I know people before were talking about how the juxtaposition of the aged frame with the restored painting made it feel like a window into the past. But oh my god, this is beautiful. For me the gold and contrasted with the cool tones of the painting really gives it a window feeling. Like you're inside a warm, luxurious store front looking out at a cold winter's day. I think it really adds to the impact of the painting. Excellent work. I also completely didn't realize before cleaning that the frame was supposed to be all gold. I thought it was mostly white/pale paint with gold filigree or something on the raised carvings. What causes that kind of thick and solid grime? EDIT: I didn't realize there was a narrated version. Checking it out now, and it seems some of my questions are answered already.

It's called aging the gilt or something, my mother did gold leaf and gilt work for Collins (dictionaries, encyclopedias etc) and it's weirdly quite destructive work, however the strength of gold leaf once applied is phenomenal, you can see he used different tapes to give different aged effects etc. My mum told me once that after every shift they were searched because pure 18/24ct gold leaf back in the day was expensive so not a crumb was wasted. They spent at least half an hour scouring the tables with a brush to gather up even gold leaf dust.

Framing is a craft. I ran an Aaron Brothers for 3 years. Such a soothing experience to design and be around art like that daily.
