A new thing retailers are doing if you’re connected to their WiFi, because you unknowingly agreed to the terms when connecting, they tap into your Spotify, Apple Music or whatever and will play songs off that playlist or adjacent artists. So if you hear a song that you thought only you knew or felt like it was a little too underground to hear at a store that’s why. When I start hearing a lot of Natalie Cole or Nao, I look up at work and oh wow a lot of woc are shopping now. It’s so creepy but it’s real!

Shout out to retail employees, current and former. For better or worse, at the college bookstore I worked at, only two compilation CDs were ever played. Thank you for acknowledging the realities of musicians here although I do also think some of the work some musicians put into music used by retail can lead to media illiteracy…my partner has heard Sara Bareilles’ “Love Song” so often they thought it would make for a good wedding song…and I was like,no it is a good marriage counseling song.

I feel almost grateful I worked in a Vans because while they wanted to keep people in the store for longer, their music catered to a more alternative crowd while still remaining pop-y? If that makes sense. A LOT of Steve Lacey, Tame Impala, Kali Uchis, Anderson .Paak, etc etc. Even if I didn't like the music playing in the store, I could at least count on not really hearing them in other stores to the point where the songs get solidified as Retail Music ^TM yknow?

Funny you mentioned soap actors, I was discussing this a few days ago, saying that they kinda have the best of both worlds : they make a very decent living off of their passion, have a rather stable job by the industry's standards, they can enjoy the fancy side of celebrity but they're not famous to the point of losing all privacy... maybe in general the best deal for all kinds of artists is to remain a "B list" celebrity, you collect your checks, go to some glamorous events and the rest of the time you can chill !

I actually had a theory that there was some sort of industry plant push because I am a hater and went to dislike a yt vid of a song that always played but it barely had views or subscribers so I was confused as to why we were playing that and not the usual emo hits

Thats so weird, as a pretty casual HT customer, my store has strictly played at least emo hits, emo adjacent, or at least the most "pop" band Cobra Starship. Like I get bands who are emo adjacent like Ice Nine Kills or even Black Veil Brides or Palaye Royale being played and Waterparks who evolved to fit what Awsten wanted to produce and put out but straight pop??? insane.

my job plays a LOT of taylor swift because she has exclusive deals with target. it has been a nightmare. i cannot escape her, i have to know things about her & her music against my will & listen to her when i do not want to, i genuinely feel anger at being held hostage like this. she's a horrible, shallow, artistically barren person & i have to be surrounded by her while i'm trying to collect my pitiful check! like what you do you mean she's released (as of this comment) THIRTY SEVEN different versions of an album she dropped 2 months ago??? 37??? that she specifically dropped 3 in just the uk the day after charli xcx released her highly anticipated album??? i'm so sick of her. they also still play drake's garbage too! i've been a hater because i've kept up with the allegations all these years. he is also creatively barren & i am reveling in his downfall, especially by a true capital A Artist like kendrick lamar. i find it funny they'll play drake but when they play american boy, it's only estelle's part lol like, why draw the line at kanye but not drake? i miss working at this other target that didn't play music. not only because of previous reasons, but also because i also have auditory processing issues because of ADHD. it's hard for me to understand people, especially places like the fitting room where it's super loud but customers are still yapping at me, which customers being rude & condescending already won't be understanding about me not hearing them at all or struggling to understand them. ableism happens really fast because customers that interact with employees are broadly very entitled to whatever they think my role is in meeting their bizarre demands when really they have no perspective on how my job works or what they should expect as a customer. music is just overstimulating just as a baseline on top of everything we have to deal with. i have less coworker than i did 5 years ago & now i have to carry the responsibility of 3 or 4 other people but i'm getting paid not even enough to survive as just 1 person. and i have to listen to taylor swift back to back?!?!

i will say my store plays the man by the killers sometimes, as well as of course their hit mr. brightside & i don't mind those as much because i like the killers (saw them in concert a few years ago to fulfill a childhood dream with my sister & it was amazing!) but i don't go out of my way to listen to them as much, so it's a fun nostalgic surprise. i struggle with nostalgia because of consistent ongoing trauma throughout my life (so far... i'm still holding out for hope in the future i'll be safe someday) so when i hear or see things from the past it brings up a lot of intense emotions that's common with c-ptsd. i'm grateful for these songs i can still feel the same joy i did when i first heard them as a kid despite everything that was happening. sorry for all the rambling. can't afford therapist so youtube comments it is lol

Christmas season was the worst- same songs every 30 minutes. Recently they just added more newly released songs to the mix, like Beyonce's "Texas Hold Em" in Walmart 😂. I find that if it's an old song I like, it makes me happier, but doesn't affect my shopping. Songs I hate (most of the new ones and them sampling old ones lol) or overplayed makes me want to get out of there. The best is a mid tempo instrumental, I think. Made me shop more. But stores want the new recent ones, and it's actually easy to write a song that's good for shopping or coffee shops and add a couple of words for the general public.
