I am 29 years clean from an 8 yr crack addiction. I attended NA, graduated after a year of in patient rehab at one of the toughest programs in the city, was incarcerated at every jail in the county (5) except for one as well as the exact prison that you went to as well as Chuckawalla state prison. Still relapsed after all that. One day I realized that I will never beat this addiction alone. Never. That's the day I sincerely called on God. I spoke to him and simply said, "I can't do this without your help. If for some reason it turns out that you're not who I was always taught that you are, I cannot be responsible for what happens next". I said this after a 7 day run as I was laying on my mom's floor while she looked on with pity in her eyes. I got up from that floor and turned myself in to a 10 day detox program suggested to me by my PO, whom my mom had called once she knew I had relapsed. After that little program, I've never looked back. No urges, nothing. God heard me and delivered me on the spot! No sponsor, no meetings. Nothing. From there I just relied on all the tools I gained from all those programs related to avoiding familiar people places and things, and poured myself into work until I was strong enough to walk through a crack house if necessary without blinking. I did however maintain my relationship with God and pray regularly. That's how i beat the demon of addiction.

Fuck, im ten years clean of being an acholic, i think about drinking everyday but hearing people like you get me back to reality and i know one drink would probably send me over the edge, i know a lot of people who have quit but staying clean is tougher than most common people know! It's not as simple as just quitting!

True that!! I never enjoyed drinking but drugs, especially heroin or any strong opioids pulled me in badly. Methadone is only thing that's helped me stay off the bullshit and get life back together. Congrats on the decade clean, I hope you keep it up!!

It really is though. I’m a recovered meth/opiate/benzo/alcoholic…. They call me a poly substance abuser because at the time I really didn’t care as long as I wasn’t sober. They told me all kinds of things…. Trying to put the fear of death into me but it didn’t work, nothing worked…. Until one day I hit bottom, nearly died, and through a miracle of God was given a second chance. That was seven years ago…. When it all happened they drug tested me at the hospital and I failed for like 10 substances off of their 12 panel test…. I went on a bender that week, big time. Anyways so after that happened, I looked at myself in the mirror one day and it just all clicked…. Like “holy shit, they are right…. I really am gunna kill myself.” That was the first moment that I truly believed that my lifestyle of drugs and booze was gunna be the end of me. Before that moment I was in so much utter denial that I would laugh and mock people who told me that. That was the first step in putting my life back together. Now, 7 years later I just have to keep reminding myself that the little voice in my head that says it’s okay to use…. Is a fucking lying cocksucker who needs to shut the fuck up. Usually it takes a few minutes and the urges pass and I go on with my day. That’s the only thing you need to remember is anytime you catch yourself trying to rationalize shit stop what you are doing, correct the toxic addict line of thinking, and move on with your day. Brutal self examination and unwavering honesty is what will keep you clean. God bless

Mike needs to be a regular on here , very interesting person with great communication skills… it’s like he has two sides to himself & one is extremely smart and thriving while the other is trying to remain loyal to something that’s holding the other back. He’s optimistic & seems realistic, with that said I wish him well while the best side ultimately wins. Bring him back I’ll stay tuned

Yup Mark should bring him back like he did Eric Portis. I think all Mike needs is another chance and someone to believe in him! I think if he had love around him and support he will have the strength to fight his addiction and this time he won't relapse. I see the desire and the hunger in his eyes to fight his addiction. I'm actually watching Extractors now it was a great show. B

It broke my heart to have him say he relapsed and he’s still there.. sometimes you might think the second time is easier, but really often it isn’t. Knowing what it takes to do it all over again, taking the first step and thinking of change as the forever story is hard. I wish him all the best, he is such an energizing person, and I know he could still help many more people

Mike, I'm pulling for you! Your story is amazing! Your wife should've been your support system. She lost on life. Life is up and down all over. Sept 4, I'll be 7 years clean from opiates. The 12 steps didnt help me much. I went to behavioral therapy. I learned what opiates did to my brain. I also learned from my psychiatrist the exact day i became an addict. I was in the hospital on life support from an appendectomy gone wrong. My operation was April 17, 1978. May 1st, 1978 i came off life support, but i was still in bad shape. The doctor asked if i wanted something for pain. I thought it was going to be tylenol. It was demerol. I was 13 years old and every 4 hours I was fussing for my shot!

Mike, we might have played a little pickup ball at the 12th St City center gym in Oakland while you were living in the bay area. You were a fierce dude on the court (if recollection serves me right). I sense you’ve also wielded that same ferocity and determination on whatever you’ve set out to do in life. For better or worse. Have you ever thought about picking up the rock and balling again? I come from a similar youth background as you and ball was always my drug of choice, and it remained that way until I hung up the sneakers a few years back. As you know there is an incredible euphoria, comradery, and negative energy release/positive energy gain to be found in ball with the fellows. Still looks like you could get out there and chop it up a little, my friend!

