I had to get help with certain things because of constant arm surgeries. it sucked. I couldn't imagine even needing this. all I needed was the basics. this story is just ridiculous and abusive.

Serial killers have said they had normal childhoods and seemed to honestly believe it, but when they describe the childhood any sane person says 'that's not normal!' But it's all they knew, they weren't aware something else was going on for other people. all kids assume everyone else is getting the same thing at home that they are unless shown otherwise. And once you're into adulthood it's incredibly hard to face that something was wrong with how you were raised even if you start to catch on. (I'm in my 30s and only just began to understand/face that I was groomed my whole childhood by my father. I had, until then, thought I had a good close relationship with him. The most plausible explanation I can think of for why he’d leave so abruptly and never post the research is that most likely, the researcher helped him realize the incest was WAY more traumatic than he initially assumed. He was fourteen. That shit will scar you for life and some people repress the worst of the trauma.
@discardedsushi86953 жыл бұрын
Im not even understanding why the researcher wanted to add a non consenting relationship to his research??? If they want to research on positive incest cases then do it between two consenting adults- For all we know this dude could have been groomed into thinking it was okay.
@stopmakingeyesatme12903 жыл бұрын
Having worked in academia, I actually think the most likely reason is that the paper didn't get published. Researchers conduct the research before submitting for publication. I think it's likely that the study didn't produce a result that was statistically significant in any way, or else didn't produce enough insights for a journal to consider it worth publishing. And I mean this from a scientific perspective, not from a general interest one. I think we're used to the idea that stories like this always get published because they get clicks, but the standard for research papers is much different.
@Arualiaa3 жыл бұрын
@@stopmakingeyesatme1290 ...I hadn’t even thought about that possibility. You’re right, and given that this case is leagues away from the supposed subject of study - non-traumatic incest cases, which this isn’t by definition because a minor can’t give consent - maybe the results became muddled by anecdotic evidence. Not really sure, I’m not in the field of psychology or sociology.

Is it bad that I feel like he might just not give a shit about this, even today?
@jdohma71343 жыл бұрын
@@stopmakingeyesatme1290 This was my thought too. I’ve never done psych research. I’m from a biology/medicine background. So, I also wonder if there might be some ethical issues with such a paper. I imagine following ethical protocols is difficult when studying such behavior. I mean, I have to go through IRB red tape just to take blood from consenting adults for research purposes. Even talking about incest could be very traumatic for the victims, and yes this guy was a victim.
@xaesalyszimpkee3 жыл бұрын
I love the idea of 'non traumatic incest' because THERE IS NO SUCH THING (with large age differences/power dynamics, peer aged can be different) Maybe your flight or fight responses weren't tripped. Maybe you felt safe in the environment. Maybe you were around people you felt comfortable with. But those circles are not supposed to intersect. It WILL have affects on this development and perspectives on things. Sure, it's not as terrifying as rape, but trauma can still happen under the radar and be window dressed as something normal or natural. Some of the worst trauma is the stuff you never truly realized how much it hurt you because you were completely obvious. It's like kids who were raised in cults who finally get out. They felt 'happy' In their cult. It didn't feel like a cult. They felt they belonged and had a good life. When they were brought back to reality, sudden they recognize all that was truly wrong. Oblivion and Ignorance are bliss. To add, making it sound clinical is the best way to get them introduced to it without fear. They're scared when they go to the dentist. They're scared when they go to the doctor. But they understand that something clinical is to help them and they should ease their nervousness and let it happen for the good of them. Once you have that foot in the door you can do a lot after that. It's grooming. Whether they realize it or not. But the fact that she hid it from the father, shows she knew shame. And the fact he didn't tell anyone shows he had shame.
@peachy_lili3 жыл бұрын
if it was real, you can't deny she's an awful person for not considering he'd have to keep that secret from his future partners FOREVER if he ever got out of that fucked up situation. that would weigh on a person IMO… there's no way to get out of that situation unscathed

Agreed, and I find it HIGHLY suspect that the researcher in question works in the field of child psychology. Kid-related jobs are, after all, notorious for attracting nonces. Shock and adrenaline are great things! Once nearly ripped my entire left knee apart while downhill mountain biking and smashing my kneecap between two rocks which had roughly the space half the width of my kneecap between them ... stood up, brushed the dirt away, took my bike and walked home 10km, getting into the shower, cleaning the OBVIOUS wound and then going to sleep ... went to the doctor the next day as it was 'starting to hurt a little bit' xD EDIT: Tendons, ligaments and muscles were all still okay but kind of jumbled up inside the kneejoint, no obvious fractures either on xray, didn't get surgery and took about 6 to 8 weeks to be 'fine' again, only have some pain in my left knee from time to time and a scar that's pretty much the size of my knee cap on my knee, happened ~24 years ago

My guess would be that the lighthearted reaction has more to do with the son's willingness and enthusiasm, as well as his lack of regret up to the point of writing the post, that made people view him as less of a victim. It's not like he was pressured into it or felt conflicted, and also he was at an age where many people start having sex anyway (albeit with people their own age). I'm not saying it was right or that he truly did consent, but the average person, and especially Reddit bros, will not look at it the same way. As for patriarchy, yes that is a contributing factor for obvious reasons, but we also should acknowledge that women and most men generally do not care about men regardless of how vulnerable they appear to be, and I view that as being (in part) a distinctly separate issue from the patriarchal mindset.

Where people would belittle people that were (rightfully) horrified and disgusted by the story, by saying they weren't accepting enough and taboos were just social constructs put in place by silly things like "religion." I'm glad Whang and others also find it just as disturbing now. But you also forgot to mention the fact that this person had a significant other that was fairly serious and they planned to eventually marry. Someone asked if he had told her and he said no. When asked if he would ever disclose that, he said no, never. But people thought that was pretty worrying considering if they have kids, that mother would potentially unknowingly be leaving her children to be babysat by grandma and grandpa who had absolutely no issues with abusing their own son sexually.

I once broke both arms. Cannot wipe, cannot bathe, cannot eat normally, cannot anything. My mother just told me to stop being a pussy and deal with the mess. She would not lift a finger to help me at all, let alone do this shit.
@oldgold82474 ай бұрын
So how did you wipe? Get a homie to do it? Use your feet?
@Nedread3 жыл бұрын
I just looked into the thread, and one of the WIERDEST replies from the Broken Arm Guy was in reply to someone asking how his fatherwas okay with this. His response, was (and I quote): "He just was. They are both very open. I wasn't a threat. *He got off on it to talking about it with my mom.*" BRUH. This family has PROBLEMS (IMO).

we can all think of a bazillion alternative ways to deal with such a problem, thats exactly what makes this story fucked up. rarely are stories of people making reasonable choices that get passed around, what would be the point? its its out-of-the-box (in this case the box being ethical decency) problem-solving (or in this case problem-making and serial problem-ignoring) that give it value.

Bet they were both extremely uncomfortable with it. Frankly if that happens to me, I would hire a nurse to bathe me while I'm in recovery. Don't need them for anything else, they can just pop in for a half hour every day.

This is grooming, the slow escalation is grooming, the suggestion is grooming, the mother taking advantage of the situation was grooming. This is all literally grooming and abuse. I really hope that person’s parents belong in jail. I hope OP worked with a therapist for a lot longer than the research project because I guarantee there is unresolved trauma.
