Ronan she wrote from the perspective of the mother of the boy Maya Thompson. She found Maya’s blog that she kept during and after Ronan’s fight with Neuroblastoma. Lyrics are taken from the blog, Maya is credited as co-writer. She only ever performed it twice, 1st on tv for stand up to Cancer Charity thing, and in 1989 with Ronan’s family in attendance. On KZbin there are videos with Maya Thompson talking about it

With the song Message In A Bottle, she has said in interviews before that she wanted Red to be more pop. And I think that this sounds like Sweeter Than Fiction which she made around Red era. I think that MIAB & STF are sisters that accent each other really well. I just wanted to point that out. Now she owns Red and it's pop under her vision. I really love that for her. 😌

I am in the same camp as you with Forever Winter. Such a beautifully poignant way to say "I see you struggling, I love you, you matter." And as someone who struggles with mental health, it's comforting to me, even though it wasn't written with me in mind. The heartbreaking story is that it's most likely about her high school friend who passed around the release of Speak Now. ❤

Forever Winter became one of my all time favourites after one listen too. It took me back to high school when one of my friends was planning to commit suicide but we stayed up with him all night talking and trying to get through to him that it wasn't his only option and how much he was loved. Thankfully he didn't end up doing it and he ended up happy and thriving. I have depression myself, my Dad fought it and we lost my uncle to suicide and it is devastating to everyone around you and as much as you think you are alone and no-one cares you're wrong. One of my favourite quotes is "Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem". If you reach out and ask for help you will be surprised who will turn up for you.

Taylor has said that there was a lot of songs over the years that she loved, but just didn't make it on an album. She wanted them to see the light of day but just wasn't sure in what way that would happen. So I think that's why she gave 'Better Man' to Little Big Town and 'Babe' to Sugarland. These songs were written for RED so it makes sense that she would record them herself this time around and put it on the Taylor's Version release since she wants to give us the Complete album this time around and doesn't care about it being too long.

Aaron Dessner produced the following tracks which is why there are some Folklore/Evermore parallels in the sounds. Better Man Nothing New I Bet You Think About Me Run She’s very particular about her melodies so I think the versions we’re getting are pretty close to what she had in mind when she initially wrote these songs. Enhanced production for sure which we love 🧣🍂

A fact about Message In a Botte: She sees writing songs as putting a message in a bottle and throw it to the ocean, the person may get it (hear the song) or may not so she's basically saying that all she can do is write a song about this person.

To answer your curiosity about nothing new sounding very folklore/evermore in style, I believe taylor said the vault tracks were her chance to do new spins on songs that were written a certain way in 2011/2012 but since no one had heard them, she could do what she wanted with them sonically. I one hundred percent believe these songs possibly sounded very different in their original demos, just like I think Taylor definitely added and cut out lines in all too well 10 minute version( I personally believe the last two minutes had more lyrics that she chose to cut out and use the repetitive fade out, as well as changing lyrics to fit her wider vocabulary and understanding and love for words)

Oh interesting. I interpreted the "then i'll cry myself to sleep" more as this idea that she paved the way for this young girl and now the young girl doesn't really understand the realities of what are about to hit her of being a woman in the music industry. I didn't think about it though that she wrote this at only 22.

@travisslade

Yeah, I think it’s about her insecurities of eventually being replaced. She eventually will meet the person who will replace her in the spotlight. She will be happy for her, especially because she led the way, but also bittersweet because she will eventually be replaced. Crying herself to sleep because of all the hard work she put in will be the building blocks for the next person.

about the demos of those songs, we only have a demo of Better Man from 2012 and Taylor sings it exactly the same way in re-recording. we don't have demos of other songs so we can't really tell, there definitely have been changes in production (maybe subtle, but still) but I believe she still tries to keep them at least somewhat close to originals

Better Man should of definitely been for her to keep back in 2012 and been on the album. I think probably the best song on Red TV. And I'm so glad to have the same thoughts about Message In a bottle. I can definitely bop to it when I'm in the mood, but it's probably my least favorite. It feels teeny boppy in my mind, definitely like a super girly pop song that doesn't make me think Taylor at any point in her whole catalog haha. And I haven't watched this whole video yet, but The Very First Night is amazing. It's upbeat and fun, but definitely much more of a favorite on Red TV. I hope you like it too 😅😅 Also want to say I always love watching Taylor swift content from you. I always feel like I'm having a listening party with a friend and I always have such a good time. 🙌🏻

Period Better Man is one of my favorite songs by her I prefer her version over the way Little Big Town sang it I think when a singer sings something they wrote though you hear the emotion

Taylor said she was deciding between All Too Well and Better Man when making the tracklist. She's also said that she wasn't sure if people would appreciate All Too Well because it was so personal and specific to her, so maybe she thought the same thing for Better Man?

Better Man. That song. When Little Big Town released it…it nauseated me lol. I say that lovingly. Just my life circumstances at that moment made it so hard to stomach but god, it was so good. Now here we are a few years later, & I have Taylor’s version on at top volume as I drive around town singing along at the top of my lungs. Tears still happen every damn time, but god….it’s so good. One of those very few “perfect” songs that exist, I think,

She wrote Better Man and Babe for Red in 2011/2012. She offered them to Little Big Town, and Sugarland, respectively, because she was a fan of their music, because she wanted the songs to be heard, AND BECAUSE SHE DOES NOT REPEAT ERAS. Both were on the radio; both got music videos; both won awards. iirc, Taylor won Song of the Year at the CMA's in 2017, the year she released Reputation. In her documentary, she says specifically -- anything that doesn't make it to the final album is ordinarily left behind. As far as Deluxe Tracks, these are'nt the ones that didn't make the cut. She is kind of unique that way. She plans for releasing extra tracks in the Asian market because music is very expensive there. Her Aussie or Japan versions have promotional singles not on the original release; she used to release the singles in the US on the Deluxe versions for Target / Walmart about a year into the cycle (which triggers new sales of her physical albums and cd's.) That is, _after_ she does at least one tour swing through Asia.

I LOVE message in a bottle!!! But I see what you mean! It’s a pop song, but it’s definitely not like 1989 pop! Still a fun song in my opinion! 😁

She wrote Babe for the Red album originally, then gave it to Sugarland in 2018 and featured on it. They are also signed to Big Machine so it makes sense for her to rerecord the song, they've been supportive of it though

Yes ! Better Man is really great. This song WON Best Song of the Year for CMA Awards 2017. The lyrics of this song is simple BUT very powerful...full of emotions. Heartbreaking song

Your thought at the start of The Veryg First Night was me when I first listened to I Bet You Think About Me....I swore I had heard that song before. Maybe we just both had prophetic dreams with those songs in them....

Better Man won song of the year at the CMAs and nominated for best country song at the Grammy’s that year, and it definitely played on the radio a lot!! Taylor gave the song to Little Big Town to perform because she thought their harmonies would sound good with the song. There’s a live version of Taylor performing it at Bluebird cafe and it’s sooo good.
