The history of medieval Spain and the Reconquista continues. Asturias breaks up and becomes the Kingdom of Leon. Under her kings, the fight between Christianity and Islam continue. Gains are made, but then the War of Reconquest is held up in its tracks by the power of Umayyad Caliphate of Cordoba. However, even the great Caliph Abd al-Rahman III faces defeat at the hands of a Leonese King - Ramiro II.

I'm spanish but the music (too loud) should be medieval and not that repetitive spanish guitar or Carmen (Bizet), because it's absurd. An epic music would fit better, imho. A tactic vision of the battles (there were many) would be advisable as well., Anyway, good job 😄

Interesting fact, it was due to preserved Roman Knowledge and the presence of the Byzantine (Provinciae Spaniae) that the “islamic golden age” in Spain rose. Also there is an exaggeration about what muslims did according to the book and the interview about the author of “the myth of the andalusian paradise” which makes a lot of sense

@@FlashPointHx The douro valley can have a small BSk climate (semi arid) in some small parts but it’s mostly Csa (mediterranean climate) and the landscape would be mostly mediterranean oak forests with pastures and shrubland in the driest slopes. But, it was never sand desert AND palm trees are not native to Iberian Peninsula (only a shruby palm that occurs in southern coasts - Chamaerops humilis)! They are only planted in gardens on the milder cities. I'm sure it was dry and hard for agriculture, and assuming it was drier than normal it would first be a "steppe climate''- BSk,BSh. @@FlashPointHx You misunderstand Desert of the Duero thing. I study history at Asturias myself, and we've treated this point quite some times. It wasn't a desert because of the climate or the lack of water (as said before, mediterranean climate) but because the constant muslim raids kept the lands from being populated. Essentially, when Alfonso I reached the southern part of the mountains, he sacked muslim cities and brought the native christian population back to Asturias, leaving the cities between the Cantabrian Mountains and the central mountains of Spain virtually empty as a buffer zone. Again, not because of it being a desert, but because it was very vulnerable to sacking. Hell, Castile comes from "Castillo", castle, because the new settlers from Asturias had to fortify almost every population they created to have a defense against the raids.

see, this is what i was talking about before - when he talks about the myths of the dark age period from a christian perspective, he's rightfully skeptical about the usefulness of the sources. yet, he recounts silly, fanciful stories about swimming the euphrates without the slightest bit of critical analysis. to be clear: he should be deconstructing the islamic dark age myths the same way he's deconstructing the christian dark age myths, but he seems to have bought into it to an extent, in addition to making a conscious decision to give it a wide berth. and, maybe there's something to that - maybe, by approaching it with kid's gloves, he's let his guard down and fallen for some of it. he might think he's "showing respect" to a "foreign culture", but it just puts islam in a lower level of analysis, at the bottom of the academic hierarchy. if he's willing to do proper analysis for western history, he should be willing to proper analysis for islamic history, as well; that he won't is a lack of respect for their intelligence. it's a perfect, textbook example of orientalism.
