Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! In a not so surprising scenario it appears the Reddit blackout in regards to their API pricing is failing both through mods failing to uphold their strike and the site admins implementing policies on removing striking moderators. Truly wild stuff on the Internet. Thanks for watching!

This is random, but I help run a decently sized Facebook group that had problems with the worst power mad mod ever in its early days. Long story short, one time she went a step too far and told someone they couldn't call themselves an aspie, despite actually being Autistic (iirc Asperger's is a dated term now, but it wasn't then) and banned him while being the most malicious little shit about it, as she always was. That's basically where I came in, and roasted her so hard I got a mod spot in the end. She laugh reacted it before losing mod and rage quitting so I know she saw it at least, that's probably how she found out she got her shit revoked. -Long story short -Proceeds to tell long story 😆 Might as well finish it, anyway that poor guy didn't feel comfortable rejoining afterwards despite our assurances 😞 I like to think I'm a good modmin, when I even bother to deal with the drama side of things. I mainly just deal with join requests because we get a ton and it piles up quickly. We were only at 7,000 members around then, and mainly a tag group at the time. After the civil war, our mods are now all college educated successful people, except my white trash ass who totally can't relate to those people, but I guess I also offer a different perspective. It's a normie group with over 50,000 members now, and most of them will never know the group has _lore_

It was honestly so obvious. The main users of the site are people with shitty attention spans who default to the site after 10 seconds with nothing to do, and people coming from Google searches or for porn. The average person doesn't care about the API changes and just wants to see the subreddits again. The entire thing is a very first world problem and people have other shit going on in their lives. The controversy will pass, it will get brought up every now and then but everything will return to normal soon. If anything the only W is drawing attention to how little influence the unpaid jannies for the site have. I always found it sad people will dedicate so much time into a site for free and such little respect... touch grass and let Reddit do it themselves.

The best way to actually protest a site like reddit is to leave it. If both the moderators and visitors go to another forum, that actually hits reddit's advertising revenue and any of the pretend awards people buy. But that would require money to make a new forum for a given subreddit, host it, and moderate it (maybe). Basically people are going to be too lazy and / or poor/stingy to actually be effective in a boycott.
@lMchMyersl
@lMchMyersl Жыл бұрын
You really think nobody realized that? Forcing the admin's hand is the whole point. Moderation is a moronic task, but one that can cost a lot of money to reddit should they be forced to no longer rely on free labour. If the admin's are forced to remove mods, the blackout worked.

What do you think would have happened if there wasn't an end date, you think the people in charge of reddit just would have never thought of replacing the reddit mods at that point? The failed protest isn't on the sub mods, it's on the average users. Mods were fucked either way. Protest with no end date, mods get replaced and reddit returns to normal. Mods end the protest and reddit returns to normal. Protest with no designated end date, mods get replaced and reddit returns to normal. The users are the ones with the power over reddit. If the mods reinstated the subreddits, but the users still protested, then reddit would be fucked. This isn't a problem of mods placing an end date, it's a problem of users not following through with a protest.

Yeah, I personally take a position similar to that of r/spain on the blackouts. I hate reddit administration as much as the next guy, and they have made it incredibly hard for moderators to volunteer for their communities as well as being unresponsive to user complaints, but I don't really support the business model of Apollo and I think that rallying behind them is a pretty poor decision. I don't like the idea of a third party app being able to offer a de facto premium version of the platform without ads, charge users for it, and turn a profit because they didn't have to foot the enormous bills related to maintaining the site. It's morally questionable for the same reason that youtube reaction channels are morally questionable. Not to mention, Reddit has already said from before the blackouts even started that accessibility and moderation-related services were largely exempt from the changes to the API pricing.

We've all come across moderators who abuse their powers because they can and that crap ends up killing communities. The people who don't want any power usually end up being the best moderators, especially if those people are generally lazy and reluctant to take any significant action unless required to.