I had a 10-year crack addiction..1999-2009..... ..I can so relate to the part when ur ready to quit. And Satan throws a big rock at you.... Or you find a bag of money... I left the city and moved back to my hometown.. crack changed my life I lost everything.. I'm so grateful God has given me a place to live... And when I say given ...it's exactly what I mean it was given to me... After 10 years of being cocaine free...living in a camper...God gave me a home.. the spirit world is real!!! And they are invested in each and everyone of us..God and the angels are there to help and protect...and Satan and his workers are looking for any little crack(no pun intended) to wedge in. Just like when things are going great the person you always wanted to smoke a rock with appears on the side of the road... I'm going to add this...if I took a hit right now..before I exhaled there would be demons touching me..I KNOW THIS... the thot terrifies me.

Heartbreakingly powerful interview thank you Mike. Felt a little deflated though at 44 minutes in when interviewers lack of understanding took Mike off his powerlessness share, by interviening with the comments around the "break up of his parents marriage at 12 and this creating low self worth being the cause" it really isnt true. Of course It may contribute to the problem we have but it really isn't the cause. I know many addicts who come from 2 parent loving homes and are just as powerless. I am sending so much love Mike, thank you for your service in sharing this and letting everyone know there is a solution 💚

I moved from Oregon to California to get away from drugs. Came to Florida gained 3 felonies. Used for 6 years. Lost my car became homeless lost my great job. It took me 6 years to decide I'm done and got clean. Since last year I have been clean relapsed for a month then once for a couple weeks then the last time I relapsed for one day then never touched it again.

You’ve lived an interesting life. Hope you’re clean again. Fentanyl is getting mixed into every other street drug. You’re playing Russian Roulette with your life. I wish you the best outcome, it’s challenging, but love yourself. Get out that dark hole. You’re highly intelligent enough to have everything all back. You’re fortunate in that aspect.

Why on earth do you capitalize almost every word? I'm not trying to be an asshole, but you may want to attend some writing classes before offering to write anyone's story. The odd capitalizations, the lack of grammar/punctuation, etc., makes it painful to even read 2 sentences, let alone an entire story.

Great story. Mark, I think an interesting person to interview is a guy by the name of Tyke Peacock. Had the world at his feet and it all came crashing down, then recovery. He as an extraordinary athlete. Once was co-holder of the American high jump record. Also was a real good basketball player- I think he would have made pro if not for the problems- and maybe even an Olympic medal in the high jump. He has a real story.

This story isn’t adding up: 1) How was Michael Baker O’Connor Sr. born in Dublin, Ireland, yet heir to the Colgate-Palmolive fortune? Colgate-Palmolive was founded in the U.S. by Americans. So, how was great-great granddad an American but his descendants Irish immigrants? 2) I could find absolutely nothing on a Raymond Manning O’Connor being Vice President of Universal Pictures. And even if such a person existed, you mean to tell me he was born, married, and had children in Ireland, then emigrated to the U.S. at that grown age to become Vice President of one of the largest film studios in the world? 3) How did Michael Baker O’Connor Sr., allegedly already disinherited by his father, go from living with his wife and son in a Los Angeles ghetto on 29th and Normandie, to living with them on Lania Lane in Coldwater Canyon? By being a successful musician? And why did the family once again fall into abject poverty after he and his wife divorced? Where was the spousal and child support? 4) Raymond Manning O’Connor could not have disinherited his son, Michael Baker O’Connor, and prevented him from getting his share of the Colgate-Palmolive fortune. The money wasn’t his to give or take away because the will or trust would have been in the name of Diggery O’Connor, allegedly one of the founders of the company. The money would not have gone through Raymond Manning O’Connor anyway. Even if he did withhold or attempt to withhold his son’s inheritance, Michael Baker O’Connor could have easily sued and gotten his money. 5) I couldn’t find Michael Baker O’Connor Jr.’s name on IMDB under any of the TV shows he mentioned. There was a Michael O’Connor on an episode of Charmed. That’s it. I believe he was an actor and probably an athlete. I also think he is one of a few people who’ve been on this channel who is a teller of tall tales.

For all you advantages in life, and all your I was a great.baskeyball player, I was an actor, had all these famous "friends", you are living on skid row. That's on you. I've lived in poverty. Had my water, lights and gas turned off, but never turned to drugs or alcohol to fix my ills. I never wanted anyone's pity. I worked had to pull myself up to be successful. Lived with depression, but made no excuses to use any substances, again worked on myself and made a life for myself and son. Never lived in affluency, always working class. I realize bad things happen in life but we make choices and those.choices can make or break us. Good luck. FYI, I'm a 72 year old woman who's still fighting the good fight to live my best life.
