What are your thoughts on the Tissot PRX? A Tribute, Homage or a Rehash? Something to add: I believe the Original PRX name stood for Precision - Reliable - Ten (X meaning 10 meters of water resistance back then) Today the modern PRX is rated at 10Atm or 100 Meters.

Absolutely love my Automatic PRX with the blue waffle dial. But what catches my eye the most is how light plays off the indices, whether indoors under artificial lights, or outdoors in the sun, light flashes off the indices in a brilliant sparkle that captures the light. Love this channel. No watch snobbery, no being lead by current fashions or other KZbin “influencers” but a really solid understanding of both the history of watchmaking and how design trends inside and outside the horological world have helped shape the look of great and not so great watches. The PRX is a shining example of how to make a desirable but still affordable piece that is both retro and yet timeless. I must get round to adding one to my collection soon!

I have only owned diver, flieger and field oriented watches. The additional function and archetypal history kind of gets me. I was on holiday in Istanbul 2 weeks ago when I saw the Prx. I never considered it, but i asked to put it on and just bought it. While being the lowest priced piece in my collection i actually think it’s great and will keep it. The bracelet is great (half links helped me get it perfect and being brushed it doesn’t catch wear&tear), the case and proportions are spot on, clean dial, movement is -2 (beat error perfect), SPOT ON. And i don’t feel it’s an exaggerated niched “integrated-genta”, It’s just a good looking watch. Thank you for the stellar content again! Gilt Smith’s is on my list!

I own the 35mm quartz and agree with everything you said. I don't consider it being quartz a knock, even though some watch snobs may scoff at that. It makes the case thinner, it's true to the original, has a more original dial instead of the derivate waffle dial of the auto, and overall is more reliable and accurate. I love the PRX. I bought the brushed silver with gold hands/indicies - in quartz. In its P'matic form it's very much a 'greatest hits' design (as you said) taking the best elements of many of the best icons of the style. In quartz guise it's pretty much a straight up Oysterquartz copy. Somehow that made it even more appealing to me! There is something about this watch - in fact it's the thing that I like about it the most, is how a quartz PRX is symbolic of both the blow that put the Swiss watch industry *into* the ICU and the style of watch that created a path *out* of it. And it pays homage to a watch that is the product of a moment when the mighty Crown buckled and deviated from its established methodology (can you imagine that now? A solar Explorer anyone?). In any case - I love the story this watch tells and if you are going to own one Swiss quartz watch, this is a great choice.

Greatest Hits, nicely said Anthony. And y'know what's crazy? I'm feeling very drawn to Oysterquartz... there's something so charming about them... or maybe it's because when I met James Dowling a few months ago he let me check out his perpetual calendar hahaha! I cannot disagree with any of your comments in this video IDGuy. When the PRX launched I wasn't that bothered with all the hype even though I have a few Tissot watches and I still wear them. It was only when I was at the AD looking at another watch (I can't remember which one) that if I recall was not purchased that I spotted the PM80 blue dial in the flesh. I asked to have a look at it and to be honest I was gob smacked by the quality of the finish for the price not that I've had any issue with Tissot finishing. I tried it on and the deal was done. It's slim, very comfortable, stylish, affordable (comparing to the options in this video) and available. The original was released in my mid teens and I remember the ads for it. I've had mine for ~9 months or more and I smile (possibly out of nostalgia I dunno) as it once again goes on the wrist instead of another watch that cost a fair bit more. It's not my daily watch but it could easily fit the bill for most days. This design has already aged to the point where to me it has already become a modern usable classic.

@@anthonysmith2982 Yes, I think so. Especially since more "elegant" watch brands like Cartier are being heavily marketed as watches that can be "casually" worn with a t-shirt and jeans. Although I favor the Genta-designed Nautilus over the Royal Oak (again, I have a soft spot for square-ish cases/dials), I do acknowledge the historical and horological significance of the Royal Oak considering when it was released. Immitation may be the most sincerest form of flattery, but I do agree that this design has been "adopted" to death; even cheap fashion watches have their own Royal Oak-inspired models. Genta designed a watch that, unbeknownst to him, would become so timeless and iconic that other brands, big or small, couldn't help wanting to ride that train. I could also make some parallels with the Glock striker-fired pistol (I first became aware of this gun when I saw "Die Hard 2"). Nowadays many of the major firearms manufacturers have their own Glock-inspired models with tweaks in design here and there. Until then I'll just wait for a Nautilus-esque Tissot (or whichever brand) to release a model for under a grand. Cheers 🍺

