Only thing I'm surprised about is how much it rains! I don't find it super cold and we do have moisture/humidity issues, but no black mold!! We are remodeling so we are painting with an anti-humidity paint and then regular paint. Definitely need warm clothes and a space heater in the bedroom, but it's all about adapting and learning what works for you!! We just repaired a wood burner so yhat should help yhis year!!

It can be if you run it 24/7, but not if you heat things up and then turn it down, wear warm clothes and use a wood burner if you can...All about management!! I don't find it too expensive, but I lived in France!!

I've experienced many winters of -40 C in Canada but I've never been as cold as I am now in Portugal. The lack of heating and insulation in homes here is brutal. I'm staying with friends and they all wear jackets and hats inside of their house and act like this is normal. Electric heaters can't be used a lot because electricity is crazy expensive. I can't believe this is a EU country. It's miserable and I can't wait to leave. It's a good place to come for a week in the summer but unless I was really rich I couldn't imagine living here in these conditions.

I decided to give a bit perspective from the north of the country(Porto). I dont find it particularly cold(well, its defenetely colder than the south), but when it comes to rains it sucks so much. Last year it was raining for a few months straight, like almost every day, even on Christmas and a new year. But what is even worse are the housing conditions. Many houses(mine uncluded) as you've told has no heating whatsoever. Again, in the north it sucks much more, because winters temperatures are lower. When it was +12 degrees last winter, we had +14 degrees inside even on a sunny side of our apartment(being on a sunny side only helps when there is a sun and not the constant raining). The only option is to use electric heaters that you buy yourself but for our apartment you still can't heat up all of the apartment due to its size. Last winter we ended up using heaters only for the room we work in and put up a lot of clothes to stay relatively warm. All in all I do appreciate local summer being much milder than Lisbon, but winters are harsh.

Same here in Hong Kong, it can still get quite chilly, sometimes as low as +5 and there is no central heating here. None of the buildings are insulated so if it's cold out it's cold inside. The problem is that people believe Hong Kong is jungle like Phuket but our winters are quite cool and unpredictable. Sure it can still be +30 in January but can also be +5 depending on the year

You talk about snow in the north as if it's common. Snow in Portugal only exists in small parts of Serra da Estrela, a remote area far away from Porto. Hard to ever see any negative temperatures there.

im sorry but that its not true at all.....there are a lot of regions with snow every single years....serra da estrela is not even in the north region.... I got negative temperatures every single year. search for beira alta region and tras-os montes. Cities like Guarda or Bragança are cold..Porto is not cold at all...
@CarlRodrig
@CarlRodrig 11 ай бұрын
There are negative temperatures in interior north and interior centre, like in Bragança, Vila Real, Guarda, Viseu, Covilhã, etc. Near de cost, in the litoral, in the most populated areas is a bit different. But the problem in the litoral is that rarely there is central heating. Even in many coffees and restaurants there is no heating, and the sensation is worst that in the coldest regions.

@@ThisisYulia Winters are not a little bit different than the north, but enormously. 2 different climates. Agreed, of course out of every 10 winters, maybe 2 are different, but in my experience winter in the Algarve gives between 15 and 20 degrees on average with a very nice and calm atmosphere. Last new years day i was on the terrace in my t-shirt enjoying the sun in 19 degrees. Incomparable with the north.
