I enjoyed seeing this movie as I do not remember previously seeing it even though I am now 67. Another good find for me on KZbin during the coronavirus lockdown even though it is more a soap opera version. It has so many actors from past TV shows and movies as it is now 41 years old. These were people from England and other parts of Europe who came across the ocean all because they had a grievance with their country hoping for something better. This revolution does not get pulled off without the help of Lafayette and France.

I finished watching Part one--"The Bastard"--by John Jakes. Well Done! Now I am watching this one. I cannot stop myself from laughing though, at the TEN GALLON Tricorn hat that actor Don Johnson is wearing! HOLY smokes, that has got to be the biggest Tricorn hat I have ever seen! Sometimes, it's all about the hat! LOL. I remember watching the directors commentary on a popular science fiction show--he made fun of his own production--he too was laughing about the character's ridiculous hat--soon he noticed the trend throughout the show, that all the characters had kind of weird funky hats. So I borrowed from him: "Sometimes, it IS about the hat." Now about the show: Excellent acting, writing, and use of history to tell a story. Fantastic! Thanks for sharing!!

Here we are almost 45 years after this mini series was shown on TV along with the other 2 segments titled "The Bastard" which came first, then this one "The Rebels", and the 3rd segment "The Seekers". This splendid 3 segment mini series should be shown in schools. At least some important events in history would be remembered by students getting caught up in the also entertaining storylines. Histrtorical facts & entertainment never changes. All 3 segments were full of brilliantly acted cast members, sensational costumes on the main stars plus regular cast members, the sets & all items used in these segments were accurate, plus all the made up stories were absolutely believable as if they were as solid as the facts from history. ...It's a pleasure watching these segments again after so many years when I watched them when they originally aired.

"Fairly well done"? The most friendly quote that could be said about this badly acted, badly directed, and with possibly the worst screen script ever seen. Camera hovers on an actor, cue comes in and they just start talking! Even that Doug McClure seems wasted in this. And I cannot believe that, at that time, the colonials could have "developed" the ugly American accent into the one used. There was one fact that rang true. When Adams stated he wanted a Republic, not a democracy, "can't trust the future of the country in the hands of the rabble", he was being very much the prophet of the present times. The GOP is determined to destroy the democratic USA, and leave the Republic USA in the hands of the multi-billionaires, the international conglomerates and the defence corporations, keeping the people as merely workers and consumers.

Thanks Jill - you are a gem for sharing with all of us The Bastard and The Rebels! I am carried away. I am a Skippy so I have never seen these down under. The Kent Chronicles would be worth reading, if there are no more videos to follow this one.

It is appalling the way the novel of John Jakes was so totally distorted and rewrote for this presentation. I read the entire 9 book series by John Jakes several times over in the past 4 years and was quite pleased with the way the first novel "The Bastard" was followed, but deeply disturbed by the flagrant disavowing of "The Rebels" actual writing by these so called adapters to turn this into a television series!!! Nothing like the book at all from the middle onward!!! So sad to see this presentation. And to rewrite John Jakes second novel in this set of wonderful books was quite distasteful to myself as a John Jakes fan!!!

I have just finished watching this film in which it makes me sad that American soldiers didn't wear military uniforms properly except officers. And America would not have been independent without France,s help ,which is only my personal opinion.

It's raining on Kent but the cut to the wagon is a sunny day! How coolizat? One of those weird weather phenomenon that's rarely been caught on video.

A british minister has a rebel son with a French actress - this is infamous & outrageous! I really need to have a word with the duchess 😣 of Kent - drastic reforms are in order 😂

The 5 minute resolution scene between Philip Kent and Mrs. McLean (3:02:37 - 3:07:37) is so well crafted and well acted that it comes off as entirely convincing. Philip's sincere concern for the widow gently disarms her as she slowly comes to understand that she will never have anyone else like him to mutually cherish the memory of Judson Fletcher.

1:10:23 Unlikely song in the sticks of NY... ""Amazing Grace" was written to illustrate a sermon on New Year's Day of 1773. It is unknown if there was any music accompanying the verses; it may have been chanted by the congregation. It debuted in print in 1779 in Newton and Cowper's Olney Hymns but settled into relative obscurity in England. In the United States, "Amazing Grace" became a popular song used by Baptist and Methodist preachers as part of their evangelizing, especially in the South, during the Second Great Awakening of the early 19th century." Wiki, but then they only had encyclopedias in 1979...

A little further information; John Newton wrote the song but we cannot be certain of the melody it was sung with. The current version did not get its melody until 1847. Prior to this date the song was sung with several different melodies. Newton, a reformed slave trader wrote the song from personal experience, about his conversion to Christianity.

the stories of Native Americans in the Civil War could use some telling.
@chasechristophermurraydola93142 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you on that especially the stories of Ely Parker and Stand Watie and these two native Americans fought on different sides with Parker serving with the union while Watie served with the confederates but both of them had amazing encounters and adventures like Parker would become an adjutant and secretary to general grant and he would even help draft the surrender documents for Robert Edward Lee and at the time of the surrender General Lee stared at Parker for a moment and he extended his hand and said” I am glad to see one real American here” And Parker replied saying” we are all Americans”. But while Parker was serving on the staff of General grant Watie was having his own adventures as he was the only Native American confederate general officer of the war and he would also be the last confederate states army general to surrender.
