I've got 7 Reserved List cards I obtained to play for EDH: (Bayou, Badlands, Taiga, Mox Diamond, Gaea's Cradle, Survival of the Fittest and Metalworker) Consolidated my Modern stuff into these cards and very happy I did. If we are looking at a bear market, I'm probably going to grab a Wheel of Fortune and a LED as well down the road.

So do what the majority aren't doing. I've gone cold on current magic, currently working on building pre-modern decks.

Building an antiquities cube right now. Been investing way more money in older magic. Only new magic I buy is an occasional single and sealed.

You have to divide the Reserved list into two parts. Commander Reserved list cards are in high demand and prices will keep rising.

I wonder if there will eventually be a disconnect where the player base starts to reject cards from lets say pre 2000. It would be interesting to know what the player base is actually accepting, grudgingly accepting or rejecting from the point of old, costly or difficult to get cards. This goes hand in hand with proxies, some would argue that proxies destroy the value of original cards which is hard to argue but on the other hand proxies keeps those cards relevant and accessible. Proxies removes the barrier between the 'haves' and the 'have nots', if proxies didnt exist then eventually the 'have nots' would eventually draw a line and say 'no more'. Player/collector age is also a potential factor, players who were 20s/30s in the 90's are now 50's/60s. They might be more cashed up but is their desire for those cards still high? Are they looking at those cards and thinking how selling them could help their kids buy a house? It will be interesting sector of MTG to watch over the next decade, have we reached peak interest in vintage or is it just a lull?

In a decade no one will remember the 8th variant collector version of Jace with a cowboy hat. No one will remember the Muppets secret lair. Vintage magic is the gold standard. People will still want Underground Sea. Proxies have always existed and had almost no impact on the market.

@@Caliban_80 They might want Underground Sea, but if it is inaccessible due to price/availability to the majority of players will they abandon formats with inaccessible cards? If noone plays/allows those cards then the demand for those cards will wane. Look back to the early 2000's when type 1.5 (extended) and type 2 (standard) were the heavily played formats. The demand of type 1 cards was very low and that was within a decade of those cards being released. Will time keep stretching the line between the 'haves' and the 'have nots' and eventually the majority of players will say "enough, its time for those cards to go away." Proxies are bridging that gap especially when WotC cannot enforce legit cards due to them not running the format in an official capacity like they did back in the 2000's example when any proxy would mean DCI banning.

@@mangoman9290 I think the point you make about the formats is the most likely outcome of a widening gap between "haves and have nots." Formats move around. New formats are created, some formats get abandoned over time. Demand for vintage cards goes in cycles but over time the line goes up regardless. Again, proxies have always been around and had minimal impact on vintage demand. Whether or not WotC sanctions vintage events also seems to have little impact on prices of desirable RL cards. The formats and who plays them might change but the demand for vintage remains. It has continued to increase over the past 30 years despite changing formats and is not likely to decline over the next 30.

I always compare mtg with the comic book market, which already has a longer history. Superman and Batman number 1 are always the goal. Nobody cares about reprints or large print runs of recent years in the long run. Of course an Alpha Lace is no Superman number 1, but playables in ABU, Four Horsemen or in Silver Age are similar.

Just wait for a major S&P 500 breakdown and then go out and get your Grail card. How do you do this? Well just wait for the end of the downtrend like what happened in Oct/Nov 2022 and then see if you can catch a low bid on Ebay with a number you feel comfortable with. This last go around I snagged a Near Mint Regrowth (Unlimited) for $5 shipped.