Here's the thing, I think most people have forgotten about this but putting in software that actively prevents third party use violates anti-trust laws, when I say people have forgotten what I mean is people forgot that Microsoft used to be way bigger, and if things had stayed that way the current tech landscape would be very different. They were broken up into smaller components because they actively put code into windows that prevented the use of third party applications forcing anyone using windows to use Microsoft programing, violating anti-trust, essentially they monopolized use. A lot of these companies, Reddit, Apple, Amazon, etc. are doing this now, and not even trying to hide it, and yet nothing is being done about it, why... because they don't want to go to court and have this become something the supreme court can rule on because they know they'll lose. So they bully smaller groups and they appease larger ones, groups with a form of backing of their own that could take them to court. The bust way to compete with this is to attempt what Reddit did and come together as a group, but simply acting as an idea would never be enough, and I know what I'm about to say is going to piss some people off, but any group that wants to put pressure and a company needs to Unionize. Streamers, KZbinrs, any media group like this needs to act together so that the company can't just push them around, sports have it and they force their specific league to negotiate and Collectively Bargain. These companies are so good ate making people look at each other as competition they forget that what's good for one is usually good for all. I can't say unpaid people at Reddit should unionize, but I've been seeing too much bullying by the companies running things lately at least Reddit tried to push back, what's your guys excuse.

I'm not an active redditor myself. But it's mind-boggling to me that so many people are pretty much cheering on a move that will kill any 3rd party app. Including in the comment section of your previous video but also other comment sections on KZbin and Reddit. It's not like users gain anything from NOT having access to third-party clients. Users can only gain from having choices. If their experience using third-party app is more streamlined and more enjoyable than using the official app shouldn't we celebrate this freedom of choice. After all it doesn't worsen other people's experience. Eliminating 3rd party apps also eliminates incentives for Reddit to improve their own apps. In an environment where there is free choice of clients the way Reddit could convince users to change over to their official app is by improving the app. By removing 3rd party apps this incentive is no longer present, like what are you gonna do, not browse Reddit, yeah that's not how things work for active users. Third-party apps also don't generate any extra cost to Reddit. API calls that a 3rd party app would do any official apps would also have to do, maybe on the specific endpoint is different but the cost will stay the same. Unless of course that app is poorly optimized, but Apollo's request count for instance seems to be on par with the official app. They may of course be ad free but the revenue they could get from ads is nowhere close to the amount they are charging for the API. It's also not like there would have been no other way of pricing this. API access could have been tied to Reddit Gold, including maybe a 10k request limit per month to deter bots which could be priced differently. But as it stands these prices are horrendous. They are completely out of proportion. This move is supposedly to target the Large Language Model AI scrapers, to earn money from those. But these are prices that mainly affect the common user which will not be able to use the API for third-party apps and alike anymore. The large AI companies have the money to pay and will probably do so. This is profiting from AI companies at the cost of screwing over users.

1:00 I don't know if you are learning this at school, but this is normal strike behavior. First there is a warning strike to signalize that you are willing to strike about the hole situation. This is most of the time just for one or two days. If they got the massage and the situations gets better, there will be not a second strike. But if they ignore it, than there will be a second normale strike. "The only difference between a warning strike and a "real" strike is that it is not preceded by a final breakdown of negotiations or a strike ballot. Whereas the purpose of a "real" strike is to enforce a collective agreement, the purpose of a warning strike is merely to demonstrate the general willingness to strike." from DGB, a german legal protection insurance.

Reddit moderators backing down so quickly is just hilarious knowing their small amount of power with the free labor they provide is on the line is honestly just stupidly hilarious. That being said allowing users to vote moderators in and out I think is a great feature, would have been great a long time ago. I remember some communities where there are owners who haven't even gotten onto and interacted with said community for years despite still being on Reddit doing other things. I think that feature is great. Get rid of power hungry mods with your vote. That being said as just a regular user. The blackout has been pretty annoying since I like to use it for news on games I play. Reddit is absolutely right when they say most regular users do not care cause we don't even you're aware of that. Yeah their API change is the dumbest thing in the world, but this does not actually effect most users. Let's be real, Reddit wouldn't have let a few of the accessibility apps live on if they thought they could cram it into the app in a few months time. They probably decided that it's less risky for them (and a bit of good PR) if they let one or two live on. Even the help article about the bot api usage evaluation is annoyingly vague: is it that hard to name the bots that were found to be over the free api calling option? But hey, Reddit sure is hellbent on that api cost deadline, so it looks like it's time to watch if that train of promises crashes and burns like many of their previous promises.

Touching grass and breathing fresh air was too much for the Reddit mods. They need to get plugged back into the Reddtrix 😂😅

Muta has clearly never seen strikes in Europe, I got caught up by a rail strike in the UK where they had to give 1 month's notice of how long the strike would be and what day it would be (alternating days for one week)

Yeah as someone strongly supporting the protest I knew from the start there would be no change. The only hope now is for Huffman to get ousted if the company starts to tank.
