Majella O'Donnell took her adolescent son Philly to be shot in both legs one night. Majella, Philly, and his shooters all live in Derry, Northern Ireland. While the "Troubles" formally ended in 1998, the conflict continues. They despise the government and the police.
Much of this takes place under the United Kingdom's jurisdiction. How do you bring your son to be shot?
So, what happens next? What is the state of family life now? What is a community's reaction? When do wars truly come to an end? Sinéad O'Shea has been filming this disturbing yet darkly humorous portrayal of a post-conflict society for five years.

It doesn't make someone insane, bad or evil just because they like guns and knives. If the kid shows signs of mental/behavioral issues or if he's unusually quiet THEN it would be a red flag. I had more weapons than that and I never thought about using them on another person... Unless someone broke into my house or something like that.

If she can do this to HER SON and be FREE - WHAT ON EARTH?!??! (Is this REALLY true?) The opening scene has a picture on the wall about mum having EVERY WORD - first, last and anything in between - i paused the video to read it - THAT ALONE seems like these children are living with a MONSTER - and what mum would let her son have all those things and NOT be concerned with the way he is speaking about them?!?!?! IF this is real then what is it? PERMISSABLE LEGAL CHILD ABUSE? (not to mention ACCOMPLICE in a SHOOTING?) THIS IS JUST SICK. (How can it be true? surely it ends that it is NOT a true thing...)

Violence breeds violence, unfortunately. Some people have too much to cope with in life, are powerless too often, don’t know where to turn, and trust the wrong people. All that does is lead to another generation of suffering. I was very lucky. I did not need to physically overpower or punish my children unless they were too little to understand right from wrong or to recognize danger. We spent a lot of time talking about morality, conscience, karma, altruism, and tried to live as good examples to them. We read philosophy, we volunteered at food banks and libraries, we donated time, money and resources when we could. I’m sure we screwed them up, because all parents fail at something. But my kids are maturing into caring adults who want to help make the world a better place. I just feel so sad for these kids here who were never shown a better way to live.

No mother should be afraid of her sons, and she certainly appears to be. This is a perfect example of why discipline with children has to start young (NOT abuse, a parent can discipline without abuse!) because there is her 15 yr old son running his mouth, and she just sits there and grins. I find it an odd dichotomy between what Hugh was saying of the brothers, and what the family was.

This film leaves me with so many thoughts and questions. It hit me when Hugh explained how deep the distrust of Britain lies in the community, describing it as an instinct or a special gene. Generations after generations are brought up using violence to defend against violence. Even the mediators are pro-violence. How intelligent the younger brother is. How sad it is that fear is this family's go-to emotion. How opposite sides believe they are doing right by the community, both resolving issues with violence. How easy it is to feed the conspiracy theories when all the information out there is vague or contradictory. It must be so difficult to break this vicious cycle.

Not entirely true. Nature has a huge say in how people turn out. It has been proven over and over that much of what we decide is determined by our DNA. Look at twins separated at birth. The similarities are uncanny. Children never knowing one parent growing up to have the same mannerisms and decision making similarities. As parents we do our very best to raise responsible, respectful humans, but sometimes inborn desires go awry and what you get is a crapshoot.

I remember reading about the war in Northern Ireland as young woman in Australia and really could not understand how religion had caused this. Decades later and a visit to Ireland in 2008, more research and a great guide who was 18 at the time told my group the story from his point of view. One of our group was British and I was quite surprised at how negative his reaction was to a day, that I found enlightening and not at all prejudiced. Also read a history of Ireland which explained how all this came about. So sad that the aftermath is still causing so much pain.

People think slapping/hitting/spanking a child will teach them a lesson, but what it really is, is lazy emotionally & mentally abusive parenting. If it actually worked we wouldn’t have prisons full of people who raised in abusive homes and it’s not just the ones locked in behind the bars. Police departments, corrections officers and any of our Armed forces are FULL of emotionally stunted grown men, who were never able to work through the trauma of their abusive childhoods. As the old saying goes, hurt people, hurt people.

No wonder the youth are resorting to drugs, or anyone for that matter, if there's really no opportunity for a future like they say because of the jobs situation, but there also seems to be a level of fear and unrest too. Exactly, proper parenting isn't happening in a home such as that, or any home with that same mindset. The ignorance from the parent's mouths to their son's mouths tell us how they were raised.