I think you got it right: there's no one factor that makes a watch a success. Tissot managed to get everything right in one watch: design (case and dial both), quality, and of course price. I think the fact that it has the essential good looks of the design, without the ostentation, is also a big factor in its popularity. It says that while you have the good taste to appreciate a 222, you have the good sense not to buy one. The same combination of factors is behind the Moonswatch phenomenon. Keen to hear your thoughts on the chronograph version as well. Do you think it dilutes the simplicity and affordable charm of the watch, or does it complete the one-two punch against the more expensive players?
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
I was so close to including the chrono in this talk but I thought it would've taken the attention away from the "standard" models, y'know? It's hard to say what I feel about the chrono. It does play a bit too hard on the typical configuration (with a panda dial etc) But I must say, it's awesome seeing how "casual" it comes across. Definitely a good jab from the brand (another fantastic movement) honestly, ETA chrono's are banging. And another brilliantly priced model all things considered.

I think in many ways all watches, top end etc have a homage in one way or another. If they say they don't then they are fibbers.

There's a saying today that nothing is truly original and it's true in a lot of ways. Inspiration always has to come from somewhere and well said Nick! There always has to be a reference point ;)

For me the key to this watch is the bracelet. I own the two tone auto. This dial is nice but the star is the bracelet. In the pics the links look very flat and boring. One piece with simple brushing. IRL it glitters as you roll your wrist. Very unexpected for a uniformly brushed bracelet. Been eyeing it online for a long time. As soon as I saw one at a jeweler I immediately had to have it.
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
I've seen some amazing shots of the bracelet on the wrist and the bracelet works so nicely. Funny story, but I experienced a very special (prototype) Oysterquartz in the sun and the bracelet is exactly the same (with chunkier links) They play so beautifully in the light... Ah, I should be getting one of these pieces for a fix BUT I'm kinda patiently waiting for a Salmon dial ;) Thanks for sharing Jeremy!

Bit naughty showing the Zenith as a homage as Genta was probably heavily influenced by the Zenith A3642, Probably why it only took him minutes to design

Watches with intergrated bracelets aren’t for me. Had a RO and sold it. Just didn’t look and feel right for me. Not saying it isn’t beautiful to look at. The PRX is in my opinion one of the best looking watches in this category. Of course not taking the PP, the new gold 22 and AP into account. But for me this beat most other intergrated bracelet watches hands down.
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
And funny thing Theo, I was keen on the Genta styles around 2015 - 2017. Even recently getting hand's on with a group of these pieces now, they just arent as exciting as they used to be, y'know? Maybe it's just because we've seen them so many times now. And it's pretty cool seeing how this PRX manages to give the finger to these bigger brands in a way BUT that all Gold 222... wow... Vacheron is the brand to look at this year...

Which brand jubilee bracelet did you go for on the Smiths Everest? Looks ace IDGuy and a little chunkier than the Silver Jubilee Smiths bracelet version
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mike! Funny enough, it was an aftermarket I found on eBay years ago, probably as far back as 2017 (unbranded) It must have cost me all of £20. It's as generic as it comes haha! ;)

@@ID-Guy That's brilliant! Nice find. Love your content, particularly from a designer's lens. More on the latent cultural layer that sits above the features and specs; the meaning, semiotics, cultural capital, Veblen effect etc.

I'm tired of hearing every watch that has an integrated bracelet (and some that don't even) compared to the RO and Nautilus. No offense but I think Genta gets way too much credit for scribbling on a napkin. Why don't we just call every round watch a homage to a sundial? My question is, at what point does something become a style of its own? I'd say we've reached that point. But calling every damn integrated watch an homage... you can Genta the F outta here with that.
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
There's going to be a time soon (whether in a year or five years) where these models won't have the same appeal that they do at the moment. It's a trend / fashion that all of these manufacturers are following and even thought it's popular to rock them now, something tells me it won't be "everlasting". And good point about the "Genta-fying" - it's a theme that most of us have cottoned onto - it should be a language of its own by now.

