Fixed camera angles were not used just because of wanting to scare the player. That is a secondary benefit of fixed camera angles. It was actually done that way because the backgrounds are pre-rendered images with an invisible 3d space layered over them for collision detection, and depth. The hardware of that era could not handle enough polygons on screen to render every detail in real time without a serious downgrade in graphical fidelity, or framerate. That's one reason why those Resident Evil games looked better than any of their competitors during that time. It allowed greater detail in the backgrounds, and higher polygon counts with their character models.

Granted, he _does_ makes a lot of patently false statement about the game that speak to poor research, but I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt here, because the way he says it comes off less as "they could have done full 3d rendering if they wanted to" and more "they chose the particular angles they did in order to enhance the dread"

Actually fixed cameras wasn't used in the later Remakes because it's a lot harder to implement static cameras. It's more easier to do over the shoulder camera. Ultimately it's just laziness on the devs part.

This might've been true when the game was in development back in 1994-1995, but ultimately it spawned a new sub-genre with a very distinct, visually pleasing look and truly unique gameplay style. Not to mention by 1999, PS1 got some truly impressive, fully 3D games, such as Silent Hill and a port of Quake 2. Heck, even Capcom dared to test the polygonal waters by the end of the 20th century with the Dino Crisis. By the 21st century and 6th console gen, any sort of "tech limitations" had all but evaporated, yet numerous studios kept making fixed-camera tank control games. Simply because it was a recognizable, beloved style of the genre.

These games are still alive and well on PC. Originally you could play the less legitimate Sourcenext versions but recently, the trilogy got released legitimately on GOG. The modding scene is still popping off with plenty of mods that overhaul the entire story, a superb randomizer mod, and just this month a door and cutscene skip mod was released for RE2. I still frequently play them.

The reason why the US release of Resident Evil was harder was because of the rental market. They wanted to make sure you had to rent Resident Evil at least 3 times to beat it. People forget the rental market was a battleground for games, same with arcades. Publishers and arcade manufacturers would actually sent pamphlets and videos to rental store owners and arcades telling them how much money they could make off the new and hottest games.

RE1-3 were multiplat games almost day 1. They got many ports, with PC obviously packing the best visuals. RE3 with its 1024x768 backgrounds and HQ FMVs is still the source people use to AI upscale the pre-rendered data. But no, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the original 240p PS1 graphics. They are very charming and pack great art-directing, superb cinematography. And the audio design? Brilliant!

I'll never understand the hatred for tank controls. I bought the original RE the day it launched, and it was, obviously, the first game of that kind I had ever played. I think I struggled with the controls for about a half an hour. After that, it became second nature and I never gave it a second thought. Gamers these days, or should I say, a lot of people under 20-30, simply have zero patience and give up within 5 minutes if something isn't immediately familiar to them. Just can't function unless it's an over-the-shoulder run and gun shooter style mechanic. And in regard to RE1 - If you want to play the original on PS1, play the Director's Cut non-dual shock version. The dual shock version, for whatever reason, changed the original music to a new "remixed" soundtrack, and it's universally regarded as one of the worst soundtracks in any video game. It seriously ruins the game and makes it grating to play.

The remake has spoiled the original game for me. I just can't go back to that one Two and three were a massive step up from the first one and they are different enough from their remakes that I still find the originals worth playing But the remake of the first game literally does everything the original does, but better, and with more content. Note that I am not calling the original a bad game at all. If you want to say it holds up, I would debate that in many ways it doesn't, but it is perfectly playable. It is still designed around its control scheme in a way that works, the level design is still clever and intuitive when you explore enough. Enemy and item placement is still crafted well. I just can't help but feel like there's really no reason to play it outside of curiosity or making an analysis video or something like this.

RE2 on Dreamcast has Nightmare Mode. And RE3 on GameCube is fully uncensored. That's why those are my favorite ports. As for RE1, PS1 Longbox all the way baby!

Not true at all. The 1996 RE1 is a must-play, and easily the best game in the series, if you appreciate more open-ended exploration and more varied scenarios.The REmake downgrades a lot of things with its more restrictive mansion exploration (especially at the beginning), and the way fewer alternative scenarios and endings. The overall difficulty is also much lower, no less thanks to the Defensive Items, plus the controls do feel less tactile, more floaty. Not only that, REmake was made for the veteran RE fans. If you skip the 1996 OG, you will miss a huge chunk of the REmake's biggest appeal: its brilliant mindgames it plays on your own prior memories and expectations of how the game would play out. It changes and expands every little thing, while pretending to be the "same game". And I say this as someone who absolutely adores REmake 1, and considers it as THE blueprint to use for ANY remake.

Jill’s game in RE1 is WAY easier than Chris’s. I’ve played the original RE1 more times than I can count. And I’ve never noticed Chris had more health than Jill. But what is very noticeable is that not only can Jill carry two more items than Chris, she also has the assistance from badass Barry throughout the game. And thanks to his assistance, you can get the shotgun immediately and can completely bypass needing the broken shotgun. Plus, Jill has the ability to get both the shotgun AND grenade launcher, but Chris only gets the shotgun. So yes, Chris and Jill are very much a hard and easy mode.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the devs even confirmed that Chris and Jill were designed as the difficulty options for the game Like, even without the ways Barry's assistance negates a lot of the difficulties that Chris has to deal with on his own, Jill's larger inventory makes the core feature of the games design (inventory management) _much_ easier than playing as Chris.

