted to do it. I had to wait 4 months for it to cool down. I tried again and the first day the bike was too heavy 143kg and i really struggled. At the end of that day, I was ready to give up my dream, I was aching all over and I was devastated. I went back the next day just to watch but the instructor said he'd been thinking about how I learned and once everyone else had gone off on the road test, he brought out a light scooter and taught me one to one. I loved it but didn't have time to complete the course. Now it is too hot again but in October I will go back and finish the course. It's taking me a long time but I'll get there. I know how to ride and I have now ridden 3 bikes and 2 scooters. Everyone is different and learns in different ways and times. Don't give up and go one to one if you are having difficulties, it's worth it.😊

I'm super impressed with your honesty here, and I completely relate! I attempted the Harley course with zero experience and quit after an hour and a half on the range. It moved far too fast for me and I wasn't even close to ready. I can't think of another time I've been so humiliated. I also had some bad luck with my coaches, who were very impatient. So now I'm taking 1-on-1 lessons with a smaller bike. I personally think the Harley course is poorly designed for a lot of beginners. It's rushed, and the bike is too heavy and clunky IMO. For anybody like me who had zero experience (and can't even drive stick shift) I would strongly recommend avoiding the Harley course, at least until after they have some experience on a smaller bike where they can become comfortable with the basics.

You know, in many countries, including New Zealand, you are not allowed to ride anything bigger than a 250cc for the first year of having your full license. This ensures that you have a good grounding on real roads in real situations before you go and purchase that 500, 750, 1100cc bike. So don't feel bad about the course you took. It’s great that you understood that safety should come first. I think a lot of riders tend to forget that. When you aren’t comfortable doing something then you shouldn’t do it for your safety and for others. I remember going through my classes on learning to ride and the bike provided just felt so wrong and the gears would stick and the instructors kept yelling at me to shift and it just wouldn’t do it and I tried explaining it to them but they didn’t believe me. They finally took the bike aside after I did my test and we were supposed to get to 3rd gear and it just wouldn’t shift and I literally had to jerk my entire leg up just to finally get it into 3rd gear. I almost had a perfect score but they still docked me points for not getting into 3rd as quickly as they wanted.

For me, it was the day before my final exam, I was practicing a U turn just like any other time i was out on the parking lot, but it was rainy and i underestimated how little i can lean while the road is wet, so i went in there, leaned, and immediately felt uncomfortable, the tires were slipping, so out of fear I got back up, but i was only mid turn, and i knew i couldn't break while It's wet and I'm at an angle, so I just let it go out of the parking lot into a grass field, where the front wheel slipped and the bike fell over. The next day i was super scared to even hop on the bike beacuse it was raining again and I was supposed to do the range and then hop on the road, EU regulations and stuff. Really a demotivating experience, but I ended up acing it without a problem. So the motto goes, don't let your fear stop you, but don't stop it from keeping you safe.

Cried, didn't finish, lost money and pride. But I'm not giving up even though I am 61 I will do it.

Ok, I just have to reply to this post. I'm 61 as well. Major life change almost two years ago (this month) when my wife of 38 years died. Year one after that: pretty despondent and didn't care much about anything. But not totally useless as I did enough to keep my mind occupied and improve the house a lot. Basically kept busy doing something, or planning something. Great friends....you can never have too many of them. About a month ago I asked myself, "What is it that you've always wanted to do but never got around to it, and then forgot about it?" The answer came pretty easily: I always wanted to learn how to ride a motorcycle, to own one, and to ride it across the country (or anywhere long distance). I never had a passion for MC's, it's just a desire I had. I gave it up and put it out of my mind with no second thoughts, no regrets, when I got married. This is because I kind of thought riding a MC was a risky thing and I wasn't about taking unnecessary risks while married. She didn't ride MC's. But now....why not? I live in west central Florida and signed up for a 3-day Harley Davidson Riding Academy. Of course, in the class of 9 people I was the only motorcycle virgin; everyone was there having ridden motorcycles all their lives, either because their husbands or wives did and they learned that way, or they rode "dirty" on their own with no endorsement and were looking to get legal, or they rode dirty all their lives and got a citation and were told if they got an endorsement, the ticket would be dropped. But I was the only one who never even sat on a motorcycle. Not one time in 61 years. I gave myself a 40-45 percent chance of passing and getting an endorsement because of this. If I passed, then good. If I didn't, well, at least I started the process, I rode a MC for the first time, and I would know what I needed to do to learn how to ride and get tested. As I expected, I didn't pass the riding portion of the class because I couldn't get my head around "trusting the bike" and doing what you need to do to accomplish slow speed maneuvers (right angle turns, u-turns, shifting properly, overuse of the clutch and the front brake, etc.). I dropped the bike one time (thankfully only one time) and when it was clear to the instructors that I wouldn't catch up in time to be tested, I was pulled from the class. Not entirely disappointed for a couple of reasons. I learned a lot, I rode a motorcycle, and I know I need to take a different path than most people do who take to it more easily. I don't have a natural aptitude for riding (or learning to ride) a motorcycle, especially in just three days. I have to get time on a bike before I learn how to maneuver a bike. So my path is private lessons. The first one is free from a Harley academy instructor. After that, I pay for the lessons. Ok, I'm retired and single and have nothing but time and enough resources to where I'm able to do that. And that's how it'll happen. I should have my first lesson in a few weeks. And after I feel comfortable riding and maneuvering and the instructor tells me the same, I'll be ready to attend the 3-day academy again. ** FYI, my two instructors were, IMO, not meant to be teachers. Each of the last two days was supposed to be from 7-Noon. We cut out on the first day of riding at 9am, so I didn't get much time on the bike. The extreme heat on the asphalt was the impetus behind their wanted to get out early, which no one else objected to. I was cut loose at about 9am on the second day of riding. Honestly not blaming the instructors for my own deficiencies, but as an instructor for part of my own career, I can say there was almost no positive reinforcement and mostly frustration on their part with everyone, not just myself. It didn't help but I know it's on me to learn how to ride. Wish me luck. LOL I'll try to remember to send another post in a few months with the results.

It's hard to hear things went so rough for you, but I think this is even more encouraging and real for someone like me when attempting something new. Hoping to try the MSF course and see how I fare. Thank you for sharing your experience!

You’ll do great!! Definitely read up on the class you want to take and remember that there is no shame in failing or walking away like I did if it becomes too much! Good luck!!🤘🏻

It's great seeing the journey of a new driver. Not passing 1st time is as you said, a reality for a lot of people. Being that you're not a 6ft stong bloke, I think a course with smaller bikes would suit you much better. I look forward to seeing your progress!

Thank you! You’re 100% correct!! I’m looking into classes with smaller bikes. It’s been nice to hear about everyone’s experiences and how often not everyone passed on the first go!

Keep learning your bike with Burch. He knows what hes doing. I wouldnt retake that harley class either. Most states have just regular training courses for your endorsement. The one I went to had 200cc Hondas. And alot of motorcycle courses allow you to bring your own bike. There are even a bunch of people that have done their courses with the Honda Navi.

Agreed! I love going to practice with Burch, he has a lot of good experience...No more Harley classes here.. looking into local course and I could take it on the Navi but I don't want to cheat the class. I gotta learn and practice on my 300!