Interestingly the Zenith Defy launched 3 years before the AP Royal Oak by Gerald Genta.
@BAF6052 жыл бұрын
There is an element of current fashion going on here though. I was watching a video recently when a dealer revealed that some time ago (ten years I think) he was selling the chunky RO offshore for much more that the RO itself. That situation is now turned completely on its head. It was a timely move for Tissot to reintroduce a "Gentalike" but a future icon of the brand like the Sinn 556 I'm not so sure.
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
I have a sneaking suspicion that much like the fashion of right now is to wear these integrated designs, they will only be a fashion. It looks like 70's designs are definitely having their time at the moment and some notable models look amazing BUT the loads of integrated bracelet machines will eventually lose their edge (especially if they're repeated again and again) Still, it's quite amazing seeing how well received the PRX has been and the beauty is it does have a genuine background linked to the 70's. History will repeat itself ;)
@POSUEN2 жыл бұрын
Fashion and trends have always been cyclical. Fashions come and go and there will definitely be a time where the integrated bracelet look will be pushed aside as a new generation comes to age and they will inevitably push aside the tastes and fashions of their parents in order to make their own statements.

For me, to be a perfect watch PRX should be a solar quartz with a thinner case. Because design wise it is beautiful

I've tried it many times, almost pulled trigger too, all dial and movement variations. But it just doesnt fit me, its really weird on hand maybe i am not used to it, 36 is definitely to small, dial looks squished and 40mm seems just like a plate of metal on my arm. The dial and hands are not terribly intriguing also. It looks differently on arm and when you watch it on video or see it in display. Its probably just me, in theory i love the design. I think only way to really see how it is, is to buy one and wear it for some time. Could grow on me
@scanspeak00 Жыл бұрын
Still feels like a missed opportunity as of Feb 2023. They should release a 38mm model with a large range of dial colours and finishes, slightly larger indices and an applied logo. Also Fix the second hand alignment and ditch the butterfly clasp . I own and enjoy the 35mm quartz in green (6 3/4" wrist)

I find it somewhat amusing that seemingly most integrated watches have their bracelets nicely integrated into the watch, and at the same time the bezel/dial is actually disintegrated from the watch case back/base. Weird stuff. Why are producers integrating the back of the watch case beautifully with the bracelet, and then rounding of the design with a seemingly to small bezel/dial combo???

Are the cases made in Asia, then sent back to Switzerland? A value price as it is, could be the reason for success. Not so heroic is it?
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be surprised if the externals are made in Asia (I think more and more brands are doing this today) As far as I know Hong Kong is one of THE manufacturing capitals for watch cases. All in the efforts of cutting costs I suppose ;)

This makes me wonder if a watch can be great AND new. Are all the great watches today relaunches of classic designs? I’m getting a little tired of explorer, Daytona and genta inspired designs. If truly new and great exists it would be great to have them showcased here. Otherwise, I suppose we’re destined as in movies to watch reboot after reboot of classic movies / stories.

Thank you for this Otto! I put it in the comments as the video went live. I believe (maybe I'm wrong) that the original PRX in the 70's had a rating of 10 meters but the modern machine is rated at 10atm? Don't worry, we're all anal here ;)

X stands for 10 bars not meters. 10 bars = 100 meters of water resistance. 10m is so low and awkward number for watches lol

The Tissot PRX was the reason I sold my Rolex Oysterquartz. When a replica design becomes more popular than the original design of a watch you are wearing it is not a good thing. It's like the Moon Swatch. The cheap replica is getting more hype than it deserves. Just imagine if you owned an original Rolex Explorer and everyone who had never seen one thinks it's a Smith's. I despise the homage approach to watch making. The designers have no fresh ideas. In my opinion, Genta design should stay in the 1970s. Nothing special in the modern era in my opinion. It is all marketing hype!! Why don't people start wearing afros and flared Jeans again if they want to relive the 1970s

Too similar to the oysterquartz... it's easy to have success when copying the design of others...
