Date stamping of food became law in 1978 in Australia. If the food was imported into Australia and it didn’t have a date stamp the importer was required to add it.

These things used to turn up in tearooms all over Melbourne around January. They'd get put out around about 1000, and still be there at stumps at the end of the day, one or two slices taken out of it. Doesn't happen these days, because us skips finally got wise. I once had one of those slices. It has the sort of texture that would, with a little Morning Fresh, probably be good for washing the dishes.

I'm a full blown aussie and I just discovered them last year when an Italian coffee shop down the road got some in for Christmas. I got one for something different because it looked fancy. I got another one today because that first year I just about ate the whole bloody thing by myself because it was delicious and nobody else wanted any when I went back home for Christmas. Now the missus and I said it should be a tradition that we get one (or two) every year around Christmas.