The original RE trilogy games are the absolute vision of what the series should've remained. Even though I enjoyed RE 4 and to a degree, RE 5, those games just lost the essence of what made the original trilogy and even RE Code Veronica great. I didn't even play RE 7 or 8 because both further bastardized what the original games were. And don't even get me started on these silly ass "remakes" because aside from the 2002 RE 1 remake, the rest suck. Capcom should have used the same stories in RE 2/3 with no changes except better dialogue and graphics in those remakes. RE 4 remake was decent but the dialogue and characters were drastically downgraded. I hope Capcom will eventually return the old school survival horror RE games but I highly doubt that'll ever happen.

Great video love seeing these retrospectives, just a couple of things as someone who's played the crap out of RE2 original, to unlock Tofu you need to clear 6 playthroughs (A, B, A, B, A, B) starting each scenario from the clear save of the last, you only need an A rank on the first 2, for the final 4 you can use special weapons and such also EX mode was only in certain versions of the game, just thought I would point that out in case people wonder why it's not unlocking.

Although I bet they remove it once the remake is released. Capcom has been fine with making collections of their other classics like Megaman, so I don't think they're completely against making a RE collection. Resident Evil 2 on the GameCube did had one useful feature which is skipping the loading doors and cut scenes that is why the GameCube version is my favorite because it can get annoying rewatching the same thing when I want to get to playing the game but I have to wait.

I never played the original RE1. I started with RE2 on PC when I was a kid. It was the scariest thing ever. Many years later I got RE4 on the GameCube and I loved it so much that I bought the other RE games for the GameCube, too. RE0 is great and often overlooked when the series is being discussed. I liked playing through the RE1 remake, but RE2 is still my favourite. I actually never finished RE3. It's a shame we never got Code Veronica for the GameCube. Wait a minute. I just checked. Wikipedia says that it was released for GameCube. But I don't remember ever seeing it for sale here in Germany/Austria 😢😢😢

Three corrections 15:59 that's not William, it's a G adult, it's the embryo that burst out of either Ben or Chief Irons depending on who's A scenario you play 20:10 the Dreamcast and PC versions are the only one's to have hard mode 24:30 mashing buttons in 1 and 2 does get zombies off you faster. During the G1 fight of Birkin, if you get hit with his pipe and fall down, you have to mash buttons quickly or else he'll instant kill you

A lot of information was skewered in this video. The Gamecube version of Resident Evil 2 plays exactly like the Duelshock but has better graphics and resolution with a new arrange mode. The Extreme battle as far as I know is only on the Dreamcast. The dreamcast version was the best version at the time but now we have GOG version that is probably the best for modern day standards (Not mentioning mods).

Re3 being labelled as a side project and CV being the ‘real’ re3 is just a myth btw. Capcom WERE working on a side game at the same time involving Hunk on a cruise ship, but scrapped it. Nemesis and CV were made simultaneously. CV specifically for Dreamcast, and RE3 for PlayStation. Nemesis makes more sense as RE3 because it closes the ‘Racoon City’ chapter of Resident Evil while Code Veronica- Is side-story af.

Not going into remakes, but the original RE is so BA for its time. I remember first playing in 1996 and being blown away. I did not know about the game, I just found it in a stack of PSX games that my roommate had borrowed. (we were in college). And I was hooked ever since. I have so many great memories of playing the first 3 in college. Then showing 4 to my daughter when she was a little girl. (and all of the games that came before 4)

As a preteen/teen, i got bored of these games very quickly. As an adult, I now appreciate the pace. I can take my time and really learn the maps, making them feel more realistic. And of course, as I get older I grow tired of the open world games. Mostly linear games like RE4 and its clones are still fun though.

@ I can’t call RE1 2002 a “remake”, more like a reimagining if you will and I’ve played that and directors cut about 100 times in my life lmao 2,3,4 are completely reworked games from the ground up intended to be generational remakes. The only other game I can see that again with is a Code Veronica Remake which is very much needed rn, unless they decide to remake 1 with over the shoulder perspective like the other’s

Remaster : take the existing thing and upgrade the graphics and sound, and maybe add few control things but no real change in the overall game. Remake : restart the game from nothing. Totally new graphics, new sounds, new gameplay systems, eventually new places or monsters. Reboot : just take the main idea but make something totally new and different. Reimagined : it’s not a technical term. So yes, RE2002 is a remake of the 1996 game. And the PS3 version is a remaster of the remake.

Actually the water puzzle is one of the most hard of the original trilogy, if you re trying to beat it in less than 3 hours you have to face at least 4 outcomes, 2 are easy, 1 is medium and the other is pretty time consuming to solve, like the yolo Carlos section on the hospital room, that darn cabinet puzzle!. Nemesis is my favorite RE game and i think i beated at least 50 times by now, and played mercenaries until my CD melted when i was a child haha, its one my favorites childhood memories, playing RE3 alone...

24:26 you literally could smash your way out of enemy grabs in RE1 and 2, since day 1. Did you not read the game manuals?? They LITERALLY spell it out for ya: spam ALL buttons to escape enemy grabs and to get up if you fall down. You can legit avoid damage this way, and especially in RE2 your struggles are even animated.
